2018 Recruiting Thread

Owen just playing people, he signed i bet. You have that Phil news talking about Enis, Smith, and Walker still with things to be decided, visits etc. Reading the tea leaves. Also, prior to early signing many believed Oweh would sign then and announce later. Urban freaking out now going all in on Smith to save face. Owen and Enis are basic locks, Walker Smith 50/50, Friday fall back but may not wait around as he can go to Michigan if he wants. Though interesting Friday waited to sign now until Feb.
I wish I was as optimistic as you. Remember when it was a “lock” that Christian Wilkins was coming here?

If there are 4 EEs, could take up to 29. Problem is what does that impact on the current roster to get to 85. So speculate away on how many to sign.
We don't know who else might leave. We are probably over the 85 right now. I believe we are at 88 with Butts coming later and Barkley leaving.

With Robinson & Barbir transferring PSU is down to 67 scholarship players eligible to return. Barkley would make that 66. That means 19 new scholarships + 1 for each additional departure. We're currently at 22.

I'll go out on a limb and say we lose enough to take 25 and over the summer lose at least 1 to give a walk on a scholarship

Honestly, if you don’t think Franklin isn’t accounting for these things...

Just relax and enjoy the new commitments.

Who are they?

Players entering their 5th year. The only ones that have not played much are the RB's:

7 Koa Farmer LB SR/JR 6-1/237 Lake View Terrace, Calif./Notre Dame
9 Trace McSorley QB SR/JR 6-0/195 Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods
4 Nick Scott S SR/JR 5-11/199 Fairfax, Va./Fairfax
8 Mark Allen RB SR/JR 5-6/180 Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha Catholic
77 Chasz Wright OL SR/JR 6-7/358 Woodbridge, Va./Milford Academy
19 Torrence Brown DE SR/JR 6-3/257 Tuscaloosa, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy
21 Amani Oruwariye CB SR/JR 6-1/209 Tampa, Fla./Gaither
20 Johnathan Thomas RB SR/JR 5-11/216 Peabody, Mass./St. John's Prep
3 DeAndre Thompkins WR SR/JR 5-11/187 Hubert, N.C./Swansboro

True Juniors, other than SB and Reid:
33 Jake Cooper LB JR/JR 6-1/234 Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood
43 Manny Bowen LB JR/JR 6-1/226 Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat

I see it as that the reasons for transfer are not always playing time or talent, and that there may be underclassmen that may choose to move on. It will play out, and out of respect for the team the personal reasons are just that, personal. And CJF is just the type of player's coach to keep it personal when it should be....

I would guess; Allen, Thomas, Wright and Brown. Maybe Allen stays if Bowen is gone

Andre Robinson leaving is a bit of a head-scratcher.

Why? The hand writing is on the wall. AR is in his 3rd year and getting very limited carries. Sanders will be the man next year. And although he may get more breaks than SB did, there will be great competition for those 2nd and 3rd team carries. Journey Brown. Rickey Slade.

I also believe a power back like AR is better suited to a more traditional offense where he lines up deep and takes the handoff with momentum towards the LOS. AR likely believes that as well.

If Allen leaves that only leaves Sanders, Brown, and Slade. But CJF may bring in a walk-on for insurance, and Parsons is also known to be a pretty competent running back if the team gets in a pinch ...........

RB's get hurt all of the time. One play from being a major contributor to a possible playoff team.

Penn State Implements New ‘Lion’ Position For Tommy Stevens

BY ETHAN KASALES ON DECEMBER 15, 2017 AT 3:28 PM

Penn State’s Fiesta Bowl depth chart featured a new position for backup quarterback Tommy Stevens, who is now the starting “Lion.”

Upon being promoted to offensive coordinator, Ricky Rahne felt it was important to create a title that reflects Stevens’ multifaceted role for the Nittany Lions.

“It’s just one of those things that’s recognizing his unique ability to affect a football game. It’s an awesome opportunity for me to be able to use somebody with his type of talents,” Rahne said Friday.

“We’ve got to be creative in ways to get him the ball, but also make sure he’s always in a position to succeed,” he continued.

James Franklin said Stevens has even brought up the possibility of playing a little defense and special teams in the future.

“I thought it made sense to list him on here as a starter because that’s how we view him, that’s how his teammates view him,” Franklin said.

“There’s really nothing off the table in terms of his opportunity to have a bigger role on our team.”

Rahne called Stevens a natural route-runner during Penn State’s bowl media day, saying he picked up receiving concepts quickly this season. He’s racked up 11 career touchdowns.

Everything’s very natural to him,” Rahne said. “I bet he’s really good at pool. I bet he’s really good at darts. I’m sure if I put him on a golf course he’s probably going to drive the ball 315 yards right down the center with a baseball grip. That’s pretty rare, especially in today’s age of people specializing.”

Starting quarterback Trace McSorley expressed his excitement for Stevens, who put together his most complete performance to date in the regular-season finale against Maryland. The redshirt sophomore from Indianapolis scored four touchdowns and rushed for a career-high 113 yards.

I think that’s awesome now that we’ve got a whole new position for Tommy,” McSorley said.

The type of problems he can create for a defense is different than really any other player on the field.”

McSorley is a near lock to return for his final season in State College, meaning Stevens will likely serve as his backup for a third consecutive year. Stevens is scheduled to graduate in the spring with two years of eligibility remaining, but the news of his ever-expanding role may quell any talk of a transfer.

Barring a roster shakeup, Stevens would conceivably take over the starting quarterback job as a senior in 2019. Until then, the Nittany Lions will continue to utilize their 6-foot-5 jumbo athlete in a variety of ways.

Chris Petersen’s Washington Huskies have no doubt already spent time breaking down film of Stevens, but it’s anyone’s guess where he’ll line up throughout the game in Glendale on Dec. 30.

why? he obviously has talent. while not sb, he's a pretty productive rb when given the ball. if he has any aspirations of playing beyond college, he has to get a situation that allows him to show his abilities. that wouldn't happen at ps.

You really think he has post-college potential? It's about playing time for him.

All the twitter posts are cryptic. Like any top recruit is going to decide where to go to College and play football based off how many of a certain teams fans follow him on Twitter..

Urban legend has it that Curtis Dickey - Texas A&M was going to sign with Texas. Students were singing Eyes Of Texas
and he walks up to the stage and says he's going to A&M. Kids.

Respectfully, I'd like to continue the 85 scholarship vs availabity of spots opening up discussion. I think this thread is the right place for that discussion. It's intriguing bc as it stands right now, PSU is "over" 85, and (other than SQB and Andre Robinson) there only a very small number of players who are either foreseeable transfers or would be major surprises/shockers/losses if they were to leave.

i find it intriguing bc the PSU media has not really taken a deep dive into the numbers. Even when certain podcasts and articles discuss it, they just say, basically, "welp, it looks like more guys are going to leave."

But there is no academic discussion or what-if-more don't. Just my opinion.

What's to discuss? Some players currently on the scholarship roster won't be next year, whether of their own volition or through encouragement by the coaching staff. Doubt that anyone here has any definitive insight as to who or how, aside from those already disclosed.
