2021 NCAAs

157 R1: Berge vs. Andrew Cerniglia (Navy)

I'm going to use AC for his opponent.

Per 1
AC in quickly on a single, has Berge dancing, and Berge kicks away, and they go OOB with 2:40 left. Berge in on a single, AC fights, and eventually a stalemate with 1:33 left. AC reaches, nothing. Berge tries a snap, nothing. AC drives in and they go OOB with 1:14 left. Berge grabs a low ankle but loses it. Berge with a snap down near the end, and gets the TD just after the buzzer. End

Per 2
Berge takes bottom. He's up quickly, then gets out as they go OOB with 1:50 left. AC in quickly, nothing. AC in on a single, Berge sprawls, and a stalemate with 1:29 left. AC reaches, Berge with a counter and gets behind for the TD, 3-0. AC to his feet. Berge with an ankle pick and gets the TD late, 5-1. End

Per 3
AC to his feet and he's out, 5-2. Berge with a single and gets the TD, 7-2, and he cuts him, 7-3. Berge with an ankle pick for a TD, 9-3. And he cuts him, 9-4. Berge with another TD off a double, 11-4. RT goes over 1 min. Stall warning on AC on the bottom. End. With 1:45 of RT it's a 12-4 Major for Berge!

Cerniglia is damn good as well and Brady flat broke him. Beautiful to see especially coming from Berge

Fun fact: Ben Askren, Willie Saylor & Willie’s unnamed MatScout sidekick all picked Cerniglia to beat Berge. Askren had him going to the semis!
Askren also got in trouble on the plane ride. He wasn't putting his mask back on fast enough between sips of coffee, and got yelled at. Bad day for him.

Well that round couldn’t have went much better. Really proud of Robbie and I love seeing Berge turning on the offense and making sure to get bonus. Bonus is going to be huge in this tournament

Brady needs to trust his shots. He can attack multiple ways With the single, double, ankle pick etc. He’s way to talented to be in 3-3 matches with guys late in the third. He’s good enough to be majoring guys if he just commits and goes.

Nice start by PSU in Session 1A.

Please use this for all pre-session, in-session, and post-session discussions. If you're replying to another post, please use the Quote function.

When:
Thursday, March 18, 2 pm EDT

Where:
St. Louis, MO

TV:
ESPNU

Video Stream:
EPSN3 -- they'll have coverage on all 8 mats. You can watch multiple mats simultaneously on your computer, or watch only 1 mat -- you decide.

Audio Stream:
Jeff Byers's radio PBP will be streamed. The wrestling coverage starts at 2 pm EDT. (It does not appear that there is a pre-Session part of the show, but I could be mistaken.) You can access the audio stream at:

PBP:
I'll provide coverage of as many PSU matches as I can (basically, all of them, unless two PSUers end up wrestling at the same time).

Team Scoring:
The best place, IMHO, to get updated team scoring is the Penn State Wrestling Club's web site. You can access the virtual team scoring at:

Mat Assignments:
I post upcoming PSU mat assignments as I learn of them. Others do as well; we try to help each other out during NCAAs. The best sources I have found for mat assignments in past Nationals were TrackWrestling (go to their dashboard) or the Twitter account of Penn State Wresting (@pennstateWREST).

Let's keep it going, PSU
