Earl just posted some great numbers looking at the past 10 years of NCAA wrestling. A lot to take in, so I thought I would distill it a bit into what that looks like on average.
So in a typical year:
- PSU has 3 champs
- tOSU, Cornell, and Okie St all crown a champ
- 2 champs are wearing either Iowa, Mizzou, Illinois or Minny singlets
- 2 champs come from the field (with NC State the leader with one every 3 years)
- 5 of the champs are #1 seeds
- 9 of the champs are seeded top 3
- 6 of the champs come from the B1G
- 1 champ will have transferred from another school
- 2 of the champs will hail from PA, 2 more will come from OH or NJ
- PSU has 4 finalists
- tOSU, Iowa, Cornell, and Okie State combined put 6 guys in the finals
- The other half of the finalists come from the field
- PSU has 6 AAs
- Iowa has 5 or 6 AAs
- Okie St has 5 AAs
- tOSU & Cornell have 4 or 5 AAs
- the B1G has as many AAs as the next four conferences combined
- one out of every 6 AAs calls PA their home state
- despite the popularity of wrestling internationally, there will only be 1 wrestler that AAs who was not born in the US. And he won't be a champ.
