2018 Recruiting Thread

Here is a list from 2006-2015 MNC winners with their recruiting rankings for the previous 4 years. With one exception (Auburn had Cam Newton) There has not been a team win the MNC with less than a top 8 class average over the previous 4 years in awhile...

Looking at our defensive liabilites next season, I expect especially BIG teams to try to run between the tackles. So I would be willing to bet we will play less nickel as a result. And the other problem is that with nickel, you still need two box LB’s.
I respectfully disagree we need the same number of scholarship DE’s as LB’s. LB positions generally require more development time.

Think it’s more likely they’ll use TE’s. Pass coverage kills young LBs.

Understand your thoughts. LB development seems to be both physical and learning the assignments, and good LB play usually takes a couple of years in a college system. The DE development required to be an effective DE is sometimes underestimated. Simmons is in his 2nd year, was a solid 4 star DE recruit, but in no way could start or be a big contributor to a MNC defense. DE development is more physical, but I believe takes pretty much an equal amount of time as that for LB's. It's just that with DE's they usually get on the field sooner due to the fact that most teams substitute DE's more to keep DE's fresh and able to generate a pass rush. But I believe a great defense would have 4 quality DE's rotating, and PSU has a ways to go in assembling a top DE depth chart.

Regarding DT's, we have had mostly average talent at DT that required time to develop, but players like Hansard and Mustopher, top DT recruits, may surprise us in how effective they can be in their redshirt freshman seasons. We'll see the next few years.

i just see the middle of our defense as the place teams will try to attack us next season. We lose 3 DT’s. I think the talent we have on the roster and coming in at DT will prove to be superior to the players we are losing, but it might take some time for that talent to reach its potential.
Losing Cabinda, Smith and Bowen is going to hurt. We have bodies but little experience to replace their contributions. MLB is going to be the main problem. For the sake of continuity, JF and Pry might decide to keep Farmer and Brown where they are as starters. I just hope Brooks and the incoming freshmen are as good as advertised.
I guess the real problem is that its very hard to make up for previous recruiting shortfalls at ILB and DT in one year.

Brown and Farmer are purely outside backers, they can't play the middle. Its Parsons, Brooks or sink at this point.

The only discrepancies i see here is how many times has Alabama played Georgia in those years, sort of reminds me of Wisconsin with a national advantage.
Then there are the teams like Iowa,Washington, etc. who kill it with 3 stars.

GLOV -- the Isheem Young to State Penn is classic; sad outcome, but good quick summary

others:
Marcellus Earlington -- will play college basketball, instead of football
K.J. Henry -- Clemson
Brian Asamoah -- Oklahoma
Eyabi Anomah -- Alabama

High correlation to top 10 and really top 5 average classes. Sorry pitt and other dreamers......
In 09 Bamas seniors and jr's were top 15. I think Clemson avg was 12 or 13 for last years championship. It can be done as long as you're around 10

I guess the real problem is that its very hard to make up for previous recruiting shortfalls at ILB and DT in one year.

Givens and Windsor each have 2 years of experience. They are ready. They're not 1st rounders. But, they will be better than the tandem of
Cothren and Cothran. I think you'll see Jordan backing them up. He's got some experience and was a highly regarded recruit. Buchholz will
slide inside on passing downs when guys like; Simmons, Gross-Matos and Toney come in to help S. Miller get after the qb. Our DL will be better.

Cabinda and Smith at MLB are the losses we don't know how things will shake out. Honestly, what did we get out of Manny Bowen this year? I'm guessing
Cam Brown is more productive next year than Bowen was this year. No way to know now or even in the spring about MLB. But, Parsons and Brooks will probably fight
it out for Cabinda's spot. One of the best athletes in the country and Brooks was a 4* recruit. We're replacing kids whom are great kids and we should
be thankful they came to PSU to carry on our traditions(Good football and equally good school work), they are being replaced by higher ranked recruits that
we have been able to recruit post-sanctions and because of Franklin's tenacity on the recruiting trail. Good times are here. And, it's gonna get better.

Now, approximately a week before both announce, it’s become clear Oweh is the better bet.

This 6-5, 235-pound New Jersey prospect has visited Penn State more than any other school and seems to fit in the 2018 “family,” whose members have pursued him with regularity. Oweh, who recorded 13 sacks in less than five full games this fall at Blair Academy, is my pick to become the next promising defender to join Brent Pry’s attack.

The choice is down to Ohio State and Penn State for Oweh. It’s long seemed the same for Smith, though he continues to list Alabama, Oregon and USC as fellow finalists.

As Dave alludes to in his question, Walker may be heading down a similar path. Franklin and Nittany Lions offensive recruiting coordinator Josh Gattis both shared their desire to add another tackle. Penn State presently carries three signees along the offensive front: Nana Asiedu, Bryce Effner and Fredrick Scruggs.

The addition of Walker would provide Penn State with a pair of top-10 tackle prospects, creating that tandem with Asiedu. However, despite a strong recruitment and multiple successful visits with the North Point (Waldorf, Md.) High School senior, the Nittany Lions can expect a serious battle for his signature.

Walker, a 6-6, 300-pound U.S. Army All-American, still shows interest in Maryland and Virginia Tech, but again it’s Ohio State that likely presents Penn State’s largest obstacle.

The Buckeyes were spurned by elite in-state lineman Jackson Carman on Dec. 20, representing a rare miss for Urban Meyer on home turf. The nation’s top-ranked tackle chose Clemson, leaving Ohio State searching for prospects with increased urgency. I’m still searching for clarity while attempting to read Walker’s recruitment process.

I’ve projected him to sign with Penn State since last offseason and tend to think that remains the case, but the margin of conviction here is slight. Going toe-to-toe consistently on the recruiting trail vs. Ohio State, and picking up key wins against a respected closer like Meyer, is a positive sign for Penn State.

I recall reading Castgana got a scholarship.
I wouldn’t count Parsons as an LB or DE at this point. Before his career at PSU is over, he may well play both positions.
That’s why I had the scholarship numbers at rhe two positions as equal.
I am a lot more optimistic about our DE position next year and the year after than LB.
