What is he gonna do about 79?

At this point you cannot put him on the field at Right tackle. They were out there running past him last night like he was a high schooler. Any possible solutions? I sincerely hope they don't ride him like they rode 73 at center last year..I hope at least they fix the leak.

Options seem to be:

1. Replacing Wallace with Effner as was done in the 2nd half last night - anyone know how many series or what part of the 2nd half Effner played?

2. Moving Tengwell to right OT where he was solid in the game last season when a good many of the OL players were out sick. I believe he played right OT in that game - anyone remember? Wormley and Nourzad would then start at Guard and Wallace could practice at Guard as a backup along with the younger inside olinemen and/or back up the OT's.

3. Or maybe Trautwein has enough confidence in the true freshman Drew Shelton to move him from backing up Fashanu on the left side, over to compete to start at right OT. Shelton was a top recruit and reportedly is coming along pretty fast. And if he could play better than Wallace would be a longer term solution, who could always move back over to the left side later in his PSU career after Fashanu is gone. It seems that Effner has played all over the OL and could then back up Fashanu as well.

Obviously moving the least amount of olinemen would be the least disruptive but with Ohio coming to town now is the time to make a significant move to improve the OL.

In Franklin's post game press conference he said that they had planned to substitute on the OL, but that Wallace "has some things he needs to work on"..... But if he has been working on those "things" for the last 3.5 years while at PSU, what are the odds that he can correct those "things" during the next week?? Time has come for a change in personnel.....

I think it needs to be done sooner rather than later. At least Effner in there next week and try that first...

GIP nicely broken down.

Wallace should be playing Right Guard not Right Tackle. Tangwell looked good at Right Tackle last year vs Rutgers. Let's hope Wallace gets better at playing Tackle.

Does he have incriminating pictures of the coaching staff? Why the insistence on having Wallace on the field? Effner came in for the game winning drive and that decision wasn't an accident. Put Effner in at Right tackle and go about your business. There's nothing about Wallace's play that should prove he deserves any playing time at all, any position.

On3.com has a stat after games that shows the number of snaps each player had and what their grade was. saw effner at rt in the first quarter as an extra tackle. also saw him on the left side, but don't know what position. he logged 18 plays and was the highest rated ol with a score of 76. 76 out of what, i have no idea.

Exactly. You don't get in a twist because he isn't 300 pounds. You go by the results on the field. Penn State actually would have an average offensive line if it were not for that hole at Right Tackle. If Effner can simply be effective enough to prevent speed rush sacks, it's probably our best o line since 2016.

77 Wormley was horrible. Maybe partly because of 79's ineffectiveness. Looked like the best running lanes were behind Tengwell. Not sure what Trautwein will do but if anything but changed need to be made.

OSU's 79 right tackle looked even worse on speed rush. He was also confused in blitz pickup and had a number of false starts against ND. Manny needs to attack there.

Agree that Tengwall looked much better than Wallace on his best day, and his best days have been hard to notice the past couple of years.

Where I used to work it would be employment suicide to use the word "hope" when explaining a path forward to solve a problem. But Franklin saying in his post game press conf. that "Caedan has some things he needs to work on" sounded more like "hope" than a rational plan to improve the OL performance. Wallace is a Redshirt Junior, so he has been working on his deficiencies for the better part of 3.5 years and expecting him to solve those problems in the next week when he hasn't done so in 3+ years is more like a "hope" than it is a business plan. It's past time for Wallace to be replaced at Right OT and anything less than his replacement is a disservice to the team and it's fans.

Which is why Franklin and Trautwein need to make a change today or tomorrow and implement one of the 3 options I previously listed.
Wallace to bench as a backup OT while working to learn to play Guard, giving the Right OT starting job to one of:
a)Tangwell with Nourzad taking over Left Guard, or
b) Effner, or
c) Drew Shelton, the true freshman that at this point is a little light, but reportedly very athletic.

Personally, if Shelton is showing promise I'd like to see him in the lineup. Play a young, talented player and let him learn and get better each game. We have seen that Wallace is not getting better after 20 games.......

One thing about Joe. He hated to lose. And when his team didn't play well due to the poor performance of 1 or a couple of players he would make changes. Franklin needs to adopt that philosophy.

Don’t worry about O$U, we are no where near them. Just keep it within 4 TDs.

77 wasn't even in the same area code as 79. Totally lost as to which game you were watching. The line is fine. 79 needs to go and that's all that needs done. Greg outlined 3 ways to do it and there might even be a 4th or 5th way but 79 needs to be on the bench.

Thomas Frank Carr on BWI did a post game film review focusing on the OL players and said that Wormley did a great job, which is why he was not taken out within the planned three Guard rotation, and why only Tengwall and Nourzad shared playing time. I can't say I saw enough or focused enough to argue one way or the other.
