Who wins the Hodge this year?

CONTROVERSIAL STATEMENT: Spencer Lee, who was downright Retherfordian against the deep 125 field at nationals, has a better resume for the Hodge than Kyle Snyder

Spencer Lee isn't winning the Hodge. He'll have to settle for the "Golden Abacus", awarded to the highest-rated wrestler in the Dual Impact Index each year. (incidentally, it's an "award" that Zain had won the past two seasons, and you had to go back to 2011 for the last time a non-Penn Stater other than Logan Stieber won it)

If Zahid is wrestling in the PAC12, is that really considered good competition?
You must have missed that Zahid was seeded #1. That was in fact due to an ever so slightly slightly record of who he beat. Not a result of the exhibition won.

And the Hodge always considers past collegiate championships and it should. It does not consider freestyle or world events which you agree it shouldn’t.

I was aware of Zahid's number 1 seed, but have no idea who he wrestled. I'll take everyone's word for it though, and he certainly seemed deserving of the seed, given his performance against Hall.

Past NCAA championships should not be included in the criteria, in my opinion, but it's not my award so I'll defer to the Hodge committee.

I agree with this. This year's MVP should be based on this year. How novel.

However, reality sets in ... voters gonna vote how they see fit regardless of what the criteria say. Dieringer over Zain. Countless examples in other sports. (See MLB Hall of Fame voting where "first ballot" is significant because reasons.)

So if they're gonna do it anyway and Hodge committee won't revoke voting privileges for absurdities, then next best thing is shaping criteria to account for and minimize those effects.

I don't like it either but understand it.

Spencer Lee is going to be scary next year. Possibly going undefeated with as many bonus point wins. Look for him to challenge Nolf, Nickal and Valenzia next year for the Hodge. Maybe even Mark Hall.
