I thought the defense held up better than I expected. They got worn down in second half, which i knew was coming with the lack of depth and inexperience. I had to keep looking at roster to see who was in there
Correct... as i predicted, they ran all over us. Ark played a "true" style of football in the first half, running and passing and trying to establish balance.
At the half, their staff realized that was stupid and came out and plowed us. I'm not a coach by any means but after that first 2nd half drive i would have told my players to simply get the QB unless they physically see the ball in the RB's hands and him actually running with the ball. Just presume the QB has it and nail him. And forget tackling him... just wrap him up and wait for help.
Offensively, Arkansas coaches decided we can't run so just go get SC. If we break a run here and there, small price to pay. Attack the QB, make him tired and prone to errors in judgment (see stupid first and goal pass that ended the game... a fresh SC likely throws that one away).
Kudos to Ark staff for reading the trends and making changes that knocked us out. Would they have been as effective if we had our real team in there? Doubt it. But this was a hodge-podge of kids who did the best they could and showed me promise for '22.
Since the OP missed the game and While it didn’t come back to hurt PSU, he should check out the fake punt. Was one of the worst executed efforts I can recall. What was that?!?! Right up there with IU’s vs PSU 2 years ago when our LS didn’t get the signal the fake was off.
What about the OC?? We were running the ball rather well in the first half - mixing pass and run. Then, we go on long counts, down to the last second and no running the ball. What the hell. Few screens, nothing over the middle. Sean needs to move on and let Christian and the new recruits take over.
Let’s face it the offense was about as bad as one could be for a top ranked team. Blame goes squarely on the coaches. Franklin fires KC for MY to install this crap? All offensive coaches but Stubbs should be shown the door on Monday morning! The quad of Yurcich, Seider, Trautwein, and Howle were terrible in 2021. As bad as it could be. Get some old buggers in there who know how to play and Coach tough football. Get back to fundamentals, Jimmy Franks! Stop with the appreciate and grateful crap and get mad!
I really believe that Sean must move on. We have tremendous talent in wings for QB. You will lose one or two if Clifford stays on. Must get an OL coach and better recruiting of OL prospects or we are not going anywhere. A past hallmark of PSU teams was big, very physical linemen. Many went NFL. Where are those linemen - who is going to the NFL from this OL?
