2018 Recruiting Thread

Why have a discussion about it? Nothing we do or say is going to affect anything, and our opinions are all likely to be very wrong. Let the kids alone.

Nothing we do or say here has an effect on anything regarding PSU football. No use having a message board on PSU football according to your logic.

Just like any topic, those that are not interested can choose not to participate.....

Yeah, but wouldn't we be really set if had a 4 star kid from say Detroit that runs a sub 4.4 40 and averaged almost 15 ypc already on the roster? Better yet, we could really get nuts and look at that kid that ran for over 7k yards in the WPIAL. Damn, if only we had those kind of options.:(

Are you talking about the kid that had 11 TD's and 700+ yards is one game? Remember, CJF had him promise that he would do the same at PSU during the 2017 class signing day......

Respectfully, I'd like to continue the 85 scholarship vs availabity of spots opening up discussion. I think this thread is the right place for that discussion. It's intriguing bc as it stands right now, PSU is "over" 85, and (other than SQB and Andre Robinson) there only a very small number of players who are either foreseeable transfers or would be major surprises/shockers/losses if they were to leave.

i find it intriguing bc the PSU media has not really taken a deep dive into the numbers. Even when certain podcasts and articles discuss it, they just say, basically, "welp, it looks like more guys are going to leave."

But there is no academic discussion or what-if-more don't. Just my opinion.
It’s a free country, but this is the 2018 Recruiting thread, not the 885 man scholarship thread...

Frankly, I'm not inclined to write that a kid who came to PSU full of enthusiasm and bright hopes, who did everything he was asked to to, was a good student, teammate, and citizen should be one who is asked to move on. I find any discussion thereof distasteful.

I'm well aware of the realities of college football. Coach Franklin will do what he has to do, presumably in a process that is absent any rancor. I don't think that having a bunch of jammering mimis in the background does anything to help that process.

This the morning after Christmas in the James Franklin house, and the coach has just discovered he has 27 LOIs under the tree and Fax machine ready to accept a few more. The roster for the New Year's party has 90+ names and there is only enough food and drink for 85.
That's apparently the view of the situation for some on this board. But the truth is Coach Franklin and his staff have known for quite some time exactly how the numbers will work out for every situation they may encounter and what the depth chart will look like.
It is fun for all of us to speculate on the future, but silly to think this staff has not had an exact plan in place for weeks.
Merry Christmas to all !!!

totally agree - the staff would not be giving out offers to players without a plan going forward. most schools it comes down to four types of players who tend to move on (either mutually or not)

  1. players who walked on an had a one year deal but have marginal playing time. these usually go first. they dont lose being on the team, just the scholie which was a bonus anyhow.
  2. players who would be in their 5th year and have limited playing time. these become the next group. these players should also have a degree.
  3. players in their 4th year with 2 yrs available but have limited playing time and the outlook is not solid for them.
  4. players who just move on due to their own reasons. the staff likely knew these players long ago.
we potentially have a large number of players in these groups. Urban Meyer actually says that unless a player is seeing regular PT by his 3rd year, it is unlikely they will ever make an impact at tOSU. those players move on for personal or medical reasons.

what is your view of the remaining target players?

first I think we are all assuming PSU adds a few players in this class. we have heard possible Oweh, Walker and Enis as targets. any others you consider realistic targets?

Players in good standing, who simply are buried on the depth chart, get a great deal of help from staff finding a new home where they can play.

I don't think we have many in the 1st two categories.

I'm suspicious of the OSU (or any) players who simply decide to move on. Why would they leave and go somewhere where they have to pay to finish their degree.

what is your view of the remaining target players?

OT and DE are what I see as needs. And that is what CJF said this past Wednesday. With the 21 signed, to me this is all bonus talent between now and the first Wednesday in February....

I think its one matter to speculate who, on the current roster, is leaving. Its another matter to be concerned about the total # of scholarships.....as I think James has that figured out.
I have no issues with people discussing scholarship limits but why muddy up the recruiting thread? I post questions about home improvement from time to time, but I do it in separate threads.

I know its unlikely, but I'd love to be surprised with Friday. I'll be stunned if Oweh and Enis are not already in the fold. Walker, I believe, should be ours. I look for him to be awarded a 5th star. I think Smith is a Buckeye.

So is it speculating to much to think that since Franklin said that they were trying Parsons out at Linebacker that one of the other D-Line prospects has already signed??

Totally speculation, but I think he is looking for a place to go and see playing time. Barkley beat him from the start, and Sanders proved to be the #2 when he wasn't fumbling.

IMHO Robinson is a really good RB. Unfortunately he’s not a good fit for the RPO. I hope and pray the kid gets the opportunity to play in a single set back offense. Think he’s good for 1000 yards if he finds the playing time. Reminds me of Notre Dame’s RB Adams.

Penn State may be in position to add another premier defensive prospect Jan. 4, when 4-star linemen Jayson Oweh plans to announce his commitment during the Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando, Fla.

Land of 10 will be live at the event, and I’m leaning toward the Nittany Lions ending up with Oweh. The 6-5, 235-pound Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.) standout secured 13 sacks in fewer than 5 full games this season.

Andrew Lind from 11W doubling down on Oweh. I'm still optimistic on our chances.

Oweh tossed around the idea of faxing in his National Letter of Intent during the Early Signing Period and then announce his college decision during the Under Armour All-America Game on Jan. 4, but sources close to him told Eleven Warriors that did not happen. I still remain confident Ohio State will land him and fellow four-star defensive end Tyreke Smith one week from Thursday.

Additionally, Oweh conducted an extensive interview with Chat Sports on Saturday. While he doesn't admit to leaning one way or the other, he talks about the factors that will go into his decision, including early playing time, comfort with the staff and player development — all of which favor the Buckeyes.

I believe we actually do sir.

That would put us at the max of 25 if we are that fortunate.
Put's them at 25 and also 91 players on scholarship. Signing 4 more is easy, eliminating 6 more players to get to down to 85 is the issue. But I'm sure JF and company know exactly what they are doing.

Bc it sounds like rooting for certain players to leave. Not a great look.

I don't think anyone is rooting for certain players to leave. Just speculating on how to make the numbers work.

I'm sure that the staff has it figured out but I'd hate to see kids pushed out instead of finishing their degrees. I'm curious about the legal workarounds.

Frank and honest conversations about what the player wants. "Do you want playing time? It won't be here, but you can stay and be a back up. If you want to leave, here are places I have friends who have openings at your position." Something like that.

Either way, wrong thread and I still feel like it's rooting for certain players to leave.
