We don’t need no stinking chain

Of all our regulars, I see CropDuster as being able to pull off a pimp cane on the mat. The man handles himself with aplomb in hostile places like the Guillotine, so he’d be confident enough to pull off the cane and the strut
I could see Guns with a cane on the mat.

My high school did this back in the day. Oversized pin for the "fastest fall" and regular size pin for any fall. The coach would huddle everybody up after each dual and hand them out one at a time with the fastest fall given out last. Everybody wanted the big pin so we were like vultures on the mat when facing a weak opponent. Sometimes I shot before the ref even blew the whistle LOL.

Worked in HS. In college there were much more mature motivators that we cared about but I don't see anything wrong with the tOSU pin chain if it works for them. Just not our style.

Per Flo:

In the post-match presser, Snyder explained the origins of the Pin Chain:
"It's from Miami. The Turnover Chain. Obviously, people in the wrestling world know that Penn State is really good, and we are really good. And it's going to come down to who can get the most bonus points. I wouldn't have worked hard for a pin unless there was a Pin Chain. So we are going to bump up our bonus points this year, and every time we get a pin we are going to put the Pin Chain on."

I don't know why but these comments from Snyder really bothered me. Here's one of the leaders of your team and possibly the best wrestler in America explaining that he needs a stupid gimmick to motivate himself to score more points. Contrast that with Bo commenting after defeating Gabe Dean that he should have worked harder to get bonus despite the outcome of the team race long decided. Scoring the absolute most points you can every time you step on the mat has clearly been ingrained in the culture of our program.

Lots of NHL teams give away a game hat (or some other item) to whichever player earned it that game, and they might say something afterward like "it means a lot to be awarded the hat by my teammates..." The hat isn't the motivation, it's just a gimmicky device representing motivation. Likewise, I'm not taking Snyder literally here. He even says outright that the team needs bonus points to beat Penn State; that's the motivation.

I hope so. I like Snyder and I want to believe that he doesn't need something as stupid as the "Pin Chain" to make him work towards 6 points. Obviously tone is lost in the written word. Its possible that this statement was supposed to be completely tongue in cheek.

they need to do something like the LL world series kids end up with... some type of good luck charm... often a stuff animal of sorts..

Just me, but I believe Snyder is simply taking the role of leader and if he openly buys into the concept it is easier for the other others guys to buy in.

On Long Island in the 80s (and I imagine elsewhere but I can only speak to what I saw), certain schools' wrestlers would wear these oversized, almost novelty-sized, safety pins on their warm-up jackets for each pin they got. Sort of like Japanese flags on WW2 fighter planes for each kill. I liked the idea but my coach didn't.
About a decade ago Kid's clubs in Illinois used to do the same thing but put the pins on their skull caps and beanies.

From a motivational theory standpoint, this is a comparison and contrast between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation.Obviously Cael and his coaches subscribe to the theory that for any individual to reach their full potential (as a wrestler, or more importantly as a person) they must strive to become the best version of what they can become, and that the ultimate reward for this is simply the fulfillment and satisfaction (dare I say the f word?) that comes from this process. On the other hand, if we rely on extrinsic rewards (e.g. pin chains) to motivate us to become the best we can be, over time, the power of that reward diminishes. I have a difficult time believing that someone who has achieved as much success as Kyle Snyder has to rely on a pin chain to motivate him to perform at his best. However, it is an interesting contrast to the coaching philosophy of style over substance. Apparently, Tan Tom believes his wrestlers need an extra motivational boost to compete with Penn State. In the meantime, Cael and company are operating on a much higher plane of self-actualization. Ultimately, intrinsic motivation wins over extrinsic motivation over the long term. I predict that this will be true in March. ;)

It's easy...

Internal team completion is motivating.

Pin chain, not so much.

Rumor has it......that prior to settling on the pin chain for internal team motivation, match participation trophies were debated.

It was later decided that this might not be motivation enough across the entire season.

Do you get one if you shut down for the rest of the match after being taken down?

Dang-you guys spent a lot of time on this. Ate lunch with a few other fans today. When brought up, the answers were;
1. Whatever they think-
2. Who cares what they do-
3. What is a pin chain-

And the conversation quickly changed to next years recruiting. Ya'll gave it much more time that it was worth! Don't ya go to work at least sometimes? ;)

I initiated the thread, provided some likes to some of the replies, and wrote a follow-up response. I probably spent 15 minutes on it and enjoyed reading the responses. Just a harmless diversion and you’re right, much ado about nothing. I’m sure I could have put that time to better use but I found the concept of a pin chain to be thread worthy. I enjoy your posts Cowboy and appreciate the feedback from you and your lunch bunch.

I'm not 100% convinced this is a Ryan creation. I could see a scenario where the Athletic Department wants to roll a PR machine to the max while it has an Olympic champion representing the school and team, and came up with this gimmick because "it looked cool in football". Maybe I'm being creative, as Roar politely put it, but it would not surprise me in the least if the Ryan tweet and Snyder commments were done TIC. They may have been put up to the pin chain and figured they might as well have some fun with it.

Sort of like the "halftime" concept we all trashed when it was first introduced.

I like the pin chain. It’s fun. A pin shows the ultimate domination and if people want to enjoy it with a symbol, dance whatever I’m all for it. Mark Hall did the Sawuan Barkley Friday night

Pins are somethings that help on the way to an NCAA championship. Similarly, strength (deadlift) is something that helps on the way. A B1G title is something on the way. There’s nothing wrong with tracking stats internally, but if you tweet about it outside your team, it just invites ridicule. The tweeting would be just like bragging about B1G dual-meet records or deadlift prowess. Once you tweet to the world, it just seems like bragging about the wrong thing. It just seems like a middle-school thing to do.

Is it good to let a guy make you defend yourself like that for doing nothing wrong? Would a Clint Eastwood character be played that way? ;)

OMG.

This thread is positively hilarious!! And the pic of The Zain Chain is missing several large charms including the Hodge and another NC.

Pillows on the mat. Lol.

Edit: actually maybe a perfectly executed bow and arrow earns you the Zain Chain. Had a medal with Zain’s face and it plays Ring of Fire

Funny that. I was just imagining Dad Nelson taking it away from you and breaking it over your head.

Unlikely. If he's anything like Son Nelson he's more likely to take him to the ground and then lay motionless on top of him for 3 minutes.

Oy vey...the chain isn't even gold...WTF?
As the nuns used to sing in kindergarten:

"... Make new pimps [Crop]
But keep the old [Banger]
One is silver
And the other's gold ..."

All I really need to know I learned in pimp kindergarten. :)
