Why "Social Media" is great....

Keep in mind, that dude literally looked (I'm not exaggerating) like double Gavin's size. I can't imagine Gavin had much shot to do much damage in striking. They were fighting at 135 ... as evidenced, I don't believe Gavin has the reach and size for that weight, there will be other people like the guy he fought.

I'm rooting for the kid but I don't think Gavin is in for a long MMA career if this is how his first amateur fight goes, a controversial decision to an 0-1 amateur who allegedly hit him 50 times to Gavin's 4 lol (I did not watch the fight so I'm just going off that graphic). Elite wrestlers usually absolutely plummet competition their first few amateur matches, make them look like they shouldn't be in the same ring.
50 to 2, only 2 punches out of 5 attempts. if I understand the chart, no kicks even attempted. No submission attempts but 4 takedowns.

It's not as far fetched as people (Iowa fans) want to make it to be. Iowa fans want to award Spencer for being a 4 timer and 3 time Hodge winner already. Yes, that'll almost certainly happen but it hasn't yet. Also, he'll get 3 Hodges in 5 tries, everyone else had 4. If we want to play hypotheticals, can we count Zain as a 4 timer since he likely is that if he redshirted and missed Stieber?

Stieber is a 4 timer, 2nd most points ever at NCAAs behind only Cael
Snyder is a 3 timer + Olympic Gold, basically changed heavyweight forever
Gable won't stack up the accolades but this is kind of a "duh" thing but if someone has to leave the list, it should be him.
Bo is a 4 time finalist, 3 time champ, Hodge.
Zain had the most dominant 3 year run ever after his redshirt, should have been a 3 time Hodge winner.

Competition wise, Spencer's competition at 125 was lesser in 2020, 2021. Spencer said it himself, basically everyone in 2021 who got on the podium with him at 125 were first timers. Can you argue Spencer should be on the list? Absolutely! But I can flip it and argue for any of those 5 over him as well.

Also, it's a freaking opinion list by Shane Sparks. It's not that serious. You have to be quite an a hole to attack Shane personally for something like this.

Ed Ruth interview For all of us Ed Ruth fans, I found this great recent interview (Sep. 2021) he did on The Wrestling Changed My Life Podcast. Some of the more interesting items touched on include: his matches in high school against Quentin Wright, his one year at Blair Academy, his thoughts on Jeff Buxton as a coach, him asking who this "Cael" was coming to Penn State as Ed had a pair of Cael Sanderson shoes sitting on the desk behind him :) [Ed was recruited by Troy Sunderland, but Cael came in before Ed came to Penn State], his room matches with Cael and Casey, his "having fun" wrestling philosophy, how Ed initially was given a scholarship in the 80% range but was told he would get a full ride if he AA'd and how Cael honored that promise from the previous coaching staff, Cael would have them write out their goals, how "freakishly strong" Casey is [I have heard this same thing from multiple Penn State wrestlers], he would coach on average between 10-15 camps each summer while in college, the Penn State coaches encouraged the wrestlers to find out what wrestling style/technique worked best for them and then the coaches would recommend tweaks or additional technique, his time in MMA and his current role as Assistant Coach at University of Illinois.

Watching this interview you can see why "Easy" Ed got his nickname. He still has that great smile and I am glad he is back on the college wrestling scene. He is still one of my all-time favorites. Enjoy!

He was my kids favorite! I would ask if she wanted to watch a dual and her response was... let me know when Ruth is up. 😊

Watch Kolat and the one fight he had. Wrestling skills alone don't make a fighter.

It actually annoyed me that Oklahoma State were with us through Saturday night last year. 2 Blood Round Forfeits (one over us), an undeserved walk to the semis for Boo Lewallen (he lost to Josh Heil but got the win then he got a mono struck Murin) made them look way closer to us than they actually were. You can sense their fans are getting cocky again, saying they would beat PSU in a dual this year after Michigan because "they match up well" and how they're going to be our biggest challenger for 2023 onward.

The 3 dual loss and another coming tomorrow was some humble pie their fans need.

Tomorrow (Saturday) night, broadcast on Flo.

I like the 🇺🇸 chances in this one

I also think probably our coaches can’t be too upset with Beau going for big moves either. They clearly can coach him to better discernment, but overall they are probably happy Beau has those instincts to accompany his abilities. I remain in the camp that believes Beau will be a different dude at 141—but I’ll admit he has some mental game growing to do. He’s in the right place for it though.
Maybe Beau just wants to be Bo.
