2016 Walsh Ironman

I don't now if I said it on here or on The G, but Cohlton Schultz has been a tool. Anyone who wears a t-shirt with their own picture on it in HS is a tool. Having heard/seen him interact with people outside of Flo video, he's not a guy I want to see in Navy & White.

He played the part in the finals. Lots of head slaps and a shove from way out of bounds that sent his opponent into the seats. My first impression was not a positive one.

Sad but Spyker is almost ignore worthy. I have never seen someone post so much with so little information. It would be a 1st for me to put someone on ignore simply because of the annoying factor. His only saving grace is he takes his lumps in stride and IS STILL VERY POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm thinking since it's pretty much spykers call on who we press, it's probably his call on when and how often. Caels just along for the ride when it comes to recruiting.

That first sentence might be the funniest thing I have read in awhile. Well done sir!

Hovis is a 3x AZ state champion who has been coached for the last several years by Eric Larkin at Thorobred wrestling club and Seton Catholic. Larkin left Seton this year and the Hovis family moved to Poway.

Btw, I said it months ago and I'll say it again, I'd take Nick Lee or Berge any day over Carr. I think once again Cael will eventually be exonerated from the wrath that is spyker when all is said and done.
Carr was not on his game all day yesterday. Put on his back in 3 straight matches. Was able to pull it out in the first 2 but not the last match.

I'm shocked that the one recruit (Carr) that will either make or break PSU wrestling for the next 4 to 5 years took a loss to high school kid.

A little background filler here. Hovis is from Poway HS which is just north of San Diego. I lived there for 30 years and I've seen the quality of wrestlers that Wayne Branstetter produces in his program. Poway is usually just a little bit behind Clovis in the state tournament, and everyone here knows the kind of teams they have.

My point is that Carr did not lose to an average opponent. Branstetter has guys who are very good and they tend to stay with basic fundamental technique. I don't ever recall seeing a Poway wrestler try a head and arm throw or a cement mixer. You can bet they will be right on Clovis' tail at the end of the season.

So tonight I met with a wrestling ref that does college and high school, and a number of the elite high school tournaments. I asked what he had done lately. He mentioned a few and then said he'd done Ironman this weekend. My reply was to ask who impressed him the most at Ironman. He thought for a short bit, and then said "Hovis, from Poway." We chatted a bit more, and I found that he reffed the Hovis - Carr final.

Carr was not on his game all day yesterday. Put on his back in 3 straight matches. Was able to pull it out in the first 2 but not the last match.

He looked gassed early (taking injury time) in some matches that he gutted out. I would not be surprised if he was under the weather.

I told him (the ref) that Hovis had gotten a lot of discussion over the weekend as a result of his win over Carr. I also mentioned that there were some suggestions and/or guesses that Carr was sick. He said that anything is possible, but that Carr looked fine to him in the final.

I can't remember the last time Lee was taken down in a hs match.

The ref saw Lee's match, but did not ref it. He said it was pretty obvious that Spencer was ticked after the match -- probably because he had given up the TD. He went on to say that right after the match Spencer was doing wind sprints. He felt that (being annoyed at less than perfection, and then taking it out in a workout) were part of what makes Spencer so special. I opined that perhaps it was Spencer adopting the Iowa technique. (During the PSU - Iowa dual at Rec Hall in 2012, I saw several of the Iowa guys running wind sprints in the hallway after their matches. I asked someone from Iowa about it (not sure if he was a trainer, or what), and he indicated that it was part of their cool-down procedure after a match.)
