Anyone else not really a huge fan of the oval Nittany Lion logo?

I don't know a comparison number, but $3.8 million seems kind of low for annual trademark revenue. You can swing a dead cat and hit three people wearing PSU clothing.
I think that’s a pretty big number. It’s basically adding a revenue stream on the order of a second men’s basketball program.

The PSU athletic logo is recognizable without wording, but it looks like a chipmunk. PSU’s mascot is the Nittany Lion. Could a logo that is identifiable, can be copy righted, and looks like a Nittany Lion be developed?

i really love what is commonly referred to as the chipmunk logo and i don't want any of you birds trying to change it.

what i don't like is why my computer will sometimes not allow me to capitalize letters by using my shift key.

The circular design of the logo which I personally really like just does not support any lettering with it due to the block nature of the lettering.
It would work as a stand alone logo on the side of a helmet with PSU on the other side.

The circular logo on the hockey jerseys looks good. But if you were to add lettering it should in my opinion be the side facing head with lettering in blocks below.

As for letterhead i like the classic monument with date.

The lettering as in the Wisconsin, Michigan, Purdue, etc. logos are bland and unimaginative. I’m a fan of the Chipmunk as many others here. It’s unique, recognizable, and successfully represents the head of the lion shrine on campus which is one of the most photographed places in Pennsylvania.

In Virginia I have seen numerous high schools that adapted the oval logo to their own mascot and use it. I think people like it in general
The oddest part of that logic is how the chipmunk logo is pretty clearly and obviously the Nittany Lion Shrine, something that’s obviously unique to Penn State. It barely looks like a conventional mountain lion.

im not losing sleep over it and it doesn’t prevent me from buying merchandise that includes the logo, but I really think it is cheesy. I’m not a fan of the previous front facing lion head logo either. I think the logo used on university stationary is distinguished and the cartoon like Nittany Lion mascot logo is fun. I’ll try to post photos of these two, but I typically struggle with this.

Are there any other old school or alternate Penn State logos that you all appreciate, or are you all in on the oval chipmunk logo?
I won't loose sleep either I like the logo it works and all of my clothing ,hats et el also have the logo on it

It is Penn State Btw the old lion shrine logo as well as the pre oval aka athletic logo as well as the old business logo were good as well

The “chipmunk” logo is classic and distinct. Two things you want in a logo and brand. No other Penn State logo comes close.

if you are getting lower-case letters with shift, usually that means caps lock is on. just saying.
Thank you; I will investigate. Right now I have to hit 'caps lock' key, hit the letter I wish to capitalize, and then take off the 'caps lock'; not a lot of fun.

That's interesting because about 20 years ago PSU stopped a local high school here in the Atlanta area from using the logo. About Late 90's / early 2000's Chattahoochie HS in Alpharetta, GA began using the "chipmunk" logo. Penn St found out about it and put a "stop order" on them becvause of branding rights. Initially Chattahhochie's response was to simply use a reverse image / mirror image of the logo. So instead of it pointing to the right, it was pointing to the left. Penn St found out about it again and had them stop a second time. Chattahoochie High finally gave up and designed their own logo.

BTW. The one CHS designed is pretty nice. They are not "lions" they are "cougers". But in terms of logos using a big cat ... lions, tigers, panthers, jaguars, cougers.... I'd say the one used by Chattahoochie High is better than the likes of Carolina Panthers or pitt.

I like the oval/chipmunk logo; it's uniquely Penn State. I will say I also admire that historically, all Penn State logos (even when we used an African lion) have been very dignified and stoic - unlike most other schools whose 'cat' logos are often feral and attacking.

Lol. This would be like Miami getting rid of the “U” and throwing away 40 years of brand recognition and marketing....billions of $.

Am I the only one who's never heard of it called the "chipmunk" logo?

I thought we were talking about Nittany Lions

I love the chipmunk logo, but never in my life have I ever looked at it (and I see it every day) and thought it looks like a chipmunk.

I agree. I too never saw a "chipmunk". Others call it the "chipmunk logo", so I just go with the flow and do not argue. But I'm 53. Have seen this logo since day #1 of it being used, and have never seen a chipmunk. I see a lion.

Here is the stationary logo that I like

You mean this? I prefer the chipmunk...you'll pry it out of my cold dead hands before you go to something like this...

I'm not saying that we use this as a sports logo, I'm just saying that I think it's more visually appealing that the oval logo.

Penn State doesnt own this logo so stopped using it officially.

They released a terrible new logo in the late 90s... like 96ish which went away quickly.

Chipmunk is the best.

LdN
It's a refurbished emblem of Eastern Michigan...I posted the Eastern Michigan's emblem in the threads many times in the past four months for fun....followed by "Go Penn State", "For the Glory", etc. Not one begged to differe that I didn't post our emblem.

I would also like to see “We Are” turned into some sort of Penn State logo. Preferably unadorned with no Penn State following it. I’m fine with being a critic, but I neither have the artistic skills or photoshops expertise to create one, Would any of the talented graphic designers who frequent this board like to take a shot? Thanks.

Agree...am I the only one that sees JoePa as well?

On an unrelated note, has anyone noticed the alternate logo Houston released a few years ago? Wonder where they got the idea.

Thundercats logo from the 80's. Does anyone know what year the chipmunk logo came into existence? I like the zombie lion, The chipmunk logo looks great on top of Beaver Stadium otherwise I think its starting to look dated a bit.

I am not a huge fan of the chipmunk. The reason why it is known as the chipmunk is that it looks less fierce than a mountain lion and looks more like a small rodent.

Having said that, I like how it "builds" in commercials. I can't find a gif of it but it is kind of cool.

I like this PSU Lion the best of what I've seen:

I agree. its grown on me. It would be interesting to see it enlarged and lit up like the chipmunk logo at beaver stadium. Kind of an ultimate test to compare the two

That design is way too busy for a helmet. And too much text for anything else.

The oval logo is great. IMO, if PSU wasn't so dead set on only using the 1950's look, the oval would make a fine alt helmet.

I've seen the oval chipmunk on a helmet before . It looks high schoolish to me. So im glad they dont use it.

Ugh no.... that was a horrendous design. Way too busy, WTF with 2 different fonts in one logo?
If you need to include text to explain what it is, it is a poor logo.

Hey @Kiber, I see you stopped posting in the Den, did you give up your membership? Just curious because I always enjoyed reading your posts?

I own a company that does primarily “retail” sales in Maryland so I have a store front and deal with the public everyday. When I do I wear plenty of Penn State apparel. I’m just amazed how many of my customers know the Penn St “chipmunk” logo without even seeing the Penn St name displayed under it. The chipmunk logo is instantly recognizeable and I’m not discussing sports fans here.

I’m just amazed at how many know the logo, that is the definition of “iconic”. Very few schools can say the same.
