Another old Cael Article

I've been meaning to share this. (i get errors when I try to add a photo so I created a little website workaround) It's an old Cael High School article of my hometown's newspaper roasting me after losing to Cael. I figured someone might as well get some joy out of it. I know at the time I was like wtf newspaper. It's what made me a fan of Cael and follow PSU today.
Excited to see Penn St. back in action!!!

But you didn't get pinned! Impressive! We are both in great company having lost to legendary wrestlers. When I was a junior in college (if my memory serves me correctly) I wrestled Dave Schultz at an open tournament right after he won his Olympic gold medal. It was a short bout : ) On a different note, the wrestlers of today are so blessed to be able to have all of their matches easily recorded. In my 11 years of wrestling I didn't end up with any video and just a few photos of any of my matches. The one benefit is there is no proof out there to counter my claim that in no way was my win-loss record indicative of my true wrestling prowess.

I was no Russ Bird that day Yes I didnt get pinned... that is also what my dad told me. Cael did pin the other 3 guys that tournament. I'm not sure what "move" he had me in but I wasnt sure about a lot during that match. The worst thing about the article (other than my paper calling me a dead man walking) is they completely left out that our 135lber who I'm pretty sure was #1 seed got pinned my Caels teammate. If that doesnt happen I only get destroyed, not lose the tourney for our team as well too! Everyone knew I would lose, it was up to him to win!

San Diego wrestling fans might have had a chance to see Cael in action live way back in 1995. Before all the feuding started between those two HS coaches, (you know who I'm talking about) the El Cajon Invitational was a top tier Christmas tournament. Some very good teams from all over the US would come to San Diego for the competition and probably for the warm weather too. In 1995, the tournament was at Grossmont College and I remember the finals as being some of the best HS wrestling I had ever seen up to that time. The final match of the evening was around 145, and a buzzsaw from a school in Utah totally destroyed his CA opponent in the finals. I remembered from the finals introduction that the guy from Utah was a one or two time state champion and that he had short trimmed blond hair, just like Sanderson. I've looked for all over the Internet for HS tournament results to see if it really was Cael but I can't find anything. The time frame and weight class were right, so there is a decent chance it was him.
