Flo bros and Askren addressing BB's weird tendency to go for a cradle instead of securing an actual takedown, then giving up the position and getting scored on. In all of his losses except the Yianni match, he makes some absolutely confounding decisions.

I don't know how you fix that; BB isn't a HS kid beating up on other guys his size anymore. He's regularly wrestling top-5/10 opponents who are significantly BIGGER than him.

Agree, I've posted this before. You listen to him talk, read his interviews - he's obviously a cerebral and highly-intelligent young man.

But the mat IQ has really been lacking this year. Maybe that's a case of what you refer to - he's used to getting away with things that he shouldn't be doing on the mat. Or - if you're going to look at this glass-half-full - maybe he's got a super high wrestling IQ which can lead to some of the stuff we're seeing, but he's not able to pull that off physically as he is at the wrong weight class. But I'd like to see some evidence of that first before counting on it. And most of those guys are really adaptive, have a lot of different ways to attack and figure out ways to beat you.

I guess we'll see next year. Until then, it's a question mark. I'd feel better if he was making some big strides this year, but he seems like the same guy he was last year. Which really isn't a disaster at all. But we've got guys here penciling in national finalist just because of a change in weight and I just don't see that at all. Hope I'm wrong.

Incredibly ironic. Askren was well known for locking up cradles from neutral and bypassing takedowns in favor of pins.

I also think probably our coaches can’t be too upset with Beau going for big moves either. They clearly can coach him to better discernment, but overall they are probably happy Beau has those instincts to accompany his abilities. I remain in the camp that believes Beau will be a different dude at 141—but I’ll admit he has some mental game growing to do. He’s in the right place for it though.

Didn't realize that Gavin fought a fighter training in State College. I don't really watch MMA, but found this interesting. Maybe it's just salt from a coach, but it would make sense if PA valued wrestling more than other places too.:

Keep in mind, that dude literally looked (I'm not exaggerating) like double Gavin's size. I can't imagine Gavin had much shot to do much damage in striking. They were fighting at 135 ... as evidenced, I don't believe Gavin has the reach and size for that weight, there will be other people like the guy he fought.

I'm rooting for the kid but I don't think Gavin is in for a long MMA career if this is how his first amateur fight goes, a controversial decision to an 0-1 amateur who allegedly hit him 50 times to Gavin's 4 lol (I did not watch the fight so I'm just going off that graphic). Elite wrestlers usually absolutely plummet competition their first few amateur matches, make them look like they shouldn't be in the same ring.
