Just finished watching “
Highlights” of last seasons game against Ohio State on the BTN. Wow.. how bad was our offense… Defense solid.. offense was as bad as I have ever seen at Penn State…it hurt watching again. Not one solid receiver.. zero…

I also watched the replay. Thought Allar was particularly bad and missed a number of open receivers in the first half. Sad part is that OSU looked very beatable that day.

We had some crazy bad stat line for passing when the game still mattered.

Just kept doing it too. Like we wanted to lose.

The game flipped on the torally bs holding call on King that erased the Jacobs td . I also remember a fairly mundane play that I felt impacted the game, KLS broke totally free on a crossing route and Allar simply didn’t delver the ball that would have been an easytd. KLS was never the same after that game.

It wasn't a bs call. King mugged MHJ but the crap thing about it is he didn't need to. The play was not going to MHJ. When you mug the other team's superstar WR it will be called especially Ohio State in Ohio stadium.

If the uniforms were reversed, it doesn't get called. We can show significant video evidence of this.

Doesn’t say much for KLS

Are we allowed to this say now?
Previously, mentioning that the 2023 O was abysmal against even mediocre opponents, was met with retorts of stat lines and point totals that were run up in the 4th quarter after the pure size of PSU wore down smaller opponent DLs. Against OU over the last few years, the O has rarely looked good and though most of the games were relatively close, it never felt like PSU was in a position to win, unless the D put points on the board.

Unfortunately, I don’t see much improvement happening this year on offense. I hope I’m dead wrong.

I feel like the offense has the greatest opportunity to improve. 1) New coordinator known for getting players in space, 2) Returning QB likely to make a jump from year 1 to 2, 3) A solid returning group and a couple of key additions.

I agree that they have the biggest room for improvement. But we’ve seen this many times before. I just want to see it.

You must've not been around when we lost to Iowa 6-4 and they took the second safety on purpose!

Have you noticed how tight we play in those games until we fall behind by 2 scores in the 4th quarter? Then we open things up because we have no choice and we start moving the ball.

I do.
I also noticed how we kept having a QB who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn throw over and over.
Yeah, sure it was open. Because OSU saw what any sensible person did... that the QB was terrible.

Yeah but the game is lost at that point and OSU knows it. It is irrelevant what we do at that point.

Watch any game from last year and honestly tell me you saw a good offense

Go ahead...calls are missed that hurt and benefit every team. This was the correct call and there's no reason to believe, other than desperation and pettiness, that the correct call wouldn't have been made against Ohio State. It was blatant.

The "mugging" occurred after turnover. At worst it could have been an illegal block (post-possession).

Horrible call that likely affected the outcome of the game.

It was good in every game except for OSU.
(And I've recently re-watched every game from last year except for UMD, MSU and Rutgers)

Michigan? The offense was okay most of the year. Good seems a little high. They didn't commit turnovers and sustained drives. The lack of splash plays in the run and pass games were a problem all year.

No, McCord still had the ball. He was getting pressured moving to his left and before Jacob's got in his grill. I believe the ball was still in his control.

The pathetic thing about this play is our supposed first round corner, King, can't read the play well. He just mugs him despite the fact that it would have been very difficult for McCord to get the ball to MHJ.

OC was fired over that hot mess and we have a new one. We'll see but everything has been done to fix the problem.

IIRC, Allar was near tears talking about how poorly he played against tOSU. Ohio is home state and I know for a fact that he takes a lot of crap for it.

Don't know if this was mentioned, but the DL appeared to being doing pretty well. For some reason they put van den Berg in there at right DT. The Buckeyes OC immediately saw this and called a run play right at him. The OSU left OG buried him moving him completely out of the play. Then Henderson ran something like 50-60 yards for a TD. That appeared to be a huge game changer.

I just re-watched this.

That it not the case.

Nope. I just rewatched this several times. MHJ initially gets mugged when he is at the 20 yard line. McCord is in the pocket then. King continues to mug him as he goes from the 20 to the 15 as McCord steps up and moves to his left. McCord does not lose control of the ball until after MHJ is past the 15. I am not sure when the ref threw the flag and maybe he threw it late but there was clear holding on MHJ before McCord lost the ball.

Listen, I don't like Ohio State but you have to look at it objectively. This was a dumb penalty on a guy that welcomed the challenge of going up against MHJ then totally flops. He did not need to hold and we would have had a 10-3 lead putting them on the ropes.

First, Ohio St DBs were draped all over PSU WRs before the ball arrived the entire game without getting the calls. Some were egregious. And their OL had blatant non-called holds especially on Chop a few times.

On the PI that erased the TD in the Ohio St game, there absolutely should have been a hold called on the OL. It was very obvious and in space. Rusher beat the OL and was tackled from behind.

Then the refs called like 3 straight penalties to help the Buckeyes score because it would have been too obvious to just place the ball in the end zone for Ohio St. 14-point swing. The refs won that game.

The amount of excuses on this thread is remarkable...but then again, not really. It's par for the course.

I was at the game in Columbus and then saw multiple replays and viewings -- King beyond mugged MHJR and it wasn't close. He didn't need to in what might have been the biggest play of the season. That OSU offense (by their standards) was solid at best all year. We would have been up a TD after the Jacobs fumble return. And, with our defense combined with McCord on the other side, that might have been enough. The 2nd year D under Manny was excellent. King talked a big game, didn't back it up, and his fundamentals and overall body language was garbage all year as he routinely got cooked more than a Thanksgiving turkey.

King, Allar, terrible WR's and offensive gameplan, and JF stupidly going for it with more than 6 min left in the 4th quarter in our own territory, did in PSU in vs OSU last year. The refs might not have helped, but to blatantly say they won the game is so laughable. But, again, not surprising that people can't affix a loss to JF et al.

You lost people on this board with the word "objectively."

That must have been a very painful game to watch in person. The ineptitude of our offense rivaled the 6-4 game yet we had many more talented players.

Ohio State was so ripe for the taking that day and we failed time and time again to take advantage. That penalty on the scoop and score showed how vulnerable Ohio State was at QB. McCord was slow and unathletic on that play (a microcosm of the player he is). He is holding the ball out kind of plodding to his left and awkwardly trying to get in position to throw it. But he is too slow and Jacob's is too fast for him. That play does not happen with a Stroud or a Fields back there. So there it is, the play we had been waiting for to set us up to have an excellent shot to beat them and.....King makes the boneheaded play. There it is again, not being able to make the clutch play. One guy does and the other guy ruins it. So frustrating.

Franklin and Yurcich seemingly had no clue on offense. You are right, he stupidly thinks the offense is going to miraculously come through on a 4th down conversion when the offense could not do squat all game especially the 2nd half. Why trust the defense? They have only played well all game. Boom, ball game with 6 minutes left.

I believe we will be undefeated heading to the Coliseum this year. Can Franklin finally get a good road win against a good team??

Going for it on that 4th down with I believe around 7 min left was beyond stupid. We were down one possession and even a field goal puts it out of reach. Rather than punting and pinning OSU deep and making them move the ball on maybe our best D under JF in his tenure, we stupidly go for it. Par for the course.

Great point...that was our play to make against a pedestrian OSU team for once...we finally had it in our grasp to really pivot in a big game and put the pressure on a QB and team that would have been feeling the heat at home. But King blew it.

JF has had some nice wins on the road...Auburn, Wisconsin, Iowa. But, a USC would be different. That is a program with excellent athletes, specifically at WR. They are down by their standards, but USC is a big time historical blue blood. Would be a huge win if we don't step on our d****.

Absolutely that call late in the game to go for it our own territory took away any remaining chance to win.

I will continue to disagree about the 14-point swing by the referees. It was a hold by King but much less blatant than several no calls against our WRs that day. The flag came out late, after it was obvious that no one was catching Jacobson.

The fact remains that there were many pivotal no calls on clear penalties by Ohio St players in that game such as several blatant holds including tackles from behind in space by their OL on our DEs (Chop had a couple himself). Again, there were several holds/muggings on PSU WRs that day not called that were worse than King's hold on that game winning call by the refs.

Edward....we went 0-16 until recording a 3rd down conversion on our final drive in the 4th quarter. Have a freaking pulse offensively and then maybe I'll consider some flags that went against us. For a program like ours, in year 10 under this HC, two apparent high end running backs, a so called 5 star qb, a standout LT, etc., to go 0-16 on 3rd downs until the game was out of reach is beyond inexcusable in a big game. It's still mind boggling to me. JF hasn't had a team ready to go on both sides of the ball in a big game in many, many yrs. Spare me with flags that went against us.
