Anyone else not really a huge fan of the oval Nittany Lion logo?

I own a company that does primarily “retail” sales in Maryland so I have a store front and deal with the public everyday. When I do I wear plenty of Penn State apparel. I’m just amazed how many of my customers know the Penn St “chipmunk” logo without even seeing the Penn St name displayed under it. The chipmunk logo is instantly recognizeable and I’m not discussing sports fans here.

I’m just amazed at how many know the logo, that is the definition of “iconic”. Very few schools can say the same.

Brand recognition. Think about Nike's swoosh.
I agree that the PSU oval logo has an instant recognition.
Smart advertising would have one logo and build on it, but I also see room for the side facing head with bold lettering and the Lion Shine playing roles in national recognition.

What other schools have a logo that’s instantly recognizable? Off the top of my head I would say the Notre Dame leprechaun, Univ of Miami’s “The U”, Texas Longhorns logo on their helmut just to name a few.

Also like Colorado’s and like others have mentioned Iowas’s and Michigan State’s are pretty cool, too.

Hey @Kiber, I see you stopped posting in the Den, did you give up your membership? Just curious because I always enjoyed reading your posts?

Thank you very much. And I too always enjoyed your posts & insight.

Reason I abandoned the Den was that I just got sick & tired of a few people hi-jacking every thread with their posts. There were a couple posters over there -- (who in my opinion knew nothing) -- but would have to chime in on every single thread. To be honest, I just grew sick & tired of them and decided to leave. I switched over to TOS for my pay subscription, and then jump over here to BW Illustrated's free board. Sadly, I believe this site has better content and overall posters, I just can not stand to put up with a few of the people on the Den.

It depends on whether you lump letter-based logos into the same category. If so, I’d definitely put schools like UNC into that mix.

I think Florida’s oval gator head and Georgia’s G are pretty iconic, too - though Georgia runs into issues with being confused for the Packers.

You hit some good ones. I would only list logos that are 100% unique to a school. For example, I would not list the Georgia "G" because a very similar "G" is used by the Packers, Grambling and probably a few others schools.

So thinking of 100% unique logos, I'd say the "U" for Miami. The Longhorn for Texas. The hawkeye logo for Iowa.

They need to bring back the chipmunk logo and the cursive Penn State in the End Zone's again.

If we are lumping in letters than I'd definitely add these:

> The big block orange "T" for Tennessee
> The interlocked OU for Oklahoma
> The childishly simple "N" for Nebraska

My vote would be to save the chipmunk logo for midfield. If it were me, I'd leave the end-zones with the big block "PENN STATE" and use the chipmunk for the midfield logo.

When I think about it, there’s more than just a few that have to chime in on every thread over there. I find myself lately not posting there. Don’t get me wrong, I always read the board just don’t post as much. Perhaps when the season starts I’ll be more motivated but lately the Den has been less than inspiring. Really not interested in TOS mainly because people know who I am in the Den and its nice that I have a good reputation.

What about the Diamond Pattern? LOL.

Yeah, @BBrown, I forgot how good the endzones looked back then. What period of time are we talking about? The endzone now is pretty boring.

I don't know why they abandon that font. It was unique and not boring as you mention the new one is.

I think they got rid of this around the same time they got rid of the opposite colored bands on the jerseys. Both bad moves.

Ugh, I’ll have to agree to disagree on the tennis ball font. Might be an unpopular opinion, but I’ve always hated it; seemed like a clever enough idea for a one-off that evolved into an actual part of Penn State’s branding. It always felt like a cheap knock off.

That said, the team was very good when it came into prominence, so I get why some fans appreciate it.

Wish I could help but my memory is getting muddled.
I think the "italic" font with the oval might be from the 90's.
I'm pretty sure the diamonds are from the 80's.

Our Endzone for the B1G championship game was pretty nice all the way around.
Now, I may be completely wrong on this but I thought Joe wasn't a fan of all the "paint" in the EZ because it was "slippery".

Missouri football has a tiger in an oval design, I also believe BYU has a cougar in an oval which at one time was on their helmet.
To answer your question, other than those mentioned already ... Clemson's Paw, Oregon's O, Arizona's SunDevil, there are a few others.

Anyone know if PSU uses an outside design and marketing firm for these things?
I have always wanted to know what the exact pantone blue is PSU Blue.

282 C is the Pantone for PSU Athletics blue.

The italic font was in use by 84' I have seen videos of the 83' Alabama game where it was over a blue painted endzone, instead of just on unpainted grass. But the "Oval logo, italic/scriptish letters with unpainted background" was in use from 1984 thru 2004.

Yeah, I forgot about BYU, love that oval with the letter Y in it.

Might be a good place to stick this (FC) - Pitt unveiled their new athletic branding/logo a few days ago, moving more towards their classic color scheme and a new logo. Thoughts?

I think it’s good that they are reverting back to old colors and script Pitt beyond just an alternate throwback. Like the helmet sticker as well.

Compare Pitt's logo (or anyone else's with a feline mascot) with the Penn State oval lion. Nobody will look at Pitt's logo and say, "Oh, that's Pitt". One look at our oval and college sports fans know who it is.
