I caught an interview this morning with Michael Lombardi. He’s a former GM in NFL and the show is heavy on analytics. A couple mentions that I found interesting. He said with football the way it is played and officiated today the best way to be a premier defense is to play less defense. He referenced the Ravens who control the clock but still have a big play, high scoring offense. It’s a switch for the Ravens who were historically D first. I think he stated they convert a high % third downs and use the clock wisely. He also quoted the great John Wooden who said play fast but don’t hurry.
He also spoke about culture and why the Browns and other teams struggle and the Pats don’t. He also stated that Miami though having poor players is starting to develop a culture and had played some close games before winning. Culture was huge for him and it made me think of PSU and how we survived and prospered under the sanctions and afterward. Joe left a culture and Obie and JF didn’t change it and really honored and embraced it. He intimated that the HC sets the culture, that is key and you can hire the best coordinators and assistants to round out.
interesting listen if anyone wants to find it online.
