2018 Recruiting Thread

The track and field results I found for Jahan Dotson aren't like Journey Brown for pure speed. He did have a light's out long jump. He is quick as a cat though, which I think is more valuable for football. As he hits the weight room, I actually think he will become faster with some added weight.

Saban feels the same, isn't brimming over with enthusiasm about the early signing period.
Well of course. It removes a huge advantage for the top 5-10 recruiting programs.

To state the obvious, until now Meyer and Saban (and a few others) could target the best and brightest and hold out on a bunch of undecideds knowing they could cherry-pick other top players if a reserved spot were to open up. This had to happen once it became too obvious kids were just committing to reserve spots. It got out of control.

Now it's more of a gamble for these programs. Shouldn't hurt them or the players as much as it removes an advantage in stockpiling top talent and reduces the downside risk for other programs.

Asked if we're done recruiting, James said, "We'll have some more action in the next day or so. And we'll have some more action in the second signing day. There's still some moving parts out there."

It is true. OSU missed out on Carmen. If we land Walker, OSU has a smaller pool of OTs they go after. The early signing period is bad for schools like OSU and Alabama which is why they hate it. But good for everyone else.

Untrue. They just flipped one in their backyard. Perhaps now they can't chase other, higher regarded, prospects and attempt to sway them late in the process while stringing a kid along.

Recent history shows you just need a top 5 class to compete for a national championship. Who cares where you rank in the top 5. Top 5 means you have an elite class. Have we ever had a top 5 class?

Hate to say it Judge but Rivals bias has made their rankings absolutely useless. #FakeRankings. 247 is the only real rankings that matter.

Bad because they can't just recruit the high rated kids, wait for them to make the usual January decision, and then fill in the gaps with kids they felt were plan B? How many very good kids get turned away because a great prospect wants to commit late?

6 weeks isn't a huge difference particularly when these kids have been recruited since they were 10th graders. Any complaints are sour grapes over losing certain prospects.

Difference in recruiting philosophy. Franklin loves the early signing day. Meyer hates it, he can't offer kids at the last minute and flip them.

  • Meyer has had to tell players that he wasn't sure if he had a scholarship for them yet because he doesn't know which players will leave for the NFL yet. As a result, some players have held to tell Meyer that they are signing with other schools because those schools told those prospects they would pull their offers if they didn't sign.
  • The positive of the Early Signing Period is that the coaches don't have to continue "babysitting" recruits who are already committed; they're signed now. The negative is that it rushes the process.
  • On landing late-developing Ohio kids late in the recruiting process in the past: "Those kids won't be available. They're signed."
  • "You're squeezing a recruiting process into a small time frame."
  • Meyer was "dead-set against" the Early Signing Period
I can kinda see his first point. We'll be running into that some ourselves over the next couple of years, I think.

Above is quotes from Urban Meyer bemoaning the fact that the new rules make it harder for him to flip kids late from schools they have been committed to. So here is an Ohio State fan attacking kids who flipped from his favorite school.

"These kids have nothing vested in these schools until they sign and arrive on campus. Being "committed" has no currency for some of these kids. I'm almost embarrassed for them. I'm equally embarrassed for the parents of kids that allow for these circuses to unfold around such an important decision. Is it any wonder that so many of these kids can't transition from the sport when their playing days are over? When in their lives have these kids ever made good decisions? All things held moderately equal, character trumps these divas that want out."

And what was this numb-nuts saying in 2012 when Reeves, Schutt, Williams and O'Connor flipped from PSU to O$U? I'm sure then it was a "good decision" and they all had "character" and definitely were not "divas"!? I'm sure he also wasn't embarrassed for their parents.

Sounds like someone feels spurned and can't understand why in the world someone would not want to play at THEE Ohio State University.
