We Are Better 8/1 - Malick Meiga

iu

Listed at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, Meiga is from Montreal, Canada.

Meiga then attended another camp at The Opening, this time in Washington, D.C., on May 5. He ran even faster in the 40 (4.42 seconds) and the shuttle (4.19 seconds). Those results grabbed not only Penn State's attention, who offered just five days later, but also Louisville, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia Tech, as all five schools offered within a week.

He's a raw prospect with great measureables. Laser timed 4.42 at the Opening. Best offers were Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia. Have to keep adding speed to the roster and he has time to develop with the WR depth chart.
Like it.
  • A late bloomer (let's see if this late bloomer turns out better than the early blooming flower of Catawissa)
  • As noted, the size and speed look good
  • Unlike the Florida prospects, he won't be scared away by a little cold weather

Nice to have those 6'4" WR'S as targets going up against 5'9" CB's.

As mentioned above, hope the Canada connection helps with Theo Johnson.

Louisville, Syracuse and West Virginia were among other Power Five squads involved for Meiga, who has laser-timed 40-yard dash of 4.42 seconds, a shuttle of 4.08 seconds and a 35.8-inch vertical leap.
He caught 29 passes for 682 yards (23.5 per catch) and seven touchdowns in 2018.

The Nittany Lions locker room currently includes three players who began their high school playing careers in Canada, each out of Ontario: linebacker Jesse Luketa, defensive end Daniel Joseph and safety Jonathan Sutherland.

seems we recruit a lot of top tier athletes who have little football experience. That seems to be panning out. At 6-3 with that speed, if he learns the game, can be a real weapon.

I think its a trend with some of the top programs who can afford to offer schollies to freak athletes and give them further time to develop. PSU has done a great job with this the past several years.

It might reflect the maturing of Franklin's program. PSU has enough depth at a lot of positions, it can afford to spend some scholarships now on players who might not be ready for a couple of years.

Provided the 2018 and 2019 receiver classes pan out, PSU can take a chance on less skilled players with an extremely high ceiling. Meiga might be kind of like a Jason Oweh kind of athlete. 6-5 running a 4.4, if he can develop ball and route skills, there's no way to cover that with a single corner. That size/speed demands a double team.

In post #5 of this thread, he was 6'5" and 220#. Kid grows fast.

So in yesterday's "We Are Better" thread, psuro marveled about how Elksnis apparently grew in weight and stature so quickly...

Now, in response, you have Meiga SHRINKING an inch from post 7 in THIS thread and shrinking 2 inches from post 2 in this thread? ;)

Conservation of inches. If one grows, someone has to shrink.

What's the other big thing that is different in 2019.....

The transfer portal. Before it was processing. When was the last time you heard someone accuse someone of that? With the Portal it is now on the kids to enter and find a place to play if it isn't working out at their first school. I am not advocating pushing kids to do that, but the reality is they are going to do it themselves. Especially if coach X at school Y is messaging them or their entourage that at school Y it would be different. You know that tampering is happening.

I blame the metric system.

I'm guessing that gravity is stronger in State College than in Montreal.

First post he was measured by a man, second by a woman.....
