How about msoccer, wfield hockey, mbasketball, wbasketball, mlax, wlax, baseball - that's 7 sports. Psu - wrestling, wvolleyball. Thats 2. Anything else?
I will just look, historically, at the first sport on your list. Football. Yes, in 2014, Maryland beat Penn State in football so last year Maryland was better. Now, over the years the teams have played 38 times and Penn State has won 35...Maryland 2...and 1 was tie. Before last year, Maryland's last (and only other) win was in 1961. But, last year, damn, Maryland did beat us by 1. Congrats!
I just pulled up another sport...women's basketball. I figured what the heck, both teams have been pretty good at that through the years. This year Maryland did beat us, twice, so Maryland was better this year. Historically? Well, before this year the team met 22 times. Penn State won 14 (6 in a row) and Maryland 8. Hmmmm. Well, congrats on this year!

How can UM be better when some of the games haven't been played yet?

PSU beat UM in both w soccer and tennis so that's at least two that i know of that you are lying about. There may be more.

Oh my. I pulled up another sport, field hockey. Yep, this year Maryland beat us fair and square, at Maryland, by one when Maryland was ranked No. 2. Before this year? Penn State led the series 20-11-1. Hmmm. Well, congrats on this year!

One final one, just to be fair. Men's basketball, our all time suckiest sport. Yep, Maryland beat us twice this year, and my gosh, they should have. They have always had a far superior men's basketball program right. I mean, they probably dominate us in basketball like we dominate them in football. So, let's look at the record before this year. The teams played 17 times and Maryland won.....9. Wait a minute. 9? That means we won 8? In our suckiest sport, we were almost even all time with the mighty Terps? Well, congrats on this year!!

Well, everything you posted anyway. I think you were the 14th post and the first to bring up "this year". It's understandable, given what appears to be Penn State's historical dominance. You take your victories where you can find them. And, one of your posts did say "The sports that Maryland does compete in-they pretty much dominate PSU". I guess you meant to add "this year" at the end of the sentence because, on just on the few I picked out, it appears historically the opposite is true. Well, like I said, this year Maryland won more games. Enjoy it. The history between the two schools says it won't last. Penn State is the dominant program. Maryland...well, you'll always have this year.

Look, bozo, we know you love to make that

point at every opportunity you get and we're sure that it has nothing to do with your little precious playing lacrosse for Maryland. But the question was how is adding Maryland (we'll ignore Rutgers for the sake of argument) better for PSU? Even accepting your argument that Maryland is better at many sports than PSU, how does that help PSU? How would spending more money on most of these sports that have no hope of ever turning a profit in order to be competitive be to PSU's benefit? And if the powers that be need the addition of Maryland to persuade them that PSU needs a better basketball team, then they are just as lost as you are.

Don't enjoy my alma mater getting beat but it is what it is.....

Psu is not going to start beating umd in mens soccer, field hockey, basketball, lax, baseball, etc just like umd is not going to start beating psu in volleyball, wrestling.

This whole side debate seems kinda stupid to me.

PSU has one of the best all around sports programs in the country. Maryland is not, but they do have elite performances in a few sports and are generally competitive in a decent number of sports. I would consider them to be in the upper half of the Big Ten in terms of overall athletics and that is part of the reason why they were a great addition to the conference: good athletics, good size market, geographically sensible, large public AAU school that fits into the "character" of Big Ten schools. They are a great fit for the conference. Not being as good overall athletically as PSU does not make them "bad" athletically.

Rutgers OTOH is only valuable as an addition based on the potential revenue from having exposure in NJ/NYC and the large population there and because they are a public flagship school. Athletically, they suck across the board. They obviously weren't expected to add anything to the athletic prowess of the conference, unlike Maryland.

PSU has had a tough go against Maryland this year head to head, but that won't always be the case. That said, Maryland is at least competitive if not great in a number of sports that they'll always win their fair share of head to head games against PSU.

Well, for starters, it helped the Penn State alums in New Jersey, Maryland, and Washington DC tremendously! I'm in Baltimore right now and had a great time the last 2 days rooting for Wisconsin and Michigan State with everyone else! This is HUGE Big Ten Country now! They love the Big 10 and absolutely despise the ACC. With my daughter living down here, I feel Ike I have an extra Home game every 2 years! Plus, getting exposure for our basketball team down here and in the NYC Metro is finally getting our name on the I95 corridor map. They take their basketball seriously down here.

Why isn't he akronturtle? He argues against Penn State sports at every opportunity.

Because more viewers will be forced to pay for the BTN even though they have no interest in watching it.

True, because in a couple of those sports you cite, we don't have to start. We already lead the all time series in field hockey and baseball. Ah well, you do have this year.

Where is Maryland ranked in the Learfield Cup? They must

be a lot higher than lowly Penn State, right?

more money from carriage rights sold doesn't mean the Big Ten gets more. The TV rights contract between the conference and the BTN is locked in until 2032 and there are no indications that it's being re-negotiated. My guess is that it's a pawn being held by Fox that won't be played until the first-tier TV rights negotiations really start heating up. When the dust clears from that, don't be surprised (I'm not predicting this) if the Big Ten no longer has an equity stake in the BTN.
The B1G renegotiates its rights fees with the networks effective after the 2016-17 academic year.

B1G schools projected to make $45M with new TV dea

Just because Maryland won, doesn't make them better. PSU completely blew that game, and were under undeserved sanctions. The better team doesn't always win.

Re: Ill make it real easy for you......

no rational person is every going to suggest that Maryland is going to beat PSU in football on anything but a freak occasion. 2014 would certainly qualify as a freak condition.

equally, psu is not going to beat MD in LAX, MBB or some similar sports.

each school has its strengths.

Mich, OSU, PSU, Wisconsin, MSU, Nebraska and Iowa (the BIG elite) are pretty much going to own Md in football. I think that would pretty much be the view of most normal/rational observers of BIG football.

To silence those who (live on the EC) have been whining about the lack of easy to get to away games.
