2025 Big Ten Tournament thread - Day 1

Ed Ruth doesn't make the podium in his freshman year with that rule. He injury defaulted in the NCAA quarters.

Reasonable?
Also, Starocci wouldn't have qualified for nationals last year because you have to wrestle 2 matches at your conference tourney to be eligible so, with this proposed rule, he injury defaults the first match and he's done for the tourney, he's done for the year. Come to think of it, let's make it a rule!

Last evening we were seated next to a couple of kids who I believe were some of Iowa’s room guys and they were raising their fists and screaming “staaallliiinnn” from the get go. As soon as an Iowas wrestler broke his opponent down to the mat their calls for stalling were almost instantaneous.

The riding time doesn't carry over into the TB's, but if you have 1:00+ RT and the end of SV you win with the RT point. See the NCAA Rulebook:

First Sudden-Victory Period. In tournament or dual-meet competition when competitors are tied at the end of three regular periods, the first round of overtime shall begin with a sudden-victory period of two minutes with no rest between the regular match and the sudden-victory period. The sudden-victory period will begin with both wrestlers in the neutral position. Exception: Nonbleeding injury timeout. If, because of a first nonbleeding injury timeout, a wrestler secures one minute of riding time at the conclusion of the sudden-victory period, that wrestler shall be awarded one point for riding time and be declared the winner.
Thanks. Seeing the RT clock running got me to thinking. Not enough time last night to look it up between matches.

In the 2 matches they have wrestled collegiately I'm pretty sure Kerk was <230lbs. He is a full grown 250+ now. I think he will acquit himself well.
Gabe said last evening he’s weighing in around 270 after spending much of the season around 280 and feels a bit quicker as a result. I’m pulling for Kerk, but he’ll certainly have his hands full (no pun intended).

2024 PSU saw Starocci go 0-2 due to injury. 2025 PSU has Starocci at 16.5 points right now. So you could say PSU is 7.5 points off of last year’s pace.

But how can you not be at least a little disappointed that Beau and Shayne lost as 1 seeds to guys they have dominated in the past?
Disappointed, sure, but not surprised, not even after prior dominance, and not when VV gave BB all he could handle last March. Wrestlers are athletes who literally fight one another. A warrior mentality is strong in ALL these young men, perhaps strongest in those sharing the sport’s toughest conference. Our Lions win bouts, even titles, more often than most. We’re lucky for that. But a fighting, warrior mentality that turns around a prior loss—even against a Lion—doesn’t surprise me at all.
Now, about getting those 6 B1G titles tonight . . .

Spot on. Yesterday was a good day. Lots of things to build off of. Cael & Co have proven time and time again that they can make the necessary adjustments to build from B1G10s to NCAAs. Just look at Davis. His loss to Shawver was hard to watch but he came back in the consis with a bit of fire in his eyes. We’ll see if it carries through to today but we have everything to be grateful for and excited about this team.
Yeah, we’re at the point where 6 finalists and an insurmountable lead after Friday is somehow a disappointment. That’s definitely first world problems.

Roll onto your back and take the fall or get DQed for it.
