2019 Phillies thread

Noted an article where the Astros and Dodgers have programs to "fix" pitchers, cited Morton and Verlander to the Astros. Why can't the Phillies with all their money buy some of that coaching. Watching Phillies games in FL I frequently get opposition announcers and they often criticize pitch selection. I do think Phils need to replace pitching coach, at this point probably not till after the season.
Coaching and draft pick development have been bad enough for long enough that you must wonder about systematic issues under this ownership group.

I went to bed after the 9th so I isn’t see it, but what’s the issue with using Neris in the spot that he did?
Neris is your defacto closer, using him in the bottom of the ninth on the road in a tie game, if he doesn't lose it means you will at least need another pitcher in the bottom of the 10th, which may be a close situation if you score in the top of 10th. Don't recall batting order for top of 10th, would Neris' spot come up, but I just don't think Neris is a two inning pitcher; so you need someone else for bottom of 10th.

That’s what I figured was the reason.
But That whole idea has never made a lick of sense. You need another at bat to win the game. Put your best guy out there at that time to get to the next inning.

Manuel would drive me nuts with that. On more than one occasion he refused to Pappelbon in that spot. Then Pap would end up not pitching for a few games. Then he would put Pap in a non save/low leverage spot to get him work. He’d throw 30 pitches and be unavailable for the next game in a high leverage spot. Moronic

They were playing in Detroit, so the DH was used.

Your broader point is why I questioned using Neris. He's not very good beyond an inning, and not even good at that if his split-finger isn't spinning correctly.

Gabe does not want to use the bullpen tonight for whatever reason. Leaving Irvin in and getting ugly. Walk a guy in and still don’t get anybody up.

Don’t waste the pen on a lost cause.

I think it was Jim Leyland who once said knowing how to lose a game can be just as important as knowing how to win one

After Cole walked 3 guys and a hbp, Gabe leaves him in to bat in the bottom of the inning. Just wave the white flag and let the team go home now.

Just brutal game again. Walks, errors, lack of hustle, no clutch hitting. Broken record...

Cesar and Franco need to go

I’m not a Segura fan at all but you have to keep him

Put Kingery at 2nd. Bring up Bohm

I have been saying to trade Cesar at the deadline, somebody will take him as a utility infielder. Won't get much if anything in return, but opens up the way for Kingery permanent move to second base and shed some salary. I don't think you give up on Franco yet, plus you don't have anybody to play at 3rd base and nobody will take him anyway. I would keep him at 3rd everyday and see if he can do anything the rest of the year. He is very streaky. If he doesn't do much then you cut him come years end.

Eh.... Franco has played basically 4 full big league seasons and has a career WAR of 2.3. I mean, that is hard to do. Literally anyone would be better than him at this point

You know what, this team shouldn’t be looking at anyone. They are kidding themselves if they think a #3 starter is what they need to get over the hump. Hate to say it, but at this point, it is the Dodgers, the Braves, and everyone else is playing AAAA ball.

Can someone remind me of a team that came up so small in its biggest moments? I think Kapler needs to be put out at the end of the season. He is not the right voice for this team.

I agree 100%!
I would love to see Cubs manager and Hazleton native Joe Madden come to Philly! Maybe the Cubbies fold and fire Madden. Can only hope.

Haven't seen much of Hasely. But looks like he has some pop. And a 2 out RBI late in the game. So rare with this team

I just got home from the game today. It was a scorcher. As a Braves fan 2 hours up the Northeast extension, I only make it to a game or two each year when they're in town. I have a couple of observations from the day. There's advertising for our world campus frequently on the screen. But my favorite part was looking at the deepest part of center field, which is 409 feet. :)

You were zigging on the Pike when the Pocono crowd was zagging. I was at Pocono and when I crossed the Pike on 80 the southbound backlog looked brutal. Glad the Phils got one from the Braves while I was paying attention to something else. I guess we'll miss Mad Bum too, he pitched today. Thanks for small favors.

I spent many of days in that Pocono infield when it was like the wild west. The late 80's early 90's were so much fun in NASCAR. Davey Allison, Earnhardt, Million dollar Bill, Harry Gant, and the crew made it fun to watch. Too bad they killed it. The crappy point system that I can't follow and playoffs? Nevermind a ton of 1.5 mile cookie cutters. They need more Martinsvilles and Bristols.

I'm afraid the NFL isn't far behind. They have a great thing going but aren't satisfied and "want to make it better". Games overseas, 18 game seasons, etc. Stick with what the people want and we'll watch.

I hope college ball stays where they're at but I doubt it. $120 for the cheapest face value for the Whie Out game? Crazy.

I hear ya. I was around for those days too in NASCAR. They're never coming back. Handsome Harry won the first big race I ever saw in 91 at Dover. Won four races in September. Unreal. Lots of Phillies and Eagles hats in the crowd today but also many NYY and Mets. All good.

Phillies get Vargas from Mets with Cash considerations for minor league catcher Austin Biossart
Another stiff, but at least, hopefully, they can finally be rid of the bigger stiff Cole Irvin. Big mistake ever letting Irvin pitch in another major league game after defeating the minor league KC Royals in their big ball park. Destroyed all trade value for Irvin.

If Bohm and Howard are off the table, what do they really have to trade to upgrade team? Medina has struggled, Ortiz has not hit. Moniak? Has started to come around a little

The lack of top 100 prospects in their minor leagues really does hamstring the Phillies as they try to make trades. I'd be surprised if they made a "big" trade before the trade deadline, but perhaps they'll surprise me.

I am ok with it if they can get a couple of years of control. Bohm is very likely to be in Philly sometime next year. Howard will be fast mover if he can stay heathy. I don’t know much about the kid Stott drafted this year. But have to believe a highly drafted college bat moves fast. I like what I have seen from Hasely

I think a big point I’ve seen made is that they just have too many holes to justify going big at the deadline. You could add 1-2 big pieces and still only be a fringe wild card team.

The team is 2 or so years away. Bohm and Howard are part of your plan in that timeline. Keep them.
