I wasn’t fully aware that they had privately raised $12 million for Stanford wrestling... enough to self fund for years and years.

I admit to not following it closely, but is the Stanford decision based in part on Title 9, in that the number of male and female athletes can’t be skewed too much? If so, the self-funding wouldn’t be the main issue.

No. Stanford is cutting 11 sports, men's and women's both. And the money raised by Keep Stanford Wrestling included enough to start a women's wrestling program.

The cynic in me is wondering if Stanford's decision is a strategy to change what student athletes they admit -- meaning to shift toward admitting primarily wealthy students whose parents will make large donations, and who are more easily placed into high-earning jobs after school. Except for rowing and sailing, the sports they're cutting are primarily middle- and lower-income students.

Call me crazy on that, but Stanford Athletics was embroiled in the recent college admissions bribery scandal, and fired a head coach over it. That coach has accused the Stanford AD of complicity with the scandal ringleader. And Stanford is acting like it has something to hide.

Man. I do feel bad for TaTo. He tries hard. He innovates. He has a leaf blower. He loves his kids and probably his wrestlers. There’s nothing really wrong with him except he’s not Cael.

Umm ... that's Urban Meyer. And I don't feel bad for him -- he should've been in the locker room consoling his team instead of sulking on a golf cart.

I suggest anyone interested or commenting on Stanford Wrestling to go to their website "Keep Stanford Wrestling".

In adding to some comments above:

The male wrestling athletes are also trying to get support behind a women's wresting team to counter the Title 9 issues.

Read the Testimonials on that website. They are impressive as hell as they are from past wrestlers. There is not a problem with recruiting middle/lower class athletes. If one can be accepted by Stanford's admissions, they Will not have to worry about from where their next meal is coming. Most of these guys are extremely successful upon graduation. They can give back with no problem if that is their wish.

I jumped on their bandwagon today. Signed their petition, bought some clothes supporting the cause for myself and sons and made a small pledge. Apparently pledges will be asked to be fulfilled only if the Administration changes their (asinine) position.

The website is a one stop shop. Clothing sales do have a termination date.

Never redshirted to boot. HR blasted him for being an old Freshman. Now they are rejoicing their 6 and 7 year squad. What a joke!
Historically speaking, when HR takes on a specific chant karma will always just bite them in the ass.
The easiest way I can think of to make a fortune is take the HR collective to Las Vegas, play the roulette table. Ask the collective "red" or "black" and whatever the answer bet the opposite. Given their propensity to be wrong, at 100 dollars a bet it should only take a day to win a million or two.
