2025 Big Ten Tournament thread - Day 1

285 SF - Greg Kerkvliet VS Joshua Heindselman (MICH)
Period 1:
Kerk pushes forward off the whistle. Kerk works a 2 on 1, then drops to a leg for the quick TD, 3-0. Kerk quickly gets Heindselman bellied out. Heindselman stays on his belly for 30-sec & counting. Kerk goes over a minute RT & Heindselman has been on his belly for all of it. Kerk has a leg in & is turking on Heindselman. Stoppage for something. Heindselman is still down. Kerk has 1:18 RT. Kerk cuts Heindselman, 3-1. Kerk goes back to the 2 on 1, but Heindselman jerks his arm away. Kerk goes back to it & reaches for a leg, but can't get there. Kerk tries to trip Heindselman to the mat, but no luck & they go out of bounds, neutral restart, 21-sec left. Kerk goes back to the 2 on 1. More circling & tying up to end the period. 3-1 Kerk +1:20 RT
Period 2:
Kerk takes down. He gets to his feet & quickly gets the escape, 4-1. Kerk still has +1:16 RT. Back to tying up in the center. Kerk looks for another 2 on 1, but Heindselman doesn't want any of that. Kerk hits a sweep single for another TD, 7-1, then gets quickly Heindselman bellied out again. Kerk goes over 2-min RT, 30-sec left. Stall warning on Heindselman, restart. Heindselman is still down. Kerk rides out the period. 7-1 Kerk, +2:27 RT
Period 3:
Heindselman takes down & quickly gets bellied out, 90-sec left. Kerk looks for a turn. Heindselman does nothing & gets another stall call, point Kerk, 8-1. Kerk keeps looking for a turn. Heindselman keeps laying on his belly. Kerk goes over 4-min, yes, 4-min of riding time & Heindselman has been on his belly for 95% of it. Kerk rides out the period & adds a RT point for the 9-1 Major!

The fact that Steveson was in the WWE and spent time with Bills and is back wrestling at Minnesota seems odd
I was at practice a few years ago where Cael specifically told the guys you don’t have to do interviews if you don’t want to. In that case it was before Nationals, but don’t assume it is the BIG that is ignoring our guys.

Welp, like most things in sports things ebb and flow. Vombauer isn’t a fish and Webster isn’t either.
I’d have preferred that Bo beat Myles in the 17 semis and Nick Lee would have beaten Mikey Carr in 18. They turned out ok. Crap happens.

But I’ll say this. Our guys aren’t immune to being nervous or tentative or any of that. Humans same as anyone. Makes what they consistently achieve even more impressive.
That's why guys like Nolf and MM never lose, they can give up an early TD but their attack rate makes up for it.

The big thing tonight what happened to our offense? We wrestle like this in2 weeks we won’t score anywhere near last years team

Feldman got to his legs twice and whiffed, Kerk has a better shot at finishing for sure.
And he hasn't missed a beat. Kerk has a big uphill climb tomorrow.

We have 6 in the finals and the other 4 are all alive for third.
It applies to the posters, not the wrestlers. Maybe in the next 20 years or so until Cael retires, everyone will figure out that PSU wrestles better at NCAAs than at B10s. Probably not though, if the past 14 years aren't enough evidence.

Literally any program in history including ours would have been cool with 6(!) finalists and all ten alive for 3rd. Until about 2 years ago.

Really, that’s where you are going? Seriously, the other teams have pretty good wrestlers too and if you took away two finalists, where would they be?
If the program continues on this trajectory it should probably be canceled. Only 6 finalist... pffft.
As much as it feels like a bit of a rough session tonight, the fact remains that Minnesota has 3 finalists and they have been eliminated from the team race, and Iowa with 3 finalists will be eliminated early in the conso round tomorrow. All-in-all a good tournament for us, and hopefully we close it out with a bang!
