What about Hall?

I believe he will grey shirt first as he has Olympic aspirations and then possibly redshirt at PSU. At least that's what he reported in an interview and he also said that Cael was in full support of it.

I think he redshirts next year, and maybe takes an Olympic shirt in 2019. It makes no sense, in my opinion, for him to take the Olympic shirt this coming season when the Olympics would already been over....

2017 would not be an Olympic shirt, it would be a grayshirt (deferred enrollment).

2019 Olympic shirt makes no sense if it's even allowable. Olympics would be in 2020. Why take the year before to specialize in freestyle, then use the actual Olympic year to un-specialize?

I talked to my buddy at AV about this very subject and he said from what he understands Hall will greyshirt unless Cael tells him differently before June. This isn't inside information just a family of Mark Hall friends/fans. Hall is a real team first type of kid, so I'm not surprised that he will let Cael tell him.

When I said 2019, I was referring to the 2019-2020 academic/wrestling year. That would make perfect sense as a lead-up to the Olympics.

Why wouldn't he just redshirt in 2016-17 instead of grayshirting? I wonder if schollie money is an issue?

Isn't it possible he can Grey Shirt for this Olympics. Red Shirt the year after. And also Olympic Red Shirt for 2019/2020. They are all mutually exclusive things.

Am I being greedy by wanting him to just start winning titles like Next Year for Psu? He's more than ready, ask J-Nolf

Fans from other schools I talked to last weekend at NCAA's were so surprised when they brought up Mark Hall and I told them he would probably redshirt.

Because he could spend the grayshirt year training freestyle and traveling to the USOTC and various international competitions. Then spend the redshirt year training folk, going to various Opens, the Scuffle or Midlands, etc.

If he grayshirts, I also believe it will be because we have a log jam. With Nolf, Cenzo, Nickal, Rasheed/Cutch from 157 to 184 the plan may be for Hall to grayshirt and then redshirt. Cutch will have graduated and Nickal and Rasheed will have had a couple of years to prepare to bump up to make 174 available. Of course only Cael knows the plan ;-)

LMAO, Mark Hall is not going to be affected by a "log jam". If Cael gives the go ahead, we make room for him.

See: 141, Jimmy Gulibon, and 133: Jordan Conaway.

Don't rule it out: Right now it's basically a matter of inches from Penn State to Ohio State or even Iowa and Va Tech and the pokes. If Ohio State isn't shirting White, and Iowa isn't shirting Marinelli, it might come down to what we decide to do at 165. I'm not saying we can't have the advantage there, but there have been matches between Cenzo and White, and it didn't work out so well for us, albeit freestyle....

Geno is improving at light speed and Cenzo could very well beat White and Marinelli, but the whole weight class will be open, and I don't think anyone in the nation doubts what would happen if Cael pulls the shirt and Mark goes.

So if he gray shirts so that he can be at the OTC for a year, what would be the point of a red shirt the following year at PSU?

This.

Cutch's feelings are not worth protecting if it means waiting more than one year without Hall in the lineup. At some point you risk losing him to an international career, and yet people want to delay his eligibility? A 22 year old freshman? No thank you. He just may call his college career quits when training for the Olympics in 2019. He already talks about how much he loves freestyle.

Cael did not go to Apple Valley and sign Mark, to have him wrestle everywhere ELSE in the world for 3 years and then pop on in to State College for a year. Sorry, in my view he wrestles soon, if not 2016, then for certain in 2017.

Agreed. And I'd hate for Bo to go to 184 until it clears out in 17-18, but I know that it's the least of Bo and Cael's worries. They'd do it in a second if they thought it was the right move to have Joseph/Hall/Nickal as soon as next year

Yes, I also don't think Mark wants to be a 25 year old dude walking around campus working out with kids

Might clear out THIS year. Other than Gabe Dean...that is. 97, other than that freak Cox, is wide open.

This forgets that Hall hired Cael to be both his college coach and his Olympic coach. They will devise a plan that makes sense for both goals. None of us knows yet what that will be.

Matt Brown's path says we can't just dismiss the possibility of Hall first starting in 2019.

Both of these positions make sense to me, with a good case for various delays to the beginning of his college competition but also a good case for starting within a year after high school graduation. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

And that's my only point. Not implying at ALL that Mark Hall cares about or is worried about a log jam. But Cael has to be even just to make sure he doesn't have lots of scholarship money sitting on the bench that he can't use for other recruits. I have no clue what the "plan" is but am sure that Cael and Mark are on the same page and it will be executed as agreed to. To me it makes sense for Hall to not be in the lineup this coming year. After that, I don't know what Cael's master plan is.

Also believe, like most log jams, that it will work itself out. Somebody isn't going to be happy eventually and that somebody is likely to leave PSU.

Just an opinion.
The two OSUs will again be PSU's closest pursuers. Vincenzo Will Be THE 165 Pound alpha, unless Martinez bumps a weight.

Iowa fans are foolish in believing Marinelli is going to step in and be the difference. The kid needs a redshirt. Next season Iowa is again wrestling for 4th place and probably finishing behind VaTech again.

From a fan's point of view I would rather see Bo at 174 again next year with Hall stepping in two years down the road.

The kid who if possible should greyshirt and then redshirt is Manville.

Of course, the bottom line is it will work itself out.

will he be redshirted?

All the speculation here whether he will greyshirt, redshirt or both aside, Hall said himself when he committed to PSU that after the Olympic Trials he and Cael would sit down and decide what to do, which means to me no decision has been made yet. We can argue among ourselves the pros and cons, but in the end I don't think they will take our opinions into account. Just saying. :D

Cenzo as the alpha is a bit of a stretch. I'd project him as a mid-AA right now

I believe Cael's "plan" is to follow El-Jefe world domination plan.:D

Cenzo as THE alpha is a huge stretch. Ike is a JR. BoJo is a SO, no guarantee he goes up yet. That's just in conference.

Lewis is a FR. Rohskopf is a JR. Etc. Plus Chandler Rogers likely drops from 174.

BoJo going up is a darn near certainty, and I think Cenzo will be a good deal better than Rohskopf who really has nothing from neutral. But Ike, Rogers, Lewis and Massa will all cause some problems for him. Plus wherever Chance ends up

Marstellar will end up right where he was last year: Smith has shown throughout his career he cares about nothing but winning. Klimara got busted with a bag of cocaine and he was right back on the mat the next year. Pencil Chance in at 165 for Oklahoma State.

Not sure if the tan man will send him up to 174 or not...but if I had to bet, I would think that he'll stay at 165 next year.

I expect Ryan to go all in next year. That means no tanshirt for White at 165. Pletcher will get every chance to win 133 if Tomasello somehow stays 125. BoJo and Myles both move up.

He has to be looking at this year -- returning 83 pts, most in the country -- and thinking what if he got anything at all out of 149, 184, and 197.

Exactly what I thought. To the T.

Except he has to convince his 41 pounder to move up, and that's going to be a hard sell, haha.
