I could be on board with this concept for one game. How about going back to the original, and still official, Penn State Royal Blue? Paterno changed the football unis from royal to navy early in his career and eventually all sports followed.

The white shoes actually match the uniform. White with a blue swoosh look great. I understand that black shoes are a classic PSU thing, but black is not one of the two colors of PSU. Blue and white are, though.
I agree including the white shoes in this uniform is a head scratcher. The only time I can remember PSU wearing white shoes was the 1979 Sugar Bowl and was the first time we played for the de-facto, undisputed national championship - and we lost that game. Even the video clip and poster refer to that game - so why include the white shoes??? This is the kind of dumb thing I would expect from our esteemed administrative "leaders" and BOT - not CJF and his staff.UGH! We wore white shoes for the only time in the 79' Sugar Bowl. How did that work out?![]()
The official color of Penn State Athletics is Navy (Pantone 282), while the official color for the university at large is PSU Dark Blue (Pantone 287).How about going back to the original, and still official, Penn State Royal Blue? Best guess: someone was in favor of featuring white shoes and they backed into the "Hey 1979!" explanation.I agree including the white shoes in this uniform is a head scratcher. MMII. Just had a heart attack.I blame that loss on the gray facemasks rather than the white shoes. Just sayin'.![]()

It's indisputable that we wore white shoes in the 1979 Sugar Bowl, so why is including it in the throwbacks a head scratcher? Every indication in the videos and in the poster indicates that the throwback includes white shoes because that's what we wore in the 1979 Sugar Bowl. While it's true we lost that game (something I'm sure Penn State was aware of when designing the unis), we also lost big games with gray facemasks, blue pant stripes, and numbers on the helmet from time to time. I'm a bit confused why it's a "dumb thing" to include them, to be honest.I agree including the white shoes in this uniform is a head scratcher. Just got a phone call from the same buddy. Now he says he remembers putting on the blue and white stockings for the Cotton Bowl in Jan. '72. He said he hated them because they always slid down.I think I recall seeing Cappy wear striped socks in '73. Maybe not. Maybe before then.
I recall hearing that they went to the knee-high white socks in '74 at the request of Jimmy Cefalo.
Bring back pink and black!
And I blame that game on Barry Krause! The nerve of him fighting harder than our OL and figuring out our 3 trick plays. How did he guess we were going to run up the middle again and again?!I blame that loss on the gray facemasks rather than the white shoes. Just sayin'.![]()
I am not a fan of that at all. Just don't like it, also, did the Football team ever actually wear pink and black?
I know the baseball team did but isn't there a question as to whether the football team ever did?

Or the REAL original black and fuchsia...How about going back to the original, and still official, Penn State Royal Blue? Paterno changed the football unis from royal to navy early in his career and eventually all sports followed.
is that why Alabama struggles to get young recruits?
Gray facemasks are the only facemask I want with a white helmet.
amazing job by Franklin...easing all the tradionalists into the modern era. these are perfect.
Absolutely forget the freaking white shoes. That game still haunts. The white shoes were never a tradition. I'm good on the rest of this. I still recall thinking that Bruce Clark looked goofy in those white shoes.
Um...no.White cleats are better looking than black cleats in general.
Right!!! Because Joe just couldn't lose against the Bear, huh?The only thing "goofy" about that game was the play calling. PSU could have won with no shoes.
Love everything about it. Especially how the kids who are actually wearing them seem to love it as well, not fans with beer bellies watching on TV.

That's interesting to hear Justin King say that when he was a player, they used to fight the coaches to try and get stripes put back on the pants.
That's true, except for the pesky facts that it was 1989 and Bear Bryant died in 1983.No, Joe was an expert at losing to the "Bear". Watch the replay of the Sugar Bowl where PSU marched down the field mostly with outside running and then getting stuffed four times up the middle at the goal line. Or watch PSU march down the field for the win only to play for a field goal that was blocked for another loss. I believe the year was 1985.
Beat me to it...still one of the "best" losses I have seenThat's true, except for the pesky facts that it was 1989 and Bear Bryant died in 1983.
