BAT Signal is up!

Interesting that the QB from Ohio that OSU has committed for 2017 is a 3 star.
No, I'm not saying star rating is everything. Just more fodder for the board :)

On 247 he is the top rated oh-hi-ya QB (Clark), ahead of Clifford

Great! But this makes me a little nervous. Did this kid get a tOSU offer? That school is a tOSU pipeline...or it has been in the past.

Fwiw - Clifford is the #8 ranked Pro-style QB.

tOSU already has a commitment from the #14 QB, from Akron.

Don't know their depth at QB, but perhaps they think they got their guy and they are done at QB?

#8 Sean Clifford QB
Cincinnati, OH St. Xavier
4 stars
6'2"
197
Penn St.

#14 Danny Clark QB
Akron, OHHoban
3 stars
6'2"
225
Ohio St.

247 ranks them different:
Clark being the #14 PRO style QB, # 12 player in oh-high-ya, and
Clifford being the #16 PRO style QB, #14 player in oh-high-ya, with both being lower 4 star rated kids. Scout has them as the #22 & #23 QB's for 2017.

But who cares what ratings split hairs. Clifford is obviously a very talented young man who CJF loves and a great addition to PSU !!! And CJF was up front in telling him that he wants 2 QB's in the 2017 class so we can look forward to another top QB joining him.

Kind of interesting that Rivals does not think that highly of Clark. Then again, it's only the ratings. I'm sure OSU and PSU know who they make offers to. As an aside, I thought Urban is not a Pro style QB guy?

This staff is professional. No doubt about it. At this point, a couple of LOI day, shock and awe commits wouldn't surprise me. Just going to sit back and enjoy. We Are......in good hands.

Sean said the coaches told him they plan to take 2 QBs in the 2017 class, and he's fine with that.

Ok, but is HJ? I didn't understand the urgency to take cliffords commitment so early on in the process when the 2016 cycle has such a long way to go. Why not wait for HJ and see how it goes. HJ was coming to the bash but now seems unlikely. If you read the articles that have been posted since, seems like we are out of it for HJ, which is a disappointment since HJ is the number 1 Qb in the next cycle and it isn't even close. Yes, Clifford is a really good QB but HJ is number 1 and there is no debating that. 2 qb's in one cycle rarely work out. And the bash is less than a week away. I would have waited to get a feel for HJ and would have told Clifford to wait up till at least a couple of weeks after the bash.

This is one of the stupidest posts I have read. You speak like you have personally rated all the QB's in the 2017 class. CJF offered Clifford a scholarship because CJF believes Clifford is a great QB talent, capable in CJF's eyes to lead the PSU offense in the years to come. It us as simple as that.

Should CJF wait for another QB to decide because you read something on a web site? For a player that could be the next Hack or the next D. Kendra?

I mean if this scares him off then what would happen if Wimbush RS at ND(likely) and comes out in 2016 and lights it up as a RS FR. Or what if Zembiec comes on campus and beats out McSorely and Stevens. I can understand a 16 y/os natural reaction not being favorable to this, but he'll either buck up and compete or his life and the rest of his playing career aren't going to go the way he hopes. Maybe it'll be here maybe it won't.

OK, I admit that I am a real novice when it comes to recruiting. I pretty much never watch recruiting videos. But I just watched Clifford's video that was in the Pennlive article. That was from his sophomore year? And it was against pretty good competition? If so, that was really impressive. And he has two more years in high school to develop. I think we got a really good one.

There is some film out there somewhere of a middle school game. I don't recall ever seeing middle school film on a newly announced recruit before this.

Things are changing for us....in a good way.

If Hunter doesn't want to come to a barbecue because some other QB wants to come to Penn State, so be it. Makes no sense to me. If at this point you are top ranked, why not just come marching in, like a winner? Seriously doubt these stupid internet ramblings. A young man who worked to achieve so much so soon, surely didn't do it by being a wimp. Enjoy the bash, Hunter.

I agree with your post. May be I was a little too critical but the reason I believe we are out of it for HJ is not because he is afraid of competition, but because we are taking 2 QB's in 1 cycle as opposed to ND taking 1 QB in 2 cycles. Even if Wimbush becomes a star, there is still no one in between him and HJ, where as in our case.... U know what I mean. Look, im not getting paid 4 mil a year to recruit, JF is. They ovb'ly know what they are doing and at no point did I knock on Clifford's ability. I just thought HJ was a little better and maybe they could have waited just a little while longer. But anyways, what do I know. Had another question for you. I am guessing we are only going to take 1 RB in this cycle, correct? Suppose there is a Rb who may not be as highly ranked as the other RB's that we are going after.. a name that we don't know about yet, but comes to camp gets an offer and wants to commit the same day (assuming its very early in the process just like the QB situation that just happened). Will you accept it and leave Swift & McFarland out of this class?

Your hypothetical situation isn't equivalent, for a lot of reasons, but thanks for trying to get me in a Catch 22.
I suppose you are saying we'd only take one RB because we have a back log at the position but even if we took someone else there is no way we would turn down or stop recruiting Swift (kinda like when we got Barkley and still went after and landed Robinson after taking 3 the cycle before). No one is saying we shouldn't try and get Johnson too, it is him that seems like he wants to go to a clearer depth chart. But if we take another RB and Swift doesn't want to come then I guess the staff will know what they are doing there too. Plus RB is totally different than QB. You sub them on every play, generally that isn't a good way to work your QBs. But to answer your question, no, I would want them to continue recruiting Swift and I think they would because it's a totally different situation.
Further I would have Swift up near commit watch, even if he's not actually going to commit anytime soon, because I have seen people who are familiar with St. Joes say we are well in the lead even though he wants to play out the recruiting process. I don't think we have a shot at McFarland.

There is also the impact of the overall class size. If the class is only 12-15 total, and given that CJF is on record as wanting 2 QB's in the class, more than 1 RB would be a luxury.

It sounds like the sky is the limit for Sean Clifford. He comes from an absolute powerhouse program in Ohio (St. Xavier) and his coach Steve Specht thinks Sean will go down as the best player he's ever had. Also, notice how the kid talks. He's got that classic Penn State student-athlete quality woven into his DNA.

“I think Sean, God willing, when it’s all said and done. if he stays healthy, he’ll be the best I’ve ever had,” Specht said.

“The first thing I was looking for when I was going to select a school was academics and networking, and at Penn State the alumni association there was unbelievable,” Clifford said. “The tradition and fan base, as I’ve been feeling it already, Penn State fans are the best in the nation. That really helped me make my decision. The coaching staff, I think is the best coaching staff I’ve ever met and I definitely want to play there.”

Clifford gave the good news to head coach James Franklin and future position coach Ricky Rahne.

“It was the best feeling in the world to see the whole recruiting process come down to one call was awesome and a lot of fun,” Clifford said. “They were really excited for me to join the family and start this new recruiting process and get as many targets as possible. That’s my goal as the first one in the class and my goal is just starting.” link1

“They were on Sean from day one,” Specht said. “Sean took a couple visits out there, went to camp and he fell in love with it and what a great place. A good staff. It’s Penn State, the Big Ten. Sean asked me what do you think, I said are you going to do better. It’s a great academic institution. They play great football, Big Ten, I said Sean what are you looking for Penn State doesn’t offer. Ultimately his answer was nothing. I was like let’s get it over with pull the trigger and go.”

Specht has already seen a lot of development in Clifford from last season to this summer.

“It’s night and day,” Specht started. “You’re talking about a young man that’s grown three inches since the beginning of the year. He’s every bit of 6-4. His arm strength is improving. He’s always had a good release. The knock on Sean has been he’s too competitive. He needs to learn he’s not going to run over a GCL linebacker, he needs to get his butt out of bounds.

“I don’t know if I’ve coached a kid like Sean, as competitive as he is, his mentality, he has the mentality of a linebacker playing quarterback, but he has all the skills. Has tremendous, tremendous leadership ability and tremendous instincts. He can do it all, throw on the run, throw in the pocket, I wouldn’t qualify him as a dual-threat guy, he’s a pocket passer, but he’ll surprise you with his athleticism.” link2
