2024 Olympic Trials match and discussion thread

Wow…Gilman looked great. Pushed Lee all over the mat. Damn shame that wasn’t feet to back. Sure as hell looked like it.

Have we won a challenge in 2 days?

These two guys know each other too well. A lot of hand fighting with one great scramble that led to no points.

Tough but also fun watching Zain and Nick wrestle each other. It caused just about the amount of blood I expected.

It was Cody, but it looked like Thomas wanted it.

He could’ve given it back to them, right?

he could have, yes. it was a really difficult call and situation imo.

in real time it seemed like a textbook 4 to me.

Ok. But what does that say about yelling 'career is over?' Is that the kind of basic human respect to which you speak?

I believe basic human dignity is better preserved when mercy is shown to the vanquished.
He's a fan, fans interact. A rich successful person now might have to sit on his ass and count his money. It's all part of the game. You don't want fans at games or matches, fine, let's see how much interest there is in sports after that.

Burroughs was not vanquished, he lost at sports ball. Something he's been well compensated for doing. It's not war, it's not life or death, it's a game. And if it was war he wouldn't here any boos or comments after he was vanquished because he'd be dead.

Well I have seen that one and it was actually entertaining, but having it repeat often would not. How about this, retain criteria but have it only carry over into a 2-3 minute OT? I find that option far better, granted not perfect.
I don't hate it but IMO it would be not as good as the current system.

Criteria is not about the outcome -- it's about the process. After the first point of the match, somebody is winning at all times, and therefore there is no incentive for both guys to mail it in in the 2nd period.

We've seen plenty of matches at B10s, NCAAs, and states where both guys shut down in the last 30-60 minutes of regulation. This system prevents that.

The other issues are: (1) if no scoring in OT, then we just use regulation criteria anyway; (2) It de-emphasizes conditioning -- a gassed wrestler could extend a tie into OT, get a massive break, and then get a quick winning score off the OT whistle.

No idea what you're talking about wrt rich people. Are you saying poor people can not have and show class? Or are you saying rich people are forced to act classy? Sort of reads that way. I don't believe either to be true.

Maybe try not to take everything I write literally.

There remain larger truths. Mercy is good. Grace is good. One's station in life doesn't limit its ability to be shown.

Hey dummy - anyone have links to a bracket ?? ;)

I'll chime in I guess. I do respect Jordan for the massive impact he has had on USA wrestling. I am very grateful for his contribution to a sport that I love. That said, he has never shied away from the smoke. Did he deserve to have that ass yelling at him as he walked off the mat for the last time? Absolutely not. Did he kinda bring it on himself with his antics? Yeah, he kinda did.
Both true, if they want interested and passionate fans at these things and they want to play up certain things for social media fame, this goes with it. I have an idea. No fans, no ticket sales, nothing but print media coverage and maybe radio feeds like it was 1930 or so. then see the money that is made by these guys.

It's like going to Florida and complaining about mosquitos and the heat.

Maybe try not to be so the way you are. Burroughs has made a fortune from wrestling, a very competitive sport, part of which is building a brand and getting medias attention and profiting from it. In doing this sport some will disagree with you and as long as they are allowed to watch these sports in person, which helps pay you, they will sometimes boo. deal with it. Stop trying to be so deliberately pedantic.

This isn't some huge morality play, it's a game that he has been well compensated from playing. The fans paid some big money to be close enough to make a comment he could hear.

Basic human dignity?

it’s close and gilman’s body blocks the angle of spencer’s back from this view. do they have a different angle for review?
So this is a god Jess
also this, boys. this. let's have some perspective, huh?

No one thinks you’re a Penn State hater outside about 10 people. Haven’t really seen it in this thread.

Just interesting that, in an entire building of inebriated wrestling fans, we’re calling out what’s said to JB. What makes JB special as a protected wrestler?

If the answer is “I called out everyone getting insulted and it was only JB so that’s who I called out”. Then it seems that one guy getting called out over hours means they’re pretty good wrestling fans tbh.

Blaze dec Lilledahl 5-1 on a 2nd period takedown + lace. Lilledahl struggled to find an opening to shoot. Blaze also used a Russian tie to kill clock -- not saying he stalled, just that it was a smart and effective approach with the lead.
Free is growing on me. This weekend I’ve learned more about scoring and strategy plays than I knew by a ton. That match was low scoring but fun.
