What We Think We Know, What We Don't Know

In less than a week, Cael will probably reveal the starters for this 2015/2016 wrestling season. I don't post often, but I do make multiple visits, on a daily basis, to this board to find out what is going on regarding the wrestling team. So I thought I would take a moment and synopsize what I think I have learned regarding each weight class based on what I have read on various threads on this message board. Here goes:

125 - Nico - period.

133 - Jordan - probably. Whoever does not start between JG and Dunmore at 141 may decide to take a shot at 133.

141 - JG or Dunmore. Initially heard that Dunmore had beaten JG; have just read that JG may have beaten Dunmore in OT. So we probably won't know anything until Cael tells us something.

149 - Zain - period.

157 - Nolf - looks like he just won over Zack; no surprise here.

165 - The big black hole in the lineup. Have read nothing to indicate who has the edge or who is even wrestling at this weight (although you have to assume at a minimum it is Hammond and Rasheed). So even though we have gotten lots of rumored results from the wrestling room on many weight classes of interest to us all, the rumors on 165 have been non existent.

174 - Bo - probably given that initial info was that Brill had pinned him once followed by info that Bo had won decisively on two follow-up matches. Would be very surprised if it is not Bo.

184 - McCutcheon - probably unless Bo doesn't start at 174 and decides to try for 184. Don't think this is very likely.

197 - McIntosh - period.

HWT - Johnson - period given the injury to Nick.

Just my thoughts - am looking forward to attending the Nittany Lion Open and the BJC match against Wisconsin.

Should be a great year for the Lions.

Thanks for the synopsis. Dinmore wrestled nearly half his matches during his senior year of high school at 160. I imagine 141 is a tough cut for him and doubt he has any shot at making 133. And I agree that 165 has been an information black hole, but it's not a talent black hole.

Oh to be a fly on the wall in that room...I'm sure there's some intense competition happening. Like everyone else I'm super curious to know how 165 is playing out. I'd also be curious to know about Phipps and if he's pushing Cutch at all at 84. There's so much talent and depth in that room right now, truly impressive.

Interesting about Dinmore. 141 might be one of those weights that go to the scuffle before the starter is determined.

little or no depth at 197 and heavyweight

Something else that I just posted, combined with this thread got me thinking. So along the lines of the title of this thread, I'm going to post some predictions/observations about PSU wrestling. These are JMO, based on all kinds of stuff - talking to guys I know, message board posts here and elsewhere, gut feelings by me based on watching PSU, college and HS wrestling for a while, etc. Most of them are probably just complete guesses even if they are based on the above stuff, since half of what you hear and read is always colored (bias) and the other half has been distorted by "whisper down the lane."

1) The first one is not even a prediction, lol. But I won't be shocked if Mark Hall picks PSU - or if he picks Minnesota or ASU. I will be somewhat shocked if he picks anywhere else. Except if the FLO theory (that says that all this is disinformation because he WANTS to shock the world on FLO) turns out to be true, then I predict he will pick tOSU.

2) Shakur will win the 165 spot. And the obvious caveat is weight management.

3) Nevills is most likely out for the season, but there's a small percentage chance that he's not and that decision will be made much later than now depending on multiple factors (Nevills himself, how team is looking, how Jan Johnson develops) - this one is just completely a guess on my part.

4) Spencer Lee will end up at Iowa and El Jefe's plan for world domination will undergo another small change - but it won't derail the plan for world domination.

5) Bo Nickal at 174 is in no danger despite the pin in the early "wrestle off." Obvious caveat injuries.

6) Gary Dinmore may challenge for a starting spot, but it won't happen this year because he will RS. Obvious caveat injuries.

This is not meant to be an "insider" post - it isn't. Just guesses on my part. Be curious to see some of the other frequent posters here guesses. And not the "PSU will have 10 NC or AAs, PSU will win the next 10 team championships" kind of thing.

I figured someone would bring that up...that topic has been beat to death. We just graduated 3 senior heavies and had an injury in the upper weights. Beyer is coming in next year at heavy and we'll have Stout and Vassar at 97

I received the PSWC newsletter yesterday in the mail. It has the profiles of each wrestler. On Rasheed's, it says "We'll get to see him compete when he shakes off an injury." Even though the information in the newsletter is probably several weeks old, I would take that as he's not 100%. So, he might not even be in the current mix.

Well, there you go. Could start out 0 for 1 on my fearless predictions.

Thanks Gray. I talked with the editor, and this was a reference to last year's injury(s), and his lack of mat time. From my sources, Corey is good to go.
