Any of our guys going to the Edinboro Open?

In terms of NCAA scoring

165 4-6
174 15-19
184 20-25
197 12-16
285 16-20
That’s 67-86 without 125-157. 133 will probably score more this year than next as Suriano, Micic, and Fix return from redshirt plus Desanto, Rivera, Philippi, and Alvarez all return. 141 is probably in the finals with Yianni. I don’t know who you will have at 149 but Berge at 157 will be competing against Hidlay, Deakin, Young, Carr, Monday, Humphrey’s, Hartman, and Lewan. Even with Eierman coming in, if your freshman/sophomore Brooks perform like you expect it could be a very tight team race.
125 - Howard if healthy could have a shot at the podium as Glory did last year. After Lee, Glory, Arujau, and Foley, the weight seems up for grabs. Way too early to tell on this one. But the weight could be had.

133 - agreed. Floor 6th/7th depending on exact bracket, not seeing a healthy RBY losing to Phillippi or Alvarez. Not ready to put him ahead of the 3 returnees either, so ceiling 4th today.

141/149 - wait-and-see -- could possibly go Bartlett 141, Lee 149. I don't think this will happen today, but November is a long way off. If no lineup change, finals at 141 about right, 2-2 at 149 might be optimistic (candidates would be Verk, Gardner, Pipher, Busiello).

157 - Berge with his health issues this year still beat Humphreys. Very good short offense but little bonus, mid AA type with the potential to go higher given his freestyle success.

I would include Schroder from Purdue and Latona from V Tech as possible AA types as well at 125. Latona has some decent wins and only lost to Picc 6-4 at the Scuffle. It will be interesting regarding Nick Lee staying at 141 or bumping to 149. Especially assuming Eierman goes 149 and Kolodzik comes back from redshirt. I appreciate your breakdown. I see too many statements on both boards of where guys will finish without much explanation or looking to see who is at that weight nationally.

Jefe,
Based on what I saw in person today, Busiello has to get by Barraclough before Verk, Gardner, Pipher. Terrell is getting his butt kicked daily by Lee, and is trying to emulate him. Nice model to follow. And I never saw him seem winded or tired after any matches. He was a highly ranked soccer player and has legs.

Thanks for the kind words, flattery will get you everywhere!

Agreed on those 125s being possible podium types. I suspect there are a few more too, but after the first 4 none strike me as can't miss podium next year. Wish McHenry were competing this year in opens so we could see if he is adding the needed weight.

You're right -- I brain farted on Bearclaw when I posted that, especially bad after following the Edinboro Open today where he outperformed Busiello.

One possibility: if Pipher wants a shot at starting 149 as a SR next year, one or more of those guys could be Berge's 157 backups.

Wait, does this mean he's not going to UPJ to re-join Strittmatter?

I agree this kid seems like he has the mentality and maturity thag Cael looks for. Not to say the others don't have it but bear claw looks good little work on bottom but he has a motor

Two people I don’t see in these discussions are possibly Mason Manville at 165 and Austin Boone at 149. 2 very good candidates for starting roles .

Haha! No problem. I’m a diehard Iowa fan and have made dumb comments in the heat of the moment that I regret. But I also try to be realistic about wrestlers performances. I think duals between top ranked rivals are exciting and it’s f*n when your team wins. But to say one match against one opponent can help shape the outcome at the NCAA tournament doesn’t make sense to me. There are way too many variables that go into it. The biggest surprise last night for me was Kemerer over Hall. Not just him winning but how he did it. Hall had not given up more than 8 points in a loss in his 114 collegiate matches before last night and he gave up 11. That was only his 6th loss in 115 matches. Then I see comments about an adrenaline dump and that’s why he lost. He’s a senior who has wrestled on the biggest stage in college multiple times and competed at high levels internationally. I don’t buy it. He just got beat. People are entitled to their opinions but I don’t see this as an anomaly. It will be a dogfight every time these 2 go at it.

Manville will be in the mix for 165. Maybe he wins the job. I don't see him adding anything at nationals over Lee -- maybe another consis win, maybe not, but either way less likely for bonus. Call it a wash.

Boone -- like his potential long-term. I'd be surprised if he starts next year. All of our true freshmen starters in the Cael Era have been exceptional prospects and/or emergencies. He's not the former (i.e., not Zain or Nico or Morgan, etc.), and hopefully the latter doesn't come into play. If he adds no points at nationals over the returnees, then shirt him and keep his best years available.

Completely forgot about Boone wtf we have some really good young wrestlers coming in font we. Great to be a PSU fan. We are blessed

IMO last night's 174 match isn't worth getting worked up over, aside from the initial shock. It doesn't change anything. They will meet again in the B10 finals. Winner gets the 1 seed at nationals and a fairly clear path to the finals. Loser is the 2 or 3 seed, clear to the semis, then has to beat Kutler. That was the likely path Thursday. Both guys are experienced enough that none of this will affect them.

I think Pipher needs to commit to 149 or 157. If 157, then he should work to add good muscle mass and strength as his frame appears to have plenty of room for growth.

I thought Kemmerer wrestled great. I did comment about Hall looking gassed and a potential explanation. Sometimes frustrations can create that appearance.
Hall will have to score off ties or maybe ankle pick. I don't think he scores on single leg with Kemmerer length.
It should be interesting.

174 really clears out next year. There are a ton of seniors graduating. Unless Kemerer gets an extra year, the top returning guys are Labriola and Romero. Both very solid but not all-time greats. Starocci could be in the top 3 in no time.

Kem is almost certainly getting another year. Amine will be back, but probably up at 184.

Really looking forward to this Static I guy. Who does he wrestle for? ;)
