2021 NCAAs

Anything Robbie accomplishes going forward is gravy. Hopes remain high but expectations remain grounded. Give ‘em hell, kid.

I constantly remind folks that sarcasm on a message board can be difficult to determine. It's a lot clearer if you put a smiley after the post.
Even that doesn't do it sometimes. Spend some time on the football board for all the unsolicited football education from SJ you can imagine... :) lmao

125 Consolation R3: Robbie Howard vs. Patrick McKee (Minnesota)

I'll use PK for the opponent

Per 1
McKee in on a single, Howard with a whizzer, then Howard grabs an ankle and they scramble, MKee elevates then Howard in a split, but McKee eventually with the TD, 0-2. Howard to his feet but they go OOB with 2:?? left. Howard to his base, and then flattened. McKee tilts him but only gets 1 swipe so no NF. McKee flips Howard over and gets the pin at 2:04. Howard is holding his left shoulder kind of strange, so he may have tweaked it there.

Tough sequence of matches for PSU

I'm ready for a break! These last two matches have been brutal. I hope Robbie and Brady recover quickly.

Is there going to be a break in the championship matches with an afternoon session for 165 - HWT?

Hope Howard's shoulder is okay. I like the way he wrestles. Could have really used a redshirt, but with the free year this was good experience. Some tough breaks for you guys this round.

I know that, but I think that's immaterial. IMHO, if you're being paid to provide PBP of PSU wrestling, that should be your entire focus when a PSU wrestler is wrestling. You can update other competitors during the time when PSUers are not wrestling.
I appreciate the updates on local kids. It didn’t seem to take away from the PSU coverage to me. Just my opinion...

PSU looked good early on in Session 3A, but an injury to Berge and then Howard getting pinned (and possibly injured) took some of the shine off of the session.

Please use this for all pre-session, in-session, and post-session discussions. If you're replying to another post, please use the Quote function.

When:
Thursday, March 19, 3 pm EDT

Where:
St. Louis, MO

TV:
ESPNU

Video Stream:
EPSN3 -- they'll have coverage on all 8 mats. You can watch multiple mats simultaneously on your computer, or watch only 1 mat -- you decide.

Audio Stream:
Jeff Byers's radio PBP will be streamed. I don't believe there is a pre-session portion, with coverage starting at 3 pm EDT. You can access the audio stream at:

PBP:
Unfortunately, I'm out for PBP in this session. I have something else to attend to. Hopefully, others can step forward and provide PBP.

I'll be back for Session 4 tonight.

Team Scoring:
The best place, IMHO, to get updated team scoring is the Penn State Wrestling Club's web site. You can access the virtual team scoring at:

Mat Assignments:
I post upcoming PSU mat assignments as I learn of them. Others do as well; we try to help each other out during NCAAs. The best sources I have found for mat assignments in past Nationals were TrackWrestling (go to their dashboard) or the Twitter account of Penn State Wresting (@pennstateWREST).

Let's keep it going, PSU

Local to where? Should he talk about all the PA guys since PSU is in Pennsylvania?

I agree with others he is there for Penn State and that should be his focus. Unless he is paying his own freight and is there to provide NCAA commentary. If that is the case then him calling other matches while a PSU guy is wrestling is understandable.

Um.....that first turn was actually a full nelson. Hand across the neck and then the right hand pry high shoulder. They do not have to touch.

And $$ says that's where the re-injury occurred.
I was about to ask - Didn't Howard have a previous shoulder injury, and could this be a re-injury of the previous condition? If so, that could be even more concerning.

Injuries always provide perspective of how fragile life can be. At this level of wrestling all it takes is one twist or turn in the wrong direction and suddenly instead of thinking about chasing your dream, you’re wondering whether you’ll ever wrestle again. Thoughts and prayers with Brady and Robbie for a complete recovery.

He did and that's what delayed his return this year.

I supposed I don't need to explain why a full nelson is illegal but the consequences of it's use result in a larger percentage of neck and shoulder injuries. May as well just scissor the head.

Interesting. As a ref, I often notice those things as soon as they happen. But with doing PBP, I actually was correcting something I had keyed in, so turned from the video stream until after Howard was turned. I'll have to try to go back and watch the match (probably not until after NCAAs are over).

He spent a good portion of his senior year on the sidelines with his arm in a sling and then had surgery (after winning the state championship). Pretty amazing to me that he competed at all this year.
