2025 Big Ten Tournament thread - Day 1

Quick question….if Peterson rode smith out, I assume the riding time would have carried to rideout. Is that correct?
The riding time doesn't carry over into the TB's, but if you have 1:00+ RT and the end of SV you win with the RT point. See the NCAA Rulebook:

First Sudden-Victory Period. In tournament or dual-meet competition when competitors are tied at the end of three regular periods, the first round of overtime shall begin with a sudden-victory period of two minutes with no rest between the regular match and the sudden-victory period. The sudden-victory period will begin with both wrestlers in the neutral position. Exception: Nonbleeding injury timeout. If, because of a first nonbleeding injury timeout, a wrestler secures one minute of riding time at the conclusion of the sudden-victory period, that wrestler shall be awarded one point for riding time and be declared the winner.

For anyone who’s feeling blue about tonight’s results, just imagine for a second you’re an Iowa fan. Then I promise you’ll feel better 😆
Theys was all staaaalllllinnnnn i tell ya. Every last one of em that outscored ours guys. Theys was all staaaalllllinnnnn.

Yep. Making fun of Iowa always makes me feel better.

Sure, I was bummed that Bartlett, Van Ness and Barr lost. But it was still an awesome day! Lightning Luke majored the #1 wrestler at 125. A true freshman majored the wrestler that dethroned Lord Spencer. Let that sink in a bit more. (The high of that awesome win probably helped amplify the negative feelings of many fans with the following two losses.)

And holy sh$% batman, we need to talk more about Kasak. That was impressive. Haines with another 7 pointer over Kennedy. Kerk with a MD. CStar with a MD (Smith should've been stalled out). And we seem to take Mesenbrink for granted a little bit. He just completely broke a kid that he failed to tech at the dual.

As for Bartlett, we've seen this before more than once. No big deal. Live by the close match, die by the close match.

Barr was a Bormet brain fart away from losing to Cardenas at the dual. They are very evenly matched. I'll take Penn State's track record of reversing Big 10 results at NCAAs all day, everyday. And he's still a freshman.

Van Ness was a weird one. It's a good thing we have some decent coaches to help him figure it out.

This is exactly how I feel. This board is filled with a bunch of people who I assume are really great guys (I've met a few, but know that many of those who I haven't met would also be friends if I DID know them), but geez Louise it's hard to take some of the commentary if things aren't absolutely perfect from the PSU perspective. And yeah, some of the negative Nellies are just guys that show up here once a year at tournament time, but some of them are regulars. Yesterday was a good day and I'm sure today will be as well. I'm really hopeful that Davis can beat Braxton Brown today (and then avenge the Shawver "loss" which was more highway robbery than a real loss), but all 10 of our guys are set up for good runs at NCAAs and the coaches will do what they do in the meantime.

Search function not working, but was there any talk of Penn State killing the Granby roll yesterday? Luke twice and Carter once just released rather than roll through, and then secured the easy takedown.

Goodale and Ryan getting into it during reach around Rogotzke’s illegal slam-declared victory-then minutes later declared defeat was good backside theater.

Iowa fans around us were almost all great and we bantered the whole day except for the one insufferable broad who chewed her husband’s ass from pillar to post during Session 1. Fortunately they sat elsewhere during Session 2.

I suspect there is an awesome Kasak celebration photo on the mat after his semi win. PSU camera guy was matside and Kasak went right to him. Haven’t seen the photo yet.

Vombaur and Ethan Miller co-top dog dickheads for their win celebrations.

Welsh Ryan a great venue. B1G needs to figure something out with empty seats at this event.

@86PSUPaul @hlstone are the mans!

Had some extra pizza at Lou Malnati’s yesterday and invited a lovely couple from PSU to skip the wait and finish off our lunch. Great conversation. As always, meeting others at these events and exchanging stories is as good as the wrestling.

So they bought beers, and your wife wasn’t with you.

Great night! Six to finals, Luke’s coming out, Tyler’s “how ‘bout I just stop the damn bleeding” pin, Braeden’s bounce back. Like we didn’t already know Vombaur is a beast? Cardenas, too? Shayne’s loss puzzles but could also be his last of the season.
And if having the sport’s greatest team ever wasn’t enough, the clock trick gets the B1G finals (and Philly) here sooner.

The fact that Steveson was in the WWE and spent time with Bills and is back wrestling at Minnesota seems odd
Oh - I saw him lay his shoes on the mat years ago. Oh well . . he’s an all-timer and most are happy to see his excellency ascend to the throne once more )*). Perhaps his HS teammate Mark Hall will come back next year as rule stretching is much in vogue.
(*) here’s to hoping that Antknee will share some of his magic potion with GregK

Shirt of the day.

Yes we have 6 finalists. But how can you not be at least a little disappointed that Beau and Shayne lost as 1 seeds to guys they have dominated in the past?

The Barr match was fine and Davis losing wasn’t shocking. But I doubt anyone had Beau or Shayne losing in the semis. Is it the end of the world? No. Can they both still win NCAAs? Of course. But it’s still disappointing tonight regardless.
It’s the nature of our obsession. Until we crown 10 champs, . . . we’re always going to feel bad for our guys who do not achieve their goals.

Terrible officiating job in the other semi. Two officials and neither could see Peterson's knee in PD for multiple seconds. The trail official's most important job should be to prevent injuries if the lead can't see that side.
There's a certain irony in Peterson losing, in part, due to a slow pd call. Rutgers fans REALLY hate pd calls.

I think it's smart. If you want to get great info, you should pay for it. People pay for BTN, BTN+, Rokfin, Flo, etc. Why not PSWC?
Fine, but the jerk move (using the nice term there) was cutting it off mid-day yesterday. There through half the day, then magically moved behind the paywall. And no way would I pay for a spreadsheet that I can make myself.

17.5, but who’s counting. 😉
No. We have 145 points this year. The nine PSU wrestlers not named Carter have 128.5 of them. Last year, the nine PSU wrestlers not named Carter had scored 136 points on Saturday. So that equals 7.5 points behind.

Ummm… Starocci has 17.5 now, not the 16.5 you said. That’s what I was saying. 😊

I think it got moved behind the paywall in the middle of the day because the traffic was more than they anticipated. There was enough traffic that the site was not able to function.

I remember when humility was one of those life lessons sports taught younger folks. That seems to all but have disappeared.

Project much?

Ever give the benefit of the doubt to others when something doesn't go your way or work as it had previously?

You are basically spouting nonsense full of ass-umptions.

It crashed. I am a dues paying member. I was logged in. Access was unavailable to all.

What? My comment has nothing to do with the website

Not that it means that much but how did the announcers decide that Webster was the Outstanding Wrestler? Their logic was that he beat the top seed. Well, Luke MAJORED the top seed. You know, the guy that pinned Lord Spencer.
There's no such thing as a Day 1 OW.

Yep. Making fun of Iowa always makes me feel better.
Last evening we were seated next to a couple of kids who I believe were some of Iowa’s room guys and they were raising their fists and screaming “staaallliiinnn” from the get go. As soon as an Iowas wrestler broke his opponent down to the mat their calls for stalling were almost instantaneous.

Spot on. Yesterday was a good day. Lots of things to build off of. Cael & Co have proven time and time again that they can make the necessary adjustments to build from B1G10s to NCAAs. Just look at Davis. His loss to Shawver was hard to watch but he came back in the consis with a bit of fire in his eyes. We’ll see if it carries through to today but we have everything to be grateful for and excited about this team.
