What year do you remember the 'We Are…' chant first used en masse at games?

I've seen the old GOPSF clip w/ Wally Triplett, but saw a post on another board saying we ripped it off from Marshall. Just curious.

The Penn State cheerleaders that started it credit their inspiration to Ohio State, USC & Kentucky.

They first tried to get the chant going in 1976 and that it didn't really catch on until '81 or '82.

I'm pretty sure it was a thing at the '78 Texas A&M game, at the outset of the game, and the '79 Miami game. I relate it to the JoePa - Terno cheer. They seem to have the same origin time in my (perhaps addled) memory.

The name of the movie about the Marshall Team involved in the plane crash that killed the majority of the team was "We Are Marshall", but Marshall never conducted any cheer remotely similar to the PSU whole stadium cheer similar to "JoePa......terno" or "We Are.....Penn State!" where half of the stadium chants the first part of the cheer and the other half of the stadium responds with the second half of the cheer. Marshall never conducted any such cheer let alone PSU "ripping it off from them".

...and I've never seen any credible source claiming that either. for example: Sportscaster reflects on "We are ... Marshall" chant, which states that the cheer disn't start at Marshall until the mid ,80s and didn't take off until 1991.

Was definitely earlier than 1981 or 1982. I attended PSU from 1981-1985. My Dad attended PSU in the early to mid 1960s (Graduate School). I had three older siblings that attended PSU from the early 1970s such that my parents had at least one child on PSU's campus from 1972 through 1985, so I started attending PSU games on a regular basis in the early 1970s (my dad would take us to 2 or 3 games a year to watch a game and visit my siblings on campus. I remember the cheer taking place well before I attended PSU myself, but I couldn't put an exact date on it.
