just announced a "collaboration" with the NFL.

given college ball, portals, and NIL how long before the XFL becomes a minor league for the NFL and starts taking kids who can't or don't want to go to college?

My back door neighbor is the director of player administration for the USFL.

i would say the issue is that most likley the NIL for players in college is going to be more than what the XFL is willing to pay. so why would somebody go directly to XFL. Goto a top P5 program, make a few hundred thousand in NIL money, take some no show classes to stay eligible for two years and then go into the NFL draft. Plus the coaching and S&C programs, etc..in a high end P5 program is has to be better than the XFL.

Fair enough. But I have no idea how much the Left Guard is making at Iowa State or Cal.

In addition, what keeps kids in college is the CBA the NFL has with the Player's Union. You can't enter the draft until, what, your HS senior class are three years removed? Now that college players are professionals, what is the logic of keeping kids out of the NFL? I suspect that an interim step be introduced. And that is a secondary path to the NFL to compliment the traditional college path.

The USFl launch will be interesting. Their draft is tomorrow with games starting mid April IIRC. A big problem for them is having only 8 teams, (pretty much all eastern), and playing all games in Birmingham, AL. All playoffs are in Canton, OH. I get it’s a cost saving attempt but I’m mot sure how you build a fan base in Pittsburgh and Philly when the teams never step foot in those cities.

but NFL is not the NBA where an 18 year old or 19 year old can compete. In the end, most players need those years to physically mature and be in a college S&C program to be able to even sniff competing at a NFL level. So not many players that can go from high school to pro's and those that are that good can make huge bank in NIL money.

and the left guard for Iowa State isn't going to be good enough for the pro's anyway, so why not goto Iowa state free and get a degree and professional level coaching then try to make it in the XFL/NFL after that.

Not sure kids being able to make money as college athletes puts the XFL in stronger position. They could always take kids who couldn't or didnt want to go to college. NIL means kids can probably make more being a Sooner or a Buckeye than a Houston Roughneck or a Tampa Bay Viper.

..and that is where an NFL "minor league" comes in. (potentially)

And LG at "Iowa State". If you check the NFL rosters, there are tons of players from smaller programs who would not be making NIL. I'll throw out the example of our own Arnold E who xfered in from Temple. He is going to go in by the end of the second round in all probability. In 2021, the MAC had 66 players on NFL rosters.

not sure the point. those kids going to G5 programs out of high school get a free college degree, free room and board, free coaching and a small stipend. if they go from high school to the XFL, what do they get compared to that?

There are tons of players from smaller programs because there are tons of smaller programs. It's an incredibly low % of the kids who start off on one of those small program rosters that make it. The XFL can't afford to have that sort of success percentage.

A few hundred thousand dollars a year.

I don’t see XFL paying a few hundred thousand per year for the average player in addition to training table, S&C program, travel expenses, high level coaching and support staff, etc

College isn’t for everyone. I have no problem with giving kids more choices. Plus, it is just the beginning. These kids could pave the way for a great revenue sharing college alternative

There's not enough die-hard football watching fans to make the XFL work long term even if they get some of the best kids to sign out of high school. The league will only help to destroy college football even more. What has made college football so successful is history, tradition and emotion built into the college watching fanbase and their teams. Even the casual or non-existent football fan will still cheer for their favorite college football team most Saturdays during the season. The XFL will never be able to come close to that kind of following. I won't give a rat's @ss about a 5 star high school player who goes to the XFL. The opposite would be true if he was coming to PSU or any other college team for that matter. JMHO.

I think hitching up with the NFL as an experimental league for various rule changes means a better chance at survival. Do practice squad NFL guys go play, hoping to show out in hopes of getting a better look in preseason?
