4 PENN STATE PLAYERS GET TESLAS AS PART OF NIL DEAL

It never existed...it was always a ploy to get the fan base to be content with doing things the right way as opposed to winning. Many fell for it and still haven't realized what Paterno sold them.
Except for the fact that it did exist. He consistently won and challenged for national championships, played and won major bowl games while graduating a much higher percentage of players (without clustering or any of the techniques commonly used to game the system) while working under more stringent rules than any of his piers, all while consistently making less money and donating more back to the University and community. It meant there would be down years but he didn't care. Doing things the right way was far more important.

Bullshit.

Paterno's success with honor was real.

It's weak to try to talk that down.

I know a guy who was always offensive that said the same thing "People just don't like honesty"

So, I can then say "your wife is fat and ugly", right?
No it wasn't. You're just desperate to believe that was real. Paterno wasn't different than coaches you hated. It's just bias and hypocrisy. Paterno was smart--he sold that to a fan base so on down years people would pretend it was okay because other teams were cheating and they even convinced themselves "rebuilding years" existed in college football.
You can say anything you want--if you knew her and believed that you're entitled to your opinion. Why would I care about your opinion on that?

Part of that early success was we were an independent and had schedules we'd destroy other teams for having down. The success wasn't consistent as you know. Grad rates doesn't define honor. Nor does it define success. It was something Paterno wanted fans to believe mattered. It never did--still doesn't to this day.

Making less money and donating back to the University was also a way to stay long after he needed to go. He was loyal but that's not "better". That's simply a decision.

And no that doesn't justify down years. Not at all. See--his ploy worked.

Lando is an Ohio St fan. He consistently says things to try to diminish anything PSU and always tries to talk up Ohio st. A number of posters have called the guy out. There are a couple of other Ohio St fans that pretend to be fans of other programs here including one that pretends to be a Michigan fan but that guy has disappeared after the now annual Michigan beat down of Ohio St.

Also, Wallace Breen and ole ted are known Michigan fans.
Ole ted is but Wallace is not.

This will eventually blow up. I believe some kid will end up suing a school because they didn't make good on their financial promises. It is bound to happen. You can't pay every decent player and still have money left. It is the reason NFL rosters are 53.....they couldn't afford to pay 85.
The schools are not paying this, it's local companies that are on the hook for all the cash and other items

I know that. But you know as welll as I do they are in contact with the staff as to who needs nil. A recruit is t meeting with bobs lumber they go through a middle man. And that middle man is someone from the staff. To think otherwise is having your head in the sand.

As originally stated, the "financial promise" is from a company or individual.

Just as an FYI, high school players in 25 states can now also get NIL deals, and there are many who do. That's right, HS players are getting paid to play sports. The ON3 website actually lists NIL values for every recruit and HS player. PSU is around 10th for average NIL deal.
If paying high school athletes for endorsements actually pays off in terms of selling more of a product/service, I think it says way more about society than it does about the status of amateur athletics in this country.

I hate when I get what I’m being sold. ;)
You were also sold players graduating with real degrees while meeting Penn State's rigorous compliance requirements. Oh, and that compliance department does not reside in the athletic department unlike pretty much every other school. It resides on the academic side of the house and for at least two decades reported to people that were openly hostile to athletics in general and football specifically. No small feat.

You didn't get what you were sold. You got the watered down version. Notice even comments like "the most undefeated uncrowned seasons" which is meaningless. Although those same people still like the bowls.
Notice how much discussion has happened here for bowl season so far this year...
This is the game today. NIL should be a positive for a program like Penn State. Success with Honor doesn't exist without continued success which we didn't have. You all bought into rebuilding years and thinking college football was about something more than winning titles. It isn't and never was. College football has been a big business for at least the past 30 years--likely 40.
What Paterno sold you on was "it's okay if we don't win because we still better than them because we do things the right way"--which created the holier than thou nonsense which is why people wanted us to fall unlike Michigan and Ohio State with their scandals.

I agree with you regarding the big business aspect of college football - it has been a big business since the ‘80s, including here at PSU. Any alum pretending that it’s been anything other than a money machine for the university is fooling themselves. I do think Joe did emphasize academics far more than most, but primarily the football program has been a revenue generator for the university and a minor league team / NFL talent incubator for 40+ years.

Agreed--I'm not saying Joe didn't care about academics. It just wasn't the most important thing in the grand scheme of things.
