We don't have any recruits participating but still a great tournament. At least got some Sem guys to pull for; and Spencer Lee has moved up and is wrestling at 126. Not sure if anyone can hang with him but it is a deep weight class and this is the highest he has ever wrestled.

No recruits? No FULL COURT PRESS ON CARR?

Seriously, might not be recruiting yet, but everyone's watching Beau Bartlett, the #1 freshman in the nation who's also in-state.

Interesting that Singletary only weighed 206. Thought he'd be bigger by now.

Spencer Lee looked human. Only 5-0. Silva has been on fire this year. Just knocked off Decatur.

Smaller Decatur is going to be a good get for tOSU. Thought at first he might be a Nick Skonieczny. Not the case.

I would say David Carr looked more "human" today than Spencer did. Madrigal was a game opponent for Lee. Respect

I didnt take it as a slight Mr Pie. Im sure a 5-0 score is unacceptable to Spencer aswell. I was just pointing out that Madrigal came to win today and i was as impressed as hell with a guy that didnt manage to score a point. He had terrific hand fighting, got in on Spencer a couple times and kept fighting to get out from bottom. Madrigal will be a good college wrestler.

Carr's semi against Ramirez was crazy. He got put to his back a couple times and comes back and wins in the end. Can't wait to see Spencer take on Silva. That should be a great match. Silva is tough.

Ramirez is the real deal he was taking it to yianni at the world team camp this summer

Based on Spencer's body language after the match, he did not seem pleased. The young man certainly has his expectations of dominance. I guarantee he was frustrated he couldn't get a turn.

138: Moises Guillen, PerrysburgCole Matthews, Reynolds, 7-5 OT

I'm shocked that the one recruit (Carr) that will either make or break PSU wrestling for the next 4 to 5 years took a loss to high school kid.

A little background filler here. Hovis is from Poway HS which is just north of San Diego. I lived there for 30 years and I've seen the quality of wrestlers that Wayne Branstetter produces in his program. Poway is usually just a little bit behind Clovis in the state tournament, and everyone here knows the kind of teams they have.

My point is that Carr did not lose to an average opponent. Branstetter has guys who are very good and they tend to stay with basic fundamental technique. I don't ever recall seeing a Poway wrestler try a head and arm throw or a cement mixer. You can bet they will be right on Clovis' tail at the end of the season.

Yeah, my post wasn't a slight against Hovis. Thanks for the info. I was digging for more info on the kid even before he beat Carr. There were a few talking about him over on HR so I was curious. Anway, just pointing out that it could very well be that Carr isn't a "full court press" type of recruit in Caels opinion. He's very very good but maybe, just maybe we could survive without him.

Well, I'll say that Spencer Lee is plenty big. All those concerns were just silly. Bigger than Jack Mueller ever was in HS and Mueller is killing people as a true freshman. His cut to 110 was probably brutal.

Silva has been awesome this year. Lee wins 7-3.

Agreed. In Carr's favor, he handled his loss with class. Cohlton Schultz should learn how to do that. Fortunately, Gable Steveson will give him plenty of opportunities to learn in college.

Here's a link to Schultz being his usual punk self in the final against Singletary:

I can't remember the last time Lee was taken down in a hs match. That was a tough bracket and was nice to see these kids came in primed to try to beat him. Congrats to Spencer. Making PA proud!

Yeah, don't care for that at all. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if he's placed on the "do not recruit" list by Cael and coaches that place a high priority on character and the way one will represent their university. Iowa fans love him. They can have him...

Btw, I said it months ago and I'll say it again, I'd take Nick Lee or Berge any day over Carr. I think once again Cael will eventually be exonerated from the wrath that is spyker when all is said and done.
FWIW I dont think it's either or unless both bump up over time. 141/149 right now while Carr will be 157.

If we are all adopting an uncommitted athlete, in spyker fashion, who is within reasonable driving distance... give me KURT McHENRY. FULL COURT PRESS!!! Beast of the East, Escape the Rock, Powerade. Watch this dude.

He looks like he's got a great set up to be recruited by Oklahoma State (pure speculation)

He lost to an average official?

Never heard of The Brothers Tagg before today (Gabe wasn't even ranked at 113) but both walked away with Ironman titles. Brecksville is within driving distance, though closer to Columbus. Should be interesting.

Finals Results

106: #15 Julian Tagg, Brecksville dec. #12 Lucas Byrd, LaSalle, 7-5 OT

113: Gabe Tagg, Brecksville fall. #15 Jesse Vasquez, St. John Bosco 4:00

How about those brothers out of Illinois; Dack Punke (120) and Jace Punke (220).

Indeed, with the caveat that he continue to grow. He wrestled 44kg (97 lbs) this past summer. That's tiny for a kid entering his sophomore year. Who knows if he even has to cut to make 106?

Let's hope he wrestles at least 113 and 120 his junior and senior seasons. Maybe he gets hold of the same Ent-draught as Zahid Valencia and skips five weight classes his senior year. ;)

Hovis just moved to Poway this summer from AZ to wrestle there so he hasn't had much time in the room under Brandstetter. Interesting 2 kids that grew up training in AZ and just recently moved out won ironman titles (Bartlett being the other). I would bet that Poway will be a distant 3rd around 125 points to Clovis who will be a distant 2nd around 175 points to Buchanan at 225 points dominating again this year.

Thanks for the clarification. I was wondering about how Hovis did last year because I didn't remember him. Poway put a guy into the state finals last year and I'm pretty sure he lost to one of the Nevills brothers.

Maybe Penn State will have some interest in Hovis. I'd really like to see one of Branstetters guys in B&W. He runs a pretty tight ship that goes beyond what you see on the mat. His guys would fit in really well with Cael's values.

BTW, the front page article on Intermat has a real good photo of Hovis with Branstetter standing in the corner.
