Alternate Throwback Uniforms for Indiana Game

Or the REAL original black and fuchsia...

Not a fan of this look but have a feeling the players/recruits would absolutely love it. For one game a year it's perfectly fine to mix it up with an alternate uniform even if it ticks off half the fan base.

No, Joe was an expert at losing to the "Bear". Watch the replay of the Sugar Bowl where PSU marched down the field mostly with outside running and then getting stuffed four times up the middle at the goal line. Or watch PSU march down the field for the win only to play for a field goal that was blocked for another loss. I believe the year was 1985.
Bear Bryant was not even alive in '85, let alone coaching 'Bama.

Yeah but, just think how fast Barkley will be in white shoes instead of those slow black shoes.

White shoes makes us look like sissys.

Plus, I want Barkley, and everyone else on the team to look as slow as possible on tape. Lou Holtz said that we were one of the toughest teams to game plan for because those plain uniforms would always have opposing coaches going into the game underestimating our speed.

Good article on it from Scout.. Spider is a big fan, if that matters to anyone.. (it does to me).

Caldwell was a bit skeptical of the white shoes, but only because they harkened back to a single contest (the 1979 Sugar Bowl vs. Alabama) and Penn State lost that game.

“I’m a little superstitious,” he said with a laugh.

Otherwise?

“I thought it looked sharp,” he said. “Clean and classic.”

Spoken like a true throwback equipment manager.

Amen, Mr. Caldwell.

I'm confident that every coach on our schedule knows exactly how fast Barkley is. Besides, if coaches in 2017 are underestimating teams based on their uniforms looking plain, they probably won't be a coach for too much longer - there isn't a coach on the planet who underestimates Alabama, and their uniforms are just as plain as Penn State's.

Yeah. Not exactly shocking given all the film, media, hype etc. It's a nice story if it's true but not exactly applicable today.

I may not be noticing, but don't almost all schools wear black shoes now anyway? The white shoes fad was about a 10 year thing from some time in the 70s to some point in the 80s, iirc. Could be wrong. Maybe there's a school or a game where they wear an alternate color shoe, e.g. Oregon wearing green shoes, or some such thing. But it is not prevalent that I recall.
We may re-start a new old trend!

Believe that was '89. I know Blair Thomas could have and should have almost single handily won that game.

Just announced. Gray facemasks, blue stripe on pants, striped socks and white shoes.

White shoes don't belong with the Penn State uniform. Period! They looked shitty at the Sugar Bowl. Otherwise I like the idear of an occasional throwback but why not go all the way back to Pink and Black. I would like to see it broken out for Iowa. It would make a statement.

That's true, except for the pesky facts that it was 1989 and Bear Bryant died in 1983.
I was at that game and I don't recall it as a situation where we were playing for a FG. Blair Thomas broke off a run and looked like a TD but they ruled his knee was down just short of the goal line. Don't recall if we ran more plays after that or not but I certainly don't recall us taking a knee or anything like that. The FG was blocked by Jon Hand (could be wrong on the name), a very good and very tall DL who got a hand up and deflected the kick.

If you are trying to have a throwback uniform that mimics the pink and black uniforms, you won't be making much of a statement.

We were out of timeouts. If we run the play and the QB slips and falls or a Bama player breaks thru and makes the tackle the game is over. It was a chip shot FG. You can argue the call either way, but know it alls like Osprey would have been howling had they run a play and got stopped..."stupid Paterno should have kicked the easy FG."

I'm not a fan either, but if we're going to go retro all the way, these are the original Penn State athletics colors.
