All-Star Classic

I think it was posted at the beginning of the thread--started at 184. Nevills won 2-0 with a 2nd period escape and 3rd period ride-out with a tough ride.

Thanks. I'm an idiot. I was out this afternoon and went straight to page 2 when i opened this thread.

Hall looks to be on pace to grab title number 2 to me..

I happen to agree that Mark will garner title number 2 this season.

That said, I didn't see the match today. Given he and Valencia have now split one point matches and appear to be pretty dead even, was there something you saw today that led you to believe Mark is right on pace to repeat?

WE ARE!!!

Flip a coin. These two will dominate the field IMO.

Nothing today showed Mark has an edge. Same thing for Zahid. Two evenly matched studs

I think the talent of both of them will definitely lead to some separation between them and BoJo. I believe it's Hall & Valencia at 1 and 1A and then a significant gap to BoJo at 3.

No. I made similar comments last season when he took a couple losses early, I figured things ended well so why not. To be honest though, I’d never bet against Hall.

On the one hand, Mark has admitted that NCAAs was the first time he beat Zahid in hundreds of attempts.

On the other, Mark doesn't lose when the big lights are burning hot.

Gonna be f*n to watch!

what I saw was that 174 is up in the air, Valencia was the aggressor and Mark seemed content to try and capitalize off of that. It didn't work and would like to see Mark be more offensive , not sure you can count on being able to counter Valencia to win

Can anyone confirm is was in fact a scratch weigh-in?
Can't confirm, other than saying there is no reference (to weight) in the Rulebook. It's my understanding, which I am trying to confirm, that all wrestlers must be at scratch weight.

Valencia is an amazing talent, and there is no shame (and would not be schocking at all) if Hall falls to him at NCAA's.
I almost think that Valencia is staying at 174 just to prove that he can beat Hall at NCAAs.

Also, for anyone is interested, ASU is wrestling UM at Detroit Catholic Central (in Novi MI) Friday night. Free Admission!

If Valencia stays at 174 (which it appears he is), then he would wrestle Amine--another good challenge among fellow SO studs at that weight!

Last time he wrestled Amine he walked right through him for 3rd place. I don’t know if that bout will be all that competitive.

Valencia scored 5 points in that match. All he has to do is cut down on Zahid's scoring now!

I didn't see the match but it seems like these two studs are pretty much a 50-50 tossup right now.

Question for the board: The "lack of attacks" argument is just beyond ludicrous to me. OTOH, Mark can tend to be a bit passive at times in terms of firing off attacks and pushing the action. Is this because of his extreme confidence in his insane scrambling ability? Would he benefit at all from adopting just a touch more Nolf style to his game?

What do people think?

WE ARE!!!
I would agree with you except attacks allow you to set the pace, score in a pinch, seize and hold the initiative. With Mark's mad variety of areas that he is better than his opponents it not working for me to have him rely primarily on counterattacks against the better opponents. BoJo gave Mark the initiative in their final and Mark controlled the entire match. Zahid won't do that and every minute Mark doesn't score in him gives him more confidence. As far s the rest of the field goes these two guys are almost weirdly out in front. It's like there two college wrestlers competing in a high school season.

I know we want to discount Jordan, but he did beat Mark at B1G last year too. I tend to agree that Zahid and Mark are another level (for instance, I'm far more confident in those two medalling for the US in future World Freestyle competition), but for now, I'm going to continue to see 174 as a 3-horse race.

Lastly, I wanted to save Nevills' move I mentioned above for posterity, and thought I'd share.

Not sure I'm following. Zahid and Myles wrestled 3 times last year, all won by Zahid; 4-3 at Cliff Keen, then 2 lopsided bouts at NCAA's...14-8 and 15-5. I'd say Zahid has separated himself from Amine.

Related, I wouldn't sleep on Bo Jordan. May be unpopular here, I see close bouts between the top-3. And while it's a little early to be saying this, it's just as true now as it is late in the season... being a #1 seed at 174 will be a significant advantage. NOTE: saw nerf posted something similar above.

Valencia has the upper hand as he is the only one with a td awarded in each match (I know 1 was wiped away on review). Hall needs to figure out how to get a td or 2 if he wants to win their next match. Not that it can't or won't be done but he has yet to do it in their 2 college matches. As good as Hall is defensively, Valencia has been known to be as good or better at keeping guys from finishing since he was a high school freshman. Ask Myles Martin about how tough it is to finish on Valencia even if he lets you get a leg. My only knock on Valencia coming out of hs was his unwillingness to be offensive against other elites. He fixed that.

this is incorrect

mark hall took down Valencia last year at NCAA

i believe he had the only TD in that match

Then I stand corrected. I thought neither got got a td and Hall won by the TV point.

*edit*
I forgot about the YOLO trip attempt as time expired that was countered for the final points. My point remains. Hall needs to figure out how to get a TD or 2 (when Valencia isn't trying desperate attempts as time expires).

The best I could find... https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...26DB8DAC05FC6F1E8BEB26DB8DAC05FC6F1&FORM=VIRE.

Indeed, Mark did have a takedown, I was also reminded of the sportsmanship, and mutual admiration shown after their match.

I agree however, the same point applies to Valencia. I expect any rematch to be a very close bout.

Sorry, Roar--I was trying to be a bit facetious, but mistakenly wrote that Valencia scored 5 points in 3rd place match (when I meant to write Amine). If I'm going to make a weak attempt at humor, I need to at least get the names straight!!

I’ve got Valencia as my favorite to win as he looks to be the most offensive of the 3. The only thing I’d give Jordan is that he could be hard to takedown and this will be (barring injury) his first healthy season.

Valencia is unquestionably an offensive Juggernaut. So was our man DT, except when facing the blonde counter tool. So is almost all of Dean Heil's opponents.

Hall is a far more aggressive a freestyle wrestler; hope to see him bring some of that to his season. At least he tried the trip yesterday, that was encouraging to see.

I think Mark Hall is flat out the best wrestler of the 3. The problem is that he is a small 174 while Valencia and Jordan are enormous for the weight class (and talented). Pretty sure Mark kept his weight down for Jr. Worlds and only started looking to gain size a couple months ago. Hopefully he can continue to grow in the horsepower department between now and March.

MARK NEEDS TO HIT THE WEIGHTS HARD !!!!

Towards the season's end I have to give the edged to Mark. Hall has so much talent he faces in the room daily. I think Valencia may be hampered with his lack of talent in the ASU room.

He seems to have the length between (arms and height) him and Mark, but if they were to go through a lifting circuit, my money is on mark. The extra length means to me the shorter guy needs to be that much more explosive and quicker to his movements. See it in boxing a lot.

Don't know about that, yesterday was the first time seeing Hall in person and he seemed big to me. His legs are tree trunks, Zahid is very thin and looks like he has room to easily grow into 184

I agree 100%..Marks lower body much bigger than last year. Obviously Zahid is taller, but Mark defininetly thicker which I didn't see last year

Having Eric Thompson to wrestle with every day has to be beneficial to Nick. As good as it is to have Cael and Jake as workout partners, having Eric to grapple with allows Nick to become comfortable being athletic when rolling around with a large amount of mass.
