Anyone else not really a huge fan of the oval Nittany Lion logo?

im not losing sleep over it and it doesn’t prevent me from buying merchandise that includes the logo, but I really think it is cheesy. I’m not a fan of the previous front facing lion head logo either. I think the logo used on university stationary is distinguished and the cartoon like Nittany Lion mascot logo is fun. I’ll try to post photos of these two, but I typically struggle with this.

Are there any other old school or alternate Penn State logos that you all appreciate, or are you all in on the oval chipmunk logo?

Here is the stationary logo that I like

You mean the Nittany Chipmunk? The logo since... the ‘80s?

It's distinctive and anyone who follows college athletics knows it's Penn State. Consider all the other schools with feline mascots and how each has their own variation of a menacing cat. One isn't much different from the other. The Pozniak Lion (below) was used in the 80s and is still is sometimes but the oval lion is what people now recognize.

The "chipmunk" logo is my favorite logo. It's neat, clean, instantly recognizable, goes with or on anything and anywhere, and includes the school colors. IMO it's a magnificent piece of design. And I think the school made a huge mistake in dropping the typeface that went along with the logo. It was also very distinct, unique, neat, and clean.

I remember the Pozniak lion from my time as an undergrad. I remember for the longest time seeing the thing and wondering what it was! It's a nice logo too but I think the "chipmunk" logo is a huge improvement.

Not trying to be a smartass here, but I've tried to view this thread on both firefox and chrome on both desktop and mobile and I can't see any of the images you tried to share Ranger Dan.

I'm with 84 Lion here that the chipmunk logo is the best we've had and remains the instantly recognizable logo for Penn State.

Never liked the chipmunk logo. I agree it’s instantly recognizable. Which is one reason it was chosen. And we’re stuck with it.

How would this look on a helmet?? This is the new logo thats been around a few years but I dont know if its used for the athletic teams. The chipmunk logo is fine but would not look right on helmets from what I've seen photoshopped in the past.

Penn State doesnt own this logo so stopped using it officially.

They released a terrible new logo in the late 90s... like 96ish which went away quickly.

Chipmunk is the best.

My understanding is that the merger of Penn State Hershey w/Pinnacle Health to create Penn state Health (blocked due to competition issues) was a driving force for the new one for PSu academic side, along with some concerns about graphics on computers.

I’m NOT up in this enough to understand it, but I prefer the previous NL shrine on shield way over this long necked lion!

Agree the chipmunk logo is very recognizable but I like the newest one better even if its not being used for the athletic teams.

the chipmunk logo just instantly says Penn State....I love the Pozniak lion, its cool as hell.....the front facing one is blah and the digital one is horrible

Love the chipmunk logo. Clean, easy, and over the years has become instantly recognizable to Penn State. It's also good regardless of size. Many logos do not look good when you go smaller because they are too "complicated" and things get lost or missed when downsized. For example, look at the chipmunk logo at the "V" in the collar of the team jersey. Even though it's very small --- fitting in the "V" of a collar --- it's still very recognizable because it's so simple. But now imagine trying to put the "Zombie Lion" in the "V" of the football jerseys. It could not be done, because the "zombie lion" is too complicated and it would not come across so small.

I consider myself reasonably smart, but I can consistently post a picture to save my life. Maybe it has to do with the source...

I love this logo, but I don’t think it’s suitable for a helmet.

The chipmunk logo revolutionized logo usage in college sports. One if the first, if not first, to identify a school solely by an image w/no lettering/text

Even today there are very few such images which are immediately associated with a school. Considering Big Ten schools, Iowa's logo has become very recognizable. Maybe Michigan State but that are other similar warrior-in-armor profiles used elsewhere. At Illinois, the Chief Illiniwek logo was well known and recognizable until the NCAA killed it.

One of my all time favorites is the ASU Sun Devil with pitch fork logo which has the face of Walt Disney. I loved their old uniforms with the shades of desert brown and the devil on the helmet. Now they've become Oregonized and the devil logo isn't used as much.

You may have seen the examples of NFL team logos redesigned as European futbol badges. Here are some examples below:

I'm not much of a soccer fan, except for men's and woman's USA world cup teams or when in europe. I do think that these logos are pretty cool... not that the NFL teams would change their logo, but it would be cool to have some "alternate" gear for your team to mix it up a little. Google "NFL logos redesigned as European futbol badges" and you will see many examples for each of the NFL teams. I'm not sure who started this, or whether the NFL authorized it.

Anyway, I got to thinking that it would be pretty cool to do this same thing for college football teams, or at least Penn State. Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting that we put this on our helmets or on the fifty yard line, just an authorized alternate logo for t-shirts and other gear. Would you buy or wear gear with a redesigned logo in the mold of European futbol? Anyone care to take a stab at mocking up a design of their own?

THIS!! The chipmunk is not only the best PSU logo, I think it's one of the best in college football. Simple, recognizable, universal, classic. Even casual CFB fans know it. 2nd the statement "magnificent piece of design."

Always thought the oval logo was the best one, except that maybe just a blue “S” or PSU block letters would be better.

In the late 1990s/early 2000s there was this other logo that was horrendous. So I don’t trust the school to adopt a new logo. They would ruin it

Here in Oregon I’ve met people who were wearing PSU chipmunk logo and learned they weren’t affiliated with Penn State - just loved the logo!
It’s is all about brand awareness and the sleek logo instantly identifies us.

In Virginia I have seen numerous high schools that adapted the oval logo to their own mascot and use it. I think people like it in general
