Why Spencer Lee Destroyed Fellow Iowa Hawkeye

Why does this continue to be a story? Ayala wanted to wrestle. Got handled. And mom tweets in his defense. Spencer did absolutely nothing wrong here.

He should have destroyed him and Ayala could have mf. Buttt his face plant at end was a bit much unless something was said then lee could have done that to let the youngster know who he’s talking to lol. The lee doesnt wrestle him in the room would concern me if its true, senior leader not helping younger kids in the room and all.

Ayala wanted to wrestle and got destroyed. That’s as it should be. It’s the face mush, staring down at him and yelling toward his coaches that is not behavior I’d want in a supposed leader and face of the team. It’s actually the opposite of leadership in that it’s indicative of a me-first attitude and a real arrogance.

Again, it’s not a giant issue, IMO, but a lot of people are just burying their head in the sand about Spencer’s behavior and I don’t think that’s right either.

Can anyone imagine Mark Hall, Zain, Nick, AB, Nolf, etc yelling at Cael and crew in the same fashion? They’d be pummeled with dodge balls for eternity for one thing

Exactly - watch what people do, not what they say. People that have turned this kid into a minor deity are spinning themselves in circles rationalizing this behavior. Captains shouldn’t do this stuff - at least not in public.

Comes across as punkish. I'm telling you this shit has been going on since high school it's just been squashed so it's not in the know.

Yeah, this is the kind of thing you'd expect to see from Richie Lewis. Except for the winning the match part.

The boneheads over on HR embrace this kind of trashy behavior.

It’s unclear to me what actual normal Iowa wrestling fans think of it all.

There is a reason so many people cheered when DeSanto beat him in Hershey and it had nothing to do with his college choice.

Watching Spencer tilt everyone has become tiresome. If he goes on a tear and starts decking everyone or at least has a more diverse wrestling style in the second half of the season, I'd be elated. Either way, I would like to see him have a close match in the third to see how he holds up late.

I know this is blasphemy but I felt the same way with Zain and the bow and arrow. As with Spencer's arm bar and tilt, Zain could hit his move on everyone and you knew it was coming. World class move and domination but rinse and repeat.

That was why I loved Bo and Jason's style. You had absolutely no idea what was coming out of the toy box with those two (ask any Iowa wrestler with Bo or the ref at Penn when Jason hit his 1st Winn D to my knowledge). You could not coach against them, short of telling your wrestler to stay and hide in the locker room as it will have team result.

I'm sure refs at times were praying they would recognize what was happening and to immediately and properly award takedowns and back points with those guys.

Referenced recently, I replayed Nolf at the Southern Scuffle over and over when he hit his Jonesy, I had no idea what I saw.

The element of surprise in combat is great, especially for fans.

(Still love you Zain aka dad)

“Variety is the spice of life”

That said, the bow-and-arrow never gets old for me. Just too brutal to get stale. I feel the same about inside trips — always exciting . . . but yeah, tilting doesn’t receive the same glamor grade from me. Kinda the “leg lace” of folkstyle.

Except Zain wasn't only the bow and arrow. He used several moves depending on what the opponent gave him. He also used the hammerlock + claw tilt, then slipped in the half after getting swipes. He used a side headlock against Mayes in the NCAA finals.

And then there was his half ...

Zain could pin from the bow and arrow though. Correct me if I am wrong but to my knowledge Spencer hast pinned from his tilt and even if he has, I still don't care.

Zain was more exciting.

Spencer hast pinned from his tilt, not that you care

As a Iowa fan, would you like to see Spencer open up more if he is healthy? Do you get somewhat bored with his tilt?
Listen the Brands brothers teach one move per wrestler. Doing more than that would cause extreme stress and undue pressure on the brain meaning they would be asking the wrestler to think. They stick with one move per wrestler and pushing out of bounds that's the Iowa way. Lol

If you have watched many Spencer Lee matches in the last 10 years you would see a wide variety of offensive scoring. (He pinned Nathan Tomasello with his ass in one of them! 😆)

Spencer uses the Tilt in folkstyle so much because he is a master of it and only a couple out there can stop it. Why would he divert from a plan than consistently works? Stuff your head in the armpit, grab the wrist and tilt the man!

Why would a fan of his be "bored" with his domination? Do you get sick of basketball players dunking even though they have done it a 1000 times? Sick of home runs? MMA knockouts? Repeated Touchdowns that look the same?

It seems to me, you have it in your head he only has the tilt as an offensive weapon. I would strongly disagree.

So that's a no?

I'm not asking what your opinion is on why Spencer does what he does. I wanted to know if you are tired of seeing him tilt everyone 3 times a match to get his win. Would you personally prefer to see him pin more, get 5-8 takedowns or just keep winning any way he can?

Your question was "Do you get somewhat bored with his tilt?"

I responded "Why would a fan of his be "bored" with his domination?"

So you answered my question with a question, hence, the second question.

I'll try and decipher your answer and say you are ok with Spencer's wrestling style as long as he wins. You can say you wish Spencer did something different without your board lambasting your opinion.

Congratulations you figured out that I enjoy it when Spencer puts a guy in a tilt. I'll let you know if I get bored with it ever.

I'll even answer your other blatantly obvious question. Yes I would like to see Spencer get more pins.

Most everything typed on these boards is an opinion and gets lambasted often. Another day in the life.
