I don't think there is any disputing that stars generally correspond to success on the field, but here's something interesting.

Over the last five years, team A has an average Rivals recruiting class ranking of 7.4. Team B has an average class ranking of 7.6. Team A is in the hunt for a national championship. Team B barely had a winning record.

Team A is OSU and Team B is FSU. Clearly OSU is doing something right and FSU has been doing a lot wrong beyond just bringing in talent.
