B1G adding Friday night primetime games in 2017

As someone who drives 3 hours to games, I absolutely hate this.
Friday night games in State College would be an unmitigated disaster

If we do indeed see this come to fruition.......

What an emphatic statement that would be - that the folks lapping up the $$$$$ couldn't care less about the "student-athletes", or the fans, that they like to tout up in their PR spots.

And when you watch the prime time college games on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, the stands are nowhere near full. Great atmosphere.

I cringed when I saw that too.

NFL Thursday Night games so hello... Let the MAC and American have Fridays... (Although I could see Non-Conference Rutgers vs Directional Michigan work on a Friday)

With all the money we're expected to get from FOX and ABC, I'll be surprised if the B1G doesn't start doing Thursday games in some of our markets. And kiss having all Saturday prime time games schedules in April and May.

Yep saw that. So home games at PSU, OSU and UM are already out. Whats the point to play Friday nights in Piscataway and at Purdue?

Because nobody goes to those games anyway, but they can get a pretty decent tv audience with very little competition. People will watch on tv. The amount of people going to those games doesn't matter.

Couple thoughts:

1 - Big NO to a Friday home game. I'm not averse to PSU playing an away game on a Friday night, provided it's the Friday following the bye week or the first week of the season with - obviously - a non-conference home/home opponent like Temple.

2 - If they let Michigan get away with "opting out" but force everyone else (except OSU, of course) to participate, there will be a major backlash. Which will certainly fall on deaf B1G ears, because they're all about the big 3: OSU, UM, and $$$.

I wouldn't be surprised if hosting non-Saturday games was a condition of membership for Rutgers and Maryland.

I don't know the layout of other B1G campuses but a Friday game at PSU would be a a nightmare. All the paved lots are used during the day by faculty, staff or commuting students who I assume need permits. Either those lots would have to be closed to the daily users which would create a whole separate headache or the game attendees would have to be told they can't enter the parking lots until 5:00PM or so. Choosing either option would create a traffic/parking nightmare and piss off a lot of people.

Friday night prime time would be fine on Labor Day weekend. Aside from that, the idea sucks.

Friday night is for high school football and the American Conference.

My hunch is they are planning for michie/osu/psu (possibly) to say no as they are saying no team will play more than 2 friday night games. Wouldn't surprise me to see Rutgers/MD/NW/IU schedule multiple times on Friday nights especially if OSU/PSU say no thanks

So, Delaney said that schools with giant seating capacities may not be hosting games on Friday night. But, that does not mean they won't be playing Friday nights when they play at IU, Purdue or Northwestern.
I think you nailed that. If Delany wants Friday games in order to increase exposure for the conference, at least one of the teams will need to be a viewership magnet. Otherwise nobody will watch.

"Delany did tell Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune that Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan might avoid hosting Friday night games because of their large stadium capacities."

Because you know the ratings will just be through the roof for that late October Friday night Rutgers vs. Northwestern clash.

Friday of Labor Day weekend and Friday of Thanksgiving weekend could be used as National huge ratings games for $$$ reasons for the greedy BIG.

Imagine a Labor Day Friday night non-conference game of Texas at Nebraska or a Thanksgivng weekend Friday night game of Penn State at Michigan State or Michigan State at Penn State.

Big problem with the Friday after Thanksgiving is that many students will be at home.

...and cows in the field parking....;)

Seriously, though, the situation would be similar in Columbus. Though we did ok when the Crew played at Ohio Stadium (and there were some Wednesday games).

Iowa and Nebraska play Black Friday, and the stories state that Friday Night games will only be September & October.
