Reviving the thread. Traveling to the Lehigh Valley after landing in Philly in the middle of July. Will take 476N to get there from the airport. Asking for the boards' superior knowledge base for either a good cheesesteak or roast pork place on the way. I hit a place in Villanova last time (can't remember the name), but looking for the best. Will land at noon and will be hungry. Thanks

hmm, that's a bit of a challenge. In part, because many of the ones I'd recommend for you would require you to go North on 95 from the airport, but you want to go South to get to 476.

The other challenge is that there aren't a lot of options right off of 476 before it becomes the Turnpike, but you really don't want to be getting on and off of the Turnpike just for a cheesesteak.

so, some random thoughts (not listed in any particular order)

a) Tony Luke's at the airport
- it's located in Terminal F. I don't know what terminal you're landing at, and most people want to get their luggage and car and get away from an airport ASAP. But it's an option. Tony Luke's, when it was one location in South Philadelphia, had one of the top roast pork sandwiches and cheesesteaks. They now have branched out in to quite a few stores in the Philadelphia region. I've never eaten at the Terminal F location, so I can't give any type of opinion, but it could be an option

b) Pie In The Sky (Wayne, PA)
- you'd take 95 South to 476. Then you'd take 476 for 13 miles to Exit 13 (St. Davids/Villanova). On the exit ramp, stay in the left two lanes. At the light turn left on to Route 30. Take that for 1.8 miles to 108 Lancaster Avenue. It's pretty good, and you'd only go 3.6 miles out of your way, AND it's relatively simple to get to from 476

c) LaSpada's Original Steaks and Hoagies (Milmont Park, PA)
- you'd take 95 South to 476. Stay in the right lane (there are 2) on the exit onto 476. Take Exit 1 (MacDade Blvd). The offramp is a little winding, but eventually you'll see signs for MacDade Blvd East. Take MacDade Blvd for 0.6 miles to 1002 MacDade. I wouldn't go out of my way for LaSpada's, but it's pretty convenient, only costs you 1.2 miles, and is easy to get back to 476.

d) The Original Thunderbird (Broomall, PA)
- you'd take 95 South to 476. Then go on 476 North for 8.5 miles to Exit 9 (Broomall/Upper Darby). You'll get in the left lane on the offramp. At the light, you'll turn left onto Route 3 (also known as West Chester Pike). You'll take that for 0.7 miles to 2323 West Chester Pike. Another decent cheesesteak that's easy to get to -- 1.4 miles extra on your trip, and very easy to get back to 476.

e) Masterpiece Grill (Conshohocken, PA)
- you'd take 95 South to 476. Then go on 476 North for 16 miles. You'll take Exit 16A for Conshohocken/PA-23. You'd have to be in the left lane of the exit, as the right lane takes you toward Philadelphia. I believe shortly after the exit you have to turn right to stay on PA 23. You'll continue on this into Conshohocken. I believe that as you cross the bridge PA 23 becomes Fayette Street in Conshohocken. Anyway, you'll go 1.1 miles after the exit to get to 523 Fayette Street. There are several cheesesteak options in Conshohocken, but Masterpiece is good, and it involves the fewest turns.

There are lots of other options, but I've tried to keep things pretty simple for you after leaving the airport/for returning to 476.

I hope the above helps. Feel free to post any questions you have about any of the above suggestions.

To add to the airport option, they opened a Geno's pretty recently in the food court between B and C.

While we are on the subject ... I also had a cheese steak from Mama's on Belmont. It sat pretty heavy on my belly for a day or two. I attributed it the "excessive" amount of cheese as described earlier in the thread.
Owned by distant cousins of mine, actually. It's a different kind of cheesesteak as it uses a lot of mozzarella. Went there with my cousin the last time I was in town.

But my favorite is Dallesandros in Roxborough. Got to put one on my expense account last time...:):D and took my co-workers there. They'd never had a real cheesesteak before. And then, of course, we got some Italian water ice and later some Bassetts

...coming from a cheesesteak noob who hasn't been near PA in decades, do the phili style cheesesteaks being recommended here use cheez wiz? Do they have to be considered excellent?

most places offer that as an option; the infamous "with whiz" order.

to each their own ... I can't stand cheesesteaks that have Cheez Whiz on them ... haven't had one of them in decades.

I'm going to be at St Joe's University this weekend and I would welcome any Cheesesteak & Hoagie recommendations.

Not having lived in the Philly area for the last 20 years I have been deprived of a good sandwich so, I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks!

West Philly? NONE!

If you are coming down the Schuylkill then the place to go is Delasandros. Very easy to get to from the Schuylkill Exp. Get off at East Falls and go up the hill on Schoolhouse then left on Henry. It will be about a mile down on Henry.

Don't get whiz. That is for kids and people from South philly without teeth.

If you take 76 then Delesandros.

Different sandwich but the Ye Old Ale House has great hot roast beef. It is at the top of 476 at Plymouth Meeting Exit.

Real Philly Cheesesteaks do not have Cheese Whiz on them. It seems like the Cheese Whiz phase started somewhere in the early 2000s. I spent a lot of time in Philly when I was a teenager pre-21 and then worked right around the corner from Delassandro's until 2000 (still haven't lost the weight gained from downing Cheesesteaks for lunch almost everyday for 6 years). By far Delassandro's is the best. Spent a lot of time at Jim's on South Street which were very good as well however, they seem to default to Cheesewhiz and you have to specifically request provolone(but that was a long time ago).

Tony Luke's are very good as well and if they are in the airport then there is you solution. Not too many that I remember down that way.

If you are feeling adventurous, if you get off the Blue Route at MidCounty on the way to the TP, you can head up Germanton Pike to 202 N to Blue Bell and hit Pudge's, last time I had one there it was very close to beating Delassandro's. You get a big cheesesteak that is worth every penny. Then continue on 202 to 63 then back on the TP.

Delasandros is a must for those in search of a cheesesteak (side note to some - there is no such thing as a Philly cheesesteak, it is just a cheesesteak). And whiz...ehh, not so much. Provolone - absolutely! With FO!

Ye Olde Ale for roast beef and beer. I used to work in Plymouth Meeting and this was a great lunch and after work spot.

Other spots in the burbs (and I know they have been mentioned before) - Pudges in Blue Bell / Centre Square - and now apparently in Conshohocken (I was not aware). I also enjoyed Phil's in Broad Axe - lots of "company meetings" there during March Madness back in the day.

whose rolls/buns/bread do they use? and IIRC there is a great place for rolls/buns somewhere in Philly, do you know?

Right. Somebody from out-of-town that flies in to Philadelphia International Airport, at noon, and is headed to the Lehigh Valley, and you would advise that he either a) take I-95 North and then I-76 West through the city, or b) take I-95 South, then I-476 North, and then I-76 East toward the city. Either way, you're sending him out of his way, and also pretty much guaranteeing that he'll be stuck in traffic. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, and would be cursing anyone that gave me such a suggestion while I was stuck in traffic.

And it's spelled "Dalessandro's"

The thread was at the top of the screen. I don't check the date of the OP. My post was AFTER YOUR post to an old thread.

Spelling errors? LOL @ mods who are full of themselves.

He wanted the best cheesesteak. My route might take him about 15 minutes out of his way. He would only go a couple miles N. on 95 and then NW on the Schuylkill. Allentown is NW.

Pretty petty post considering you also recommended Delasandros.

The OP was, as I indicated, from Sep. 2016. That is the the post that you quoted and to which you responded.

My response was to Centex, who resurrected the thread yesterday evening with a question for his upcoming trip. You also responded to his post in a subsequent post.

If you can't bother to pay attention to what you are responding to, to people's travel itinerary, or to how to spell a place you are recommending, that's your problem, not mine.

I am guilty as charged. I also remove the tags from pillows. The horror.

The cheese whiz replacement for provolone or American cheese goes at least back to 1980. To my knowledge, it began at Pat's and/or Geno's with their assembly line operations. It's just quicker. Even though it sucks, like many other sucky things, it became embedded.

Me, provolone inside-out WIT.

John's Pork House.

The best, hands down.

I can't help. But - If you're up in the middle of nowhere - Forksville General Store has as good a steak as you'll find (voted 3rd best in the state by the bastion of truth philly.com):

In the Port, go see this guy @ Port Town Heroes.

In SoFla: Baldino's does it the best.

Not sure why people obsess over cheese steaks anyway. The best sandwich ever invented is the Canadian Bacon Cosmo. Everyone knows this.

Have a family house 10 mins from Forksville, down 87 towards Hillsgrove ... Gods country.

I think I answered my own question, this is who I was thinking about, although I am open to other suggestions....

http://amorosobaking.com/
Sarcone's on 9th St. between Catharine (that's how they spell it) and Fitzwater has the best cheesesteak and hoagie rolls in my experience. It's a small-ish bakery that sells wholesale and retail. Back in my day, sometimes they'd run out of rolls in the late morning on the retail side. It could've changed.

If you go there, you'll find yourself eating chunks of a roll on your way back to your car.:)

Thanks Tom. I've been downtown at noon, and even the temptation of a Dalessandro's isn't worth it. On our way back to the airport the following week, we'll stop at Dalessandro's. We are spending the prior evening and most of the flyout day in downtown Philly (flight leaves at 5PM for Austin). Just checked the schedule and the Phils are out of town, so we'll just have to hit the museums instead

I don't know where you're coming from but Mama's mentioned above would be your best bet as far as I know. Excellent cheesesteak. Villanova is off the Gulph Mills exit of the Schuykill Exp. Mama's is just off of the Belmont Ave. exit, in Bala Cynwyd, towards Philly. If you were driving from Villanova, you'd enter the Schuykill at Gulph Mills and then go about 5-6 miles east to the Belmont Ave. exit. At the bottom of the exit, make a right. Mama's is about a 100 yards or so on the right, just off the expressway.

From the Villanova campus, without traffic, it's about a 20 minute drive. Good luck to your son at Villanova.

my suggestions:

a) Campus Corner (829 E Lancaster Ave, Villanova, PA)
- you can walk to this from 'Nova's campus
- not top tier, but certainly a good cheesesteak

b) Zesto PIzza & Grill (908 Conestoga Road, Bryn Mawr, PA)
- that's about a mile away
- again, not top tier, but not bad

c) Conestoga Pizza (905 Conestoga Road, Bryn Mawr, PA)
- also about a mile away
- it's OK, but the serve so many other things that cheesesteaks are far from a focus or a specialty

d) Pie In The Sky (108 Lancaster Avenue, Wayne, PA)
- this is about 2 miles away from campus
- they have a pretty good cheesesteak

You should be satisfied with a cheesesteak from one of the above.

Mama's uses a cheese combo on their steaks. It's mostly shredded mozzarella and some provolone. They kind of wrap the steak in the cheese on the grill. At least that's the way it used to be the last time I was there -- about 40 years ago.:D

Tom, we used to call the Campus Corner the Campus Crotch, though I'm sure ownership has changed at least a few times since way back then.:)

Hello Friends,

My son and are flying into Philadelphia tomorrow morning at 10:30 and will be headed to Lancaster Thursday before heading up to State College Friday morning. We plan to take the Blue route to the Turnpike. Any "easy access" good cheesesteak places along the way, perhaps an exit off the Blue Route?

If you change your route from the airport to Lancaster (which I would) to 95-322-1-41-30, there is a Delco's in the Painters Crossing Shopping Center at the intersection of 1 and 202.

Since you're using the Blue Route, the suggestions I gave for Centex would work for you as well:

some random thoughts (not listed in any particular order)

a) Tony Luke's at the airport

Any questions, get back to me.

FYI - Lots of construction on the turnpike between Valley Forge and Morgantown right now. The work is being done at night, but delays can still occur during the day. Another reason to consider the route I suggested.
