Could it be any more fitting? The program with the long history of paying players now does it above board and buys a championship.

Yep, some of these threads get ridiculous at times and come across as just plain ass jealousyOh good Lord. This is why people think we're such a whiny fan base.
Ironically, Ohio State just beat two teams (Texas, Oregon) that have more money than them. Clearly winning involves more than just buying people.
And just what Jeeves......we're buying kids, too. In the NIL era, this is straight up loser talk.
Everyone does...as everyone is supposed toPSU also pays players BTW
Just had a conversation on this topic with a big Notre Dame fan.
“How much do you think Ohio State paid that quarterback?” he asked.
“About as much as Notre Dame paid their QB,” I replied.
“Oh no,” he said with his best alter boy voice. “We don’t buy players. Leonard always wanted to play for Notre Dame and finally got his chance.”
I honestly think he believed what he was saying.
The idea that you can win a championship without a huge NIL war chest is absurd. By mentioning Oregon you just prove the point that you need big money to win. The NIL required to recruit high school and portal talent and retain that talent to build a championship team is enormous.Yep. This is fan copium, and it happens everywhere. ND fans are in full blown "we can't compete with OSU money" mode. Yet there's good intel suggesting that ND was offering HUGE dollars for Quinn Ewers, among others.
NIL becomes the excuse when you lose. But if you win? Has NOTHING to do with NIL. It's because the kids always wanted to play for the shiny gold helmets!!! And the mystique of Touchdown Jesus!!!
ND fans are no different than most.
there are OSU fans who claim that NIL had nothing to do with their team's success. "It's the Buckeye brotherhood!". Also a dumb argument. Of course NIL mattered. But unlike many on this board, I don't believe for a second that it was ONLY NIL. It was coaching, execution, recruiting, and all the intangibles that go into a championship team and culture.
the idea that you can buy a championship is grossly exaggerated. Ask Oregon.
Everyone does...as everyone is supposed to
Ohio State winning yesterday was good for Penn State and all of the Big Ten. We had our opportunity. These "they bought a title" threads are true about every team that even made the playoff.
Sounds like our fan base on why DDS, Allar, Allen and Nick came back--not about moneyJust had a conversation on this topic with a big Notre Dame fan.

That's really not the differenceOhio State can execute a basic swing pass to the RB for an easy touchdown. PSU couldn’t. That’s the difference.
OSU won because they got a few key guys in the portal. A bigger factor was the fact that they were able to get a number of upper classmen to come back for another year. Did NIL help? Sure. That is modern CFB, like it or not. If things continue as they are, in 5 years 20M will look like a pauper's budget.Could it be any more fitting? The only issue with OSU is that they were either candid or stupid enough depending on your point of view to publicly disclose the number. As stated earlier in this thread the beat 2 teams with higher payrolls then they have. Even Tennessee an upper mid level SEC team was only 4M less than OSU. I would think that GA, Bama, LSU and Ole Miss had payrolls equal to or higher than OSU but didn't disclose it.
Penn State doesnt beat OSU (or other big teams) because the team lacks composure during the key moments/big moments/ late in the game. 13 games into the season we have guys jumping off sides, getting stupid penalties, and above all... not making the play or a big play. It is coaching and a mindset of the team. OSU comes up big. Penn State comes up little. You can pinpoint 4-6 plays per game each year. PSU has talent similar to OSU except WR. Does PSU get the scoop and score or a long pass down the field late in the game... NOPE. OSU gets that play and breaks PSU. When the chips are down, PSU lacks the composure.
In big games, you have to play big. Make BIG plays. PSU is good and for stretches... many times they are great... as good as any team in the country. However..... when it gets to the key part of the game..... PSU does not make the play. They lack composure. Its coaching and mentality of the players. Players change. Coaching is the same.
Examples ( I could write tons) .... 3 rd and 11... give up the first and the other team continues the drive. Need a first down or two to kill the game clock, we get stopped and we punt... Need 5 for a first down... dropped pass. 3rd and 2.... jump off sides, 3rd and 9... tackle and get a penalty for celebration... Happens every big game... I would add that the play calling adds to this... stupid double pass back when we are running the ball at 8 a clip or just stupid clock management. Knowing when to be aggressive or putting a game out of reach. You can go through these big games and point to 4 or 5 big plays... and PSU does not make those plays when it counts in the big games.
Very true but many fan bases - on the outside looking in - just don't want to hear it. It's always the other teams that buy players and even cheat. JUST RIDICULOUSEveryone does...as everyone is supposed to

Michigan cheated. That is not where i "want PSU "to be."100%. To suggest that OSU simply outspent everybody and thus they're champions is just stupid. It's copium for those who can't accept that they are the standard and the standard by which we should measure ourselves. I also look to those peak Harbaugh teams as the standard, too, in terms of their player development, retention, etc. But obviously the Conor Stallions thing figures into that. Regardless, those programs are where we want to be.
If people honestly think a whole myriad of SEC teams + Oregon didn't spend as much or more than OSU, they're delusional.
Stratification in resources isn't new. SEC teams have been buying players for generations. And while they reaped the benefits, history is littered full of teams that won titles without SEC-level bagman stuff. Coaching and execution and development and the intangibles all factor into this.
hate Michigan all you want, and yes they cheated. But they didn't win the 2023 title simply because of Stallions. They had that "it" factor. Same with Ohio State.
