With brothers closing what are some places we miss?

Pedros- which is where Babys is now. That is where I learned to love mexican food but I am sure I would not enjoy it today after living in California. You gotta start somewhere.

Ah, Pedros...chilli, cheese, and chips at 3 AM to finish a night of drinking cheap beer. I'm amazing my stomach isn't in open rebellion at just the thought of what I used to do to it.

Was Playland the name of the big pinball arcade centered on College Ave. ? A lot of quarters into the Playboy machine, PacMan, Space Invaders, etc.

Not so much a restaurant question (although they did have a restaurant)...do you guys remember the South Ridge Motor Inn? I tended bar there for a while. Wasn’t much to it, but my buddies drank for free.:)

Train Station/Train Yard
Woolworth Lunch Counter
"the" All American Rathskellar
Roy Rogers
Hooters
Surf Club
Mr. C's
Joey Z's (I think it's gone)
PlayLand
Gingerbread Man
is Baby;s still around?

Good calls! Remember OIP (Orig Italian Pizza) - they had an italian sub that rocked

If you wanted to venture out of town a little bit on home football weekends, you could have gone to what was at the time a Best Western (or was it a Holiday Inn?) in Milesburg where the football team stayed the night before games.

La Bamba. Still one of the best burritos I’ve ever had. Hot sauce was hot too. From a 1997 Collegian article....

Burritos as big as your head have arrived.

La Bamba, a family-owned chain of Mexican restaurants, has recently opened its doors for business in downtown State College.

The fast food establishment, located just behind McDonald's, 442 E. College Ave., began serving its tacos, tortas and head-size burritos on Jan. 31.

The super-size burritos weigh about two pounds and can be "hard to handle," said Jaime Romo, manager of La Bamba, 111 Sowers St.

J.P. Jaworski (sophomore-premedicine), who recently consumed one of the super-size burritos, did not quite agree with that assessment.

"I ate it too fast," he said. "I didn't give it time to be hard to handle."

The first La Bamba opened in 1988 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Additional locations have since opened at other Big Ten schools and in various cities throughout the Midwest. The State College location is the 15th La Bamba, Romo said.

The restaurant is open daily from 11 a.m. until "after the bars close," Romo said.

that was a great place. remember coming back drunk one night and we stopped. friend went to the bathroom so we took multiple packets of their triple death sauce and put them in his burrito. then we all were complaining as we ate them how spicy they were and challenged each other to finish them. the triple hot sauce burrito was literally making him sweat profusely to the point we were getting concerned he might be permanently injured. of course when he finally gave up we told how big of a wimp he was.

I'll bet the guys miss the Uni Mart death dogs from the
Obviously change needs to happen but from a nostalgic point of view can be a bummer. When you graduated has a significant impact on this of course.

I have many I miss but will start with:

roy Rogers - ate there 3 days per week when lived at Penn tower 88-89 school year

vesuvios - amazing bread for its subs
Cadillac Alley?

Down Home Steaks, on Beaver Ave.
Boot's Dairyette, on College Avenue across Atherton
Nitty Lodge, later The Deli
The roast beef place on South Garner, next to the movie theater

I also moved to Cali after graduation for a while after being a Pedro's aficionado.

I remember watching the food truck unload at Pedro's one day. The meat was labelled USDA Adequate! ;)

Munchies--cheap breakfast. Wasn't around long. ca. 1977 or so.

Boalsburg Steak House.
Boalsburg Steak House holds a special place in my heart. My wife and I used that restaurant as a learning experience for my kids for years. We try to get them to understand how poor we were when we dated and were first married. We would tell them about when she came to visit me when I was in grad school and we went to the Boalsburg Steak House and were seated by the hostess. We looked at the menu and realized we couldn’t afford to eat there so we got up and left. Embarrassing as hell at the time, but funny now since eating out at any restaurant is no longer a concern. We’ve always tried to get our kids to understand that we worked our way up to this and we couldn’t always afford whatever we wanted, but I’m not sure how much they really comprehended. But the Boalsburg Steak House has always held a special place in my heart....I’ve always told her we should have gone back later in life and ordered everything on the menu, but my wife doesn’t think that way....she’s way too practical for that.

Here's an oldie...The Copper Kitchen. The location was eventually taken over by the Lions Den. The Copper Kitchen was owned by the Nastas family. Mrs Nastas was my 4th grade teacher. She used to wear go-go boots. Pretty racy in the early 70's.
Thanks great memories there. My parents would take my roommate and me there.

Anyone remember Herlocher's from the early 1960's? I was a cook, server, took out the trash and anything else Charley threw at me. I got a job first day on campus my freshman year and continuously worked up until the final two weeks of my senior. When I quit Charlie said don't come to me for a reference, my answer, I didn't go to college to get a reference from a little pizza maker, I did say that and he never paid me for my final few days. Of course, never realized the little pizza maker would become a big shot.

i assume these are the same savvy business ayyholes that took the Gastigers behind the shed and kicked a couple generations of Skeller-dwellers in the crotch ... nice people

Does anyone remember "Winky's"? or "Frugal MacDougals" or "The Red Barn"?

My dad grew upon "Pop's Mexi Hots". On the corner beside Keeler's Bookstore. Does anyone remember that?

Red Barn chain Harrisburg and State College. Loved the Big Barnie on Sunday to soak up alcohol remaining in the system.
Pop Mexi-Hots for lunch. Chili dog, chips and a soda for a buck.

The specials were a good deal there. We used to order on Sunday nights my senior year. I had a thing for the chimichangas. I also participated in my fair share of Taco Tuesdays freshman year when I lived in Beaver Hall. I haven't seen it mentioned, but the Hi Way Pizza cut shop on Garner St. was my favorite place to go freshman year. I can see those pepperoni slices right now. I used to top it off with a piece of cheese cake. Tasty.

The warm grease used to nestle in the cupped pepperoni

Playland and Campus Casino were one block apart on College Ave. Both were packed on weekends. I can remember all the different game sounds - bells, beeps and sirens going off at the same time. Great places to go and see friends, could always find someone I knew there.

I remember that as that being the last restaurant I saw until we hit Altoona in olden times.
The only place to eat beyond it, that I remember, was the Dairy Queen. That's been gone for a long time too.

Questions for you State College locals.

I have fond memories of Suzie Wong's and understand that the daughters (including Suzie herself) still make egg rolls, but only sell commercially.

1) Aside from certain bars and restaurants, is it possible for an ordinary Joe to purchase said egg rolls elsewhere? Supermarket?

2) Are they still as good as I remember or just "meh"?

Someone else is better able to answer. My question for you is, what's with the super generic handle? Mine sucks, but you always had good ones in the past.

stoneys? They also sold cocaine and that was the end of that
Maybe different time but we used to go to Stoney's on Fridays for happy hour and stay to closing. Don't remember it being a seafood and cocaine joint. I do remember its closing.

How about Hi-Way Pizza. Hooters before Hooters.

Winky's sounds familiar, but I can't place it. Red Barn was near the high school. Once in a while, some of us would sneak out and have lunch at Red Barn until one day we spotted the Principal sitting there. That ended that and we never went back.

The truth is I was wholly unprepared for my last permanent time out and needed to find a new board name quickly. I found an accompanying photo and sailed with it. What ....you don't like ships? :)

In the highly unlikely event I get escorted to the cyber-curb again, I'm confident you will like my next board name.....even I agree it's much better than this one, but I'm a firm believer in only having one board name at time.

Patience grasshopper.

Good. I was afraid that you had lost your fight and were taking yourself out to pasture.

it moved over to west Aaron. Same owner. Got bought out so they could put the road to the wegmans/target center
We go to the W. Aaron Dr. location sometimes. The drive-thru line can be forever there though. There was a Calder Alley location years ago. Did Don Boller own that one too?

I am surprised Vesuvio’s is getting so much run in this thread. I always thought it was overlooked and really liked their bread and pizza crusts.
Is Spat’s still around ? Haven’t been there in a couple of years.

No, Spats is not in that location. It disbanded with the change of Rathskellar ownership. It was merged into the Allen Street Grill and the fused restaurant is now called Spats at the Grill in the old Allen St. Grill location above the Corner Room.

Controversial topic here.
