A very wise man said on more than one occasion

Honestly it isn’t that we are that bad. I believe we are a top 10 team. We couldn’t give out defense a breather. Our offense failed us. The D wore down. And we got tired.

credit to Michigan. They held our middle linebacker on every major run. Great job to them. We need depth to be able to stop that kind of running game. We don’t have it

Yes, go back and look at the comments after Michigan manhandled us in 2016….we weren’t going to win another game and we weren’t going to make a bowl.

I think Michigan outschemed us. They did a great job exposing our weaknesses.

Our run blocking showed nothing yesterday. Most of our runs were 2 yards or less.

Top 10? Put the pipe down please

In other words, "Its ok if we get embarrassed on the field, we can still jerk off to memories of Joe"

While that may work for you do not be surprised if others disagree.

Right? This obsession with Paterno is absurd. Paterno is gone. He was a great man that sold a fan base on success with honors so they would tolerate mediocre seasons to the point where now people don't comprehend what real expectations are...

Can we please stop living in the past?
We don't live in the past as the game has changed dramatically. I miss the days when PSU played physical football and teams knew they were in for a battle. When you have a D1 lb who throws a shoulder into a very good back without wrapping your arms around him, that's basic tackling fundamentals.

The team has taken on the personality of it's coach. We play soft and without a sense of urgency. I'm tired of watching a 1st round db get a stupid penalty on the opening play because of a lack of discipline, like yesterday. The social media crap and the cute cards on the sideline, a few years back reflect the lack of discipline and accountability. You can have love and family but still call out your players who lack discipline by sitting them and playing with someone who does. Just my 2 cents

And I'm fine with this comment without constantly talking about "what Paterno said"

Look at the big games games yesterday. Tennessee 52 Alabama 49, Utah 43 USC 42, TCU 43 Oklahoma State 40 and Michigan 41 Penn State 17. The game has changed drastically and while it does suck that's football in 2022.

Porter needed to be more disciplined and I'm anti-social media as well but these kids grew up with it and no matter who the coach it isn't going to change.

True- but that was when we had a "real coach" and not the 8th tier coach we have now. He is also so arrogant and NEVER EVER takes any responsibility- just his stupid one game motto. Time to coach Franklin- oh right- YOU CAN'T!!!

We don't have a D1 middle linebacker my friend. Maybe you watched a different game than the rest of us...thats probably our biggest problem defensively, even more than the problem up front with our midget defensive tackles that play on either sides of P.J., who plays in a phone booth.

Agreed. Week see what kind of nuts this team has down the stretch. We’ve got Minnesota who looks like they lost their QB. Then tOSU.

these things crush you or fuel you.
Minnesota don't need their qb to win.

See: "Illinois, 2021, Sitkowski, Art".

They absolutely were that bad.

We are nowhere near a top 10 team. I’m surprised anyone could possibly think that after watching the game Saturday, (or the earlier games for those paying attention).

I agree the offense was horrible but frankly so was the defense. You can’t give them a pass at all. It’s not like they were stout but ran out of gas late. They couldn’t make a stop from the opening kickoff. No Michigan punts. That’s not all on the O. That’s the D not being able to get a stop when needed.

Unfortunately "a stop" implies there was one! We were that bad. Maybe we could've shortened the quarters like 'Cuse vs. Wagner a few weeks ago or gone with the running clock like high school.

My son played Bert Bell flag football and we went into Upper Darby to play their team. We didn't keep score on a scoreboard (even though we did in our heads) and were always supposed to tell the kids the game "was close" and to "try their best on every play."

On that Saturday morning our team got blown out. When a player asked the score I parroted the line. Kid says "Coach we haven't scored and we haven't stopped them from scoring. How is it close?"

Yesterday felt like that.

is this team winning the big ten and going to the rose bowl?
Don’t know, I doubt it but I doubted it before the season started. Did you or anyone else think we were going to win the Big Ten and go to the Rose Bowl after we got pummeled by Michigan in 2016? That was the point of my post…you can’t use the results from one game to judge what’s going to happen in the rest of the games in the season.

That's all on the coaching staff. I believe we've got top-10 talent. We may have some weaknesses on the OL and DL, but not to the point that explains Saturday. I think Franklin is a good coach, but to be great Franklin needs to figure out why we can't win, or at least play well, coming off a bye week, and why we can't win, or at least be competitive, in Ann Arbor in a non-Covid year.

This doesn’t make sense. The grand experiment was about success with honor. That real student athletes would compete for championships regularly. How does 2 National Championships and 5 undefeated seasons translate into tolerating mediocrity??

or did I miss the sarcasm meter.

All of my friends from the Paterno era….before he was 75 years old….find this lack of winning big games intolerable. Paterno also lost to Iowa 6-4, and suffered a Nebraska waxing in the Kickoff Classic, but he had built tremendous equity on the backbone of wins in big games, wins after a week off and holy crap, winning bowl games against big teams. So. I don’t need to return to a Paterno era, but one cannot simply erase a record of success. That makes my expectations high.

Probably has something to do with the staff leaving for 5 days every time. Watch Matt McGloins podcast, that's exactly what he said.

What happened from 86 until he retired? 1994 was the only other elite year.
Did you expect to win at least 10 games this year? If not, your expectations are low.

As an example, the Steelers were horrid last week against the Bills but this week at home, despite adversity, played much better against Tampa Bay. The upcoming Minnesota game is critical for the season.
