2019 Phillies thread

There was a prior article on the same subject at csn philly, looking at the 40 year history of unsuccessfully drafting pitchers.
It showed Ricky Bottalico as the 10th best home grown pitcher during that period— that in and of itself is a remarkable statement— talked about drafting 1,000 or so pitchers over that time framework— and that insanely, miserable return.
I conservatively estimated that based on 10 scouts and the amount of time they got paid, it cost some ungodly amount of scouting salary to draft one good pitcher. Mind boggling.
I suggested to some other Phillies fans that we could buy a baseball draft guide for $25, and we would run the draft for the Phillies.
The level of ineptness in successfully drafting pitchers is possibly the most amazing thing I have ever seen in sports.
I guess that is one major reason why my baseball team is the lossingest franchise in sports. With all that incompetence, they are still my team. How nuts am I. Please don’t answer that.

10th inning: Quinn doubles for the Phils with 1 out. And then, they show they can execute anything, as Kingery grounds to short, and Williams grounds to 2nd

Pirates' Frazier gets a double to lead off the bottom of the inning, then Newman executes a perfect bunt to get the runner to 3rd with 1 out. Suarez gets Reynolds with a K, so Marte to the plate with 2 out. Suarez gets out of it by going 0-2 to Marte, then getting him to ground to 3rd, where Franco makes a nice place to get the 3rd out

Game 3 of Phils - Pirates series. Tied 1-1 in the 9th. Phils don't score in the top of the 9th. They surprised me as they brought in Neris to pitch the bottom of the 9th. And of course, he starts the inning off by hitting Marte. smh

Edit, then with 1st & 3rd and 2 outs, Neris hits Moran, to load the bases. Diaz battled Neris, but ended up lining out sharply to LF, to end the inning.
Hoskins homer in 11th, 2-1, bottom of 11th 2 out Suarez pitching. Phils win, sounds like a lot of Phils fans in Pittsburgh.

Ranger Suarez goes 1-2-3 for the Phils in the bottom of the 11th, so the Phils win the game, 2-1, and the series, 2-1. Been decades since the Phils won two consecutive series against the Buccos. All credit to @Victor E. Bell for the win, as he was in the stands for the game.

Also, a shout-out to Drew Smyly, who made his 1st start for the Phils. He went 6 innings, had 8 Ks, gave up 4 hits, 2 walks, and 1 run. At least today, my concern about his propensity to give up HRs since coming back from TJ surgery was a non-issue.

OMG - Please send help!

I’m obviously still delirious after two days of golf in 99* temp / 98% humidity.....I think I just saw that the Phillies’ bullpen pitched F I V E scoreless innings.....today!

FIVE SCORELESS INNINGS OUT OF FIVE TOTAL INNINGS PITCHED! OMG!

Just got back. Hot and swampy both games. Pitching was good today (Neris struggled but managed to get out of his inning.) Last night not so good but three hits last night . A little better today. Good to see Quinn get a gap double in a PH appearance today but we had to wait for Hoskins to seal it.

Almost a full house last night. Not so much today but still a very nice crowd. Fun weekend and a split (the games I was at), which saved it from just being a muggy mess altogether.

Buc fans really got on Harper. Boos, "overrated", lots of jeers. Don't quite understand them getting on him so much. He was really jacked over a few ball-strike calls today. He came into the series a little hotter than he had been doing. Did nothing last night, GIDP and struck out. Two strikeouts today but led off with a hustle double, walked and scored. Was he ever in the running to be a Buc? Some young hipster from Tampa was in for a wedding... at a bar last night was giving me a bag of shiz about all the money the Philly teams are paying athletes in all sports. Dude, I'm sitting here sipping an overpriced cheap beer. What the hell do I know about the finances of these clubs? Flyers, Sixers, etc. Harper. Wentz. They bitch when you go cheap, and they bitch when you spend money. Might as well spend money. Everybody else I met was cool.

Almost forgot...a weird "fan on the field" incident today. B. Miller is up for the Phils, right after Hoskins got HBP. I looked toward the home plate circle and here comes some random guy in jeans and a Hawaiian shirt wandering, almost meandering from the area around the Bucs dugout toward the plate. The ump turned around and put his arms out like what the hell are you doing? Then he goes over to Miller and tried to give him a fist bump or a handshake, Miller avoids him. The whole time this kid's got his phone in front of his face like he's recording his act for posterity. Finally three or four cops hooked him up in front of the Phillies dugout and he was off to the magistrate, I imagine. He was in no hurry and made it pretty far toward the players on the field before somebody reeled his stupid ass in. One surmises in Philly he would have been doing the "Electric Slide."

That guy should be fined $500 for being on the field, and 3 days in jail for that shirt and pants.

IIRC, the security in Philly caught a bit of flack for using a taser on the moron who could have been a threat to the players. OTOH, in Pittsburgh any random ass fan can walk up to a player at home plate and try to shake his hand. Security says, "Hey, when you're finished there meet us at the visitor's dugout so we can gently handcuff you."

To be fair he didn't resist/run, so the use of force was proper ( none ) but who knows what is going on with somebody nutty enough to do this. I always think in cases like this he has two buddies who say hey, you don't have a hair on your ass to walk out on that field and the guy says "Yeah? Watch this..." That's bad but what if somebody strolled out to hurt somebody? He could have gutted three people. Yes, one has a bat but it's Miller so he may not be a threat to hit anything.

I kid, I kid.

Some videos of the guy.

Cole Hamels made the All-Star team 3 times as a Phillie: 2007, 2011, and 2012.
Brian - I’m a believer in admitting a mistake. My post was incorrect in that Hamels did make 3 all-star teams as a Phillie and, in fact, he made the team in 2016, according to MLB stats, so he has 4 appearances.

I do stand by my comment that the organization is truly awful in developing pitching. The last great one was Robin Roberts.

Ferguson Jenkins is more recent. Alas, GM John Quinn thought they Phils were really close to a pennant, but short on arms, so he traded Jenkins, Adolfo Phillips, and John Hernstein to the Cubs for Larry Jackson and Bob Buhl at the start of the 1966 season. Jenkins went on to win 20 or more games in 6 of the next 8 seasons. I still get angry just thinking about that trade.

Your broader point is correct. While the Phils have changed ownership since the Whiz Kids era, gone through quite a few GMs, and an ever larger number of minor league directors, they have been surprisingly inept at developing pitching.

I want Greinke as he won't cost their already thin farm system much of anything. He gives them a legit #2 behind Nola and can help them for 2 more years. Getting Boyd too would be spectacular.

No need to save money for Trout, so go get some arms.

Yep. Go get Greinke. Hell, of it means giving up less in prospects, cover his full salary instead of letting Arizona foot some of the bill. That gives you a GREAT top of the rotation for a few years

I don't get the love for Boyd. Been good for 2 months. Career ERA of 4.87. Yes, he is under control for a couple of years. But the Tigers want a big haul. Sounds like selling high to me...

I agree, and have been equally puzzled. I guess it's a combo of knowing the Phils need arms, and writers analyzing who might be available, and also placing an emphasis on pitchers that are under contract (i.e., can be controlled, and plan budgets around).

I get the Phillies being involved. But sounds like the Tigers want a ton (good negotiating). But can't give up many top prospects here. Comparing this to Quintana and White Sox getting Eloy Jiminez.

Big contract to take for Greinke. Maybe worth the risk if they are willing to eat the money. Lots of innings on a 35 year old pitcher that is now throwing 89 mph fastballs

True, but Glavine and Moyer were able to make that speed work for a number years. Given his career, I think it’s a chance worth taking

I get it that they give up less to take on contract. Not many great options out there. And can't afford to trade whatever prospects they have left.

Top of the 6th, the Phils get 2nd & 3rd with no outs. Hernandez then pops out to short right (nice play by the 1st baseman), Franco gets intentionally walked, Haseley gets jammed and pops out to 3rd, and then Quinn takes a perfect changeup for strike 1, and then pops out to the right side to end the inning.

The Tigers then hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, 2-2.

Yeah, the Phils need some help pitching, but they also need to do a better job on offense, especially with guys on base.

This is the frustrating thing. 2nd and 3rd, no out and they get three pop ups. Nola is not pitching badly, in fact pitching a very nice game. Smyly had a nice game Sunday. Yes the Phils need a starter but I'm at the point where I think if they sign a good bat it's going to be wasted because I think the system is jacked up. Good players come in and struggle. Struggling players leave and thrive elsewhere. Anecdotal evidence. Maybe. Or not.

Suarez pitched great Sunday. Again, I don't know if that is who he is or not. He's been brutal other times.

15 strikeouts by Phillies going into bottom of 10!! Ridiculous, 5 full half innings of not putting the ball in play. Kingery, your lead off man, with 4.

now 16 Ks, as Quinn strikes out in the top of the 11th, with Franco on 3rd. 9 runners left on base, thru 11, for the Phils
