BAT SIGNAL UP ... 4/22/19 (Nicolas Dawkins)

This is a perfect example of how the transfer portal is affecting recruiting based on the attrition of existing players. Franklin is going to fill this class to 25 or more ( I know I know ) as quickly as he can. In the previous two years Dawkins would have been held at arms length until later in the cycle. That said I wish him great success in blue and white.

The Nittany Lions continue to stockpile talent along the offensive line. Parkland High School guard and three-star prospect Nicholas Dawkins has committed to Penn State while on campus for an unofficial visit.

Dawkins first popped up on on the PSU radar back in October of 2018 when he visited for the victory over Iowa. However, it was not until just about one month ago that he was offered a scholarship during an unofficial visit to Happy Valley to take in a spring practice.

THE DAWKINS FILE
  • CLASS: 2020
  • SIZE: 6'4/300 LBS.
  • POS: OG
  • SCHOOL: Parkland (Allentown, PA)
  • 247SPORTS RATING: ★★★
  • 247SPORTS RANK: No. 733 overall, No. 40 OG
The Lions' top competition for the big guard came from Big Ten West foe Northwestern. The Wildcats extended an offer just 10 days ago during an unofficial visit to Evanston. Dawkins also claimed offers from Rutgers, West Virginia, Tennessee, Louisville, and Indiana.

Space is getting tight along the offensive line for Penn State, especially in the interior. Dawkins is the fourth offensive line commit in the class, and third that is slated to play inside, joining R.J. Adams and Golden Israel-Achumba. Grant Toutant expected to play tackle.

Dawkins also brings a bit of family notoriety with him to Happy Valley. He is the son of the late NBA Star, Darryl "Chocolate Thunder" Dawkins.

Penn State's class now sits at nine members, and No. 8 nationally according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Why would he have been held at arm’s length? Is that a judgment of his skill level?

Folks here would know better than me, but I think the answer is 'yes' unless he's one of these guys who will get a 'bump' later in the recruiting cycle. Given recent recruiting history, how many 3* OL (or players in general) have we taken in April?

Have to like this kid's bloodline though.

Yeah, I did note the 3-star rating. He also does not have the most impressive offer list. I’m not trying to rip the kid, but the star rating and offer list are what they are.

The other thing is you just never know with OL prospects. They're super hard to evaluate/project (unless you have an Orlando Pace or Jonathan Ogden type prospect). He has good size - guess we'll see.

Yep, under the recruiting rule before the early signing period CJF would have gone out and flipped a couple 3 star olinemen to get the 6 he wants this year if he lost out on the high flyers. But he learned a hard lesson last year when he lost out on olinemen and then lost the 2 early to the NFL that together left the roster short of olinemen. He's not taking that chance and possibly making the same mistake this year.....

It’s not a judgment of his skill level in a vacuum but where he stands in relation with other OL prospects. There are a few other prospects that I would imagine are more highly coveted by Franklin. With only 20 or 21 scholarships to award, he would do everything he could to corral those prospects first. Then if he had space he would fill out the spots remaining in the class. Now with the transfer portal he can easily take a full 25 man class. This mathematically opens up more slots at an earlier point in time thus allowing Franklin more flexibility. It was not a criticism of the young mans ability, just an observation of where he would have stood in the pecking order pre transfer portal.

More than half of our current class. And all 4 of our current OL recruits.

Yep, this year's class will show us how well Limegrover evaluates talent (although we will have to wait a few years to make a judgement).

It wasn't too hard to see that Walker was an elite OL prospect.

That's this year, right? How does that (star rating) compare to previous classes in the same time frame (verbals by/in April)?
