It's Kirk Ferentz.
It could be Locksley.
Whatever. A litany of things went wrong last year. Journey Brown having to retire medically. Noah Cain being injured on the first series of the season. Micah Parsons sitting out to focus on the draft. Indiana getting a gift call in OT after a player scores when he isn't supposed to enabling the Hoosiers to get the ball back and score. Some might say that kind of game management is a recurring issue for Franklin, but I digress. Franklin's family had to stay away for health reasons, and it clearly had an impact on him. I don't know if Kirk Ciarrocca was a bad hire per se, but clearly, there were some issues on that side of the ball with an experienced QB at times looking lost and fumbling the ball frequently when hit and even getting benched for a time. I would guess there was some tension behind the scenes.
This year Franklin seems rejuvenated. It's clear he enjoys working with Yurcich. And he clearly likes this team. Penn State also appears to have hit a home run in the portal and in the JC ranks during the off-season based on the contributions we've seen so far. And PSU is winning quite a bit on the recruiting trail. I think things are really looking up right now. A lot of people had this team pegged at 1-2 or worse right now.
This team has a lot of potentially tough games ahead (6 of our future opponents, including Villanova, are unbeaten right now, and Ohio State is still Ohio State in the Big Ten until proven otherwise) but I like where things seem to be headed. I would not trade places with anyone in the country right now.
