6A Final Reading 64 Pine-Richland 60

That's great. Two weeks ago I was in Reading. My buddy and I stopped at the Queen City Diner on Lancaster Ave for brunch before heading up to New York for the Big East Final. In comes the Reading High team - probably having their pregame meal I guess. All of the patrons wished them luck.

Best part was Lonnie Walker posed for some pictures with little kids, which was really great of him to do. Boy I wish we could have gotten Lonnie to Villanova. Things being how they are though, probably best to get him as far from Reading as possible.

Why is Reading football so awful? When the players came in, all I could think of is, there's a whole bunch of guys that would be terrific linebackers, receivers and defensive backs.

Al Wolski restored the program, then State College stole him. He took SC to AAAA state title game, losing to LaSalle College High School.

So which schools have not done it clean and fair? Remember, the PIAA sets the rules, or lack thereof. No denying Philly has some of the best hoops in the country. Those kids from N-G, Imhotep and Wood have to play somewhere. Not to mention Ryan, Roman, Constitution, MLK, Gratz, and on and on....

Bishop Guilfoyle does not do it clean and fair.
Bethlehem Catholic does not do it clean and fair.

And this is where Groller puts his foot in his mouth. He refers to Wood "allegedly" pulling kids from out of state. He shouldn't say anything without proof.

Wood had NEVER won a PCL basketball championship in a thousand years. The big man couldn't even dribble a ball up the court last year. Gillespie and the rest have been playing at Wood since 9th grade. But it doesn't matter with the media today, everything goes.

Reading's problem is the same as what you will see with many inner-city school. Difficulty keeping kids on the right tract because of all the "distractions" that the city naturally brings. Reading is a school that will only graduate 60% of it's students and will have reading and math proficiency scores at about half the state average. In short, keeping kids eligible and engaged is an issue. I would imagine that smaller sized team sports like basketball are a little easier to manage.

As a 92 RHS Alumnus, I was there with over 9000 other folks from Reading! We owned Hershey tonight and then we took it back to the city and celebrated the winningest program in PA history's 1st State Title!!

RED KNIGHTS!!!

Not sure how to get the image to show in the thread...

2000+ wins and first state title for the Reading Red Knights.

RHS-78 Congratulations to the champions. Reading was a good place to be a kid back then. Shoutout to Stu Jackson's 73 team that lost to General Bradock in the final and the 78 team that finished 3rd in state tourney.

PIAA solution is easy ... keep 6 divisions, just make 4 public schools and two for the private/charters. Florida does this exact thing and it has no complaints. My HS has been in the sweet 16, 3 of last 4 yrs but has no chance once they compete against those that pull from broad bases.

Groller, self proclaimed expert usually wakes up in the morning with his foot already in his mouth, really bad so called sports reporter!

The pros have noticed Lonnie Walker. This from the McDonald's All-American game notes:

http://www.nbadraft.net/mcdonalds-all-american-practice-notes
Lonnie Walker 6’4 205 SG - Miami

Walker had a very good showing at practice. He displayed high level athleticism and slashed into the paint very effectively. He got hot in day two, knocking down three pointers on four plays in a row. He’s a very good perimeter scorer and has very translatable skills. Walker showed he belonged with the nation’s best and may not be at Miami for long.
